MIB 3 (3.5/5) Much better than the second. If the villain was better, I might even say it was better than the first. But he's not so it isn't.
Troll Hunter (3/5) Great premise and good acting. Doesn't really go anywhere and the ending (spoilers) of "The teens mysteriously vanished" was something I knew was going to happen from the beginning. Don't really get why they were afraid of the guys at the end, but I guess they were right to be?

Books

  1. Inverting the Pyramid: The history of football tactics - Jonathan Wilson (A)
  2. A Memory of Light - Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson (B)

Django was pretty good, especially considering that I don't really like any of Tarantino's post-Jackie Brown work.

Lincoln was a masterpiece. Even though I have no interest in American history, I found it thoroughly enthralling and compelling. Fantastic storytelling and performances from Daniel Day Lewis and Tommy Lee Jones.

A Memory of Light was a fitting conclusion to a series that I have been reading for more than 12 years. Like the rest of the volumes, it had its good and bad points, but overall it has to rank as one of the most ambitious and expansive fantasy epics ever. I would have like to see a bit more of an epilogue, as the characters had become so familiar over the years, but I guess with Jordan dead, it was never going to happen. Sad to see it end, but happy at the same time that we even got an ending.

  • Before they are hanged - Joe Abercrombie
  • A betrayel in winter - Daniel Abrahams
  • Last Argument of Kings - Joe Abercrombie
  • Shadow of the Torturer - Gene Wolfe

  • Indie Game the Movie
  • Ijon Tichy - Raumpilot Season 2

Brave was a cute movie. Not the best pixar but by far not the worst. Loved the hair animation :)

Shadow of the Torturer was a strange book. Really strange. But at the same time it was also really intriguing, so I will definitly read the rest of the series.

kinoki - 3/50 Books | 37/50 Movies

Books
  • Dawnkins, Richard (2006), "The God Delusion" [465p] - ★★★
  • Fexeus, Henrik (2009), "Konsten att läsa tankar" (eng. The Art of Reading Minds) [267p] - ★★★ - Fexeus is a self-described mentalist and magician. I read this book in order to prepare for a show he was hosting. Interesting read on how to read people's minds withouth telepathy.
  • Lotass, Lotta (2006), "Min röst skall nu komma från en annan plats i rummet (eng. My Voice Shall Now Come From Another Part of the Room) [198p] - ★★★ - I would describe it as a collection of poems and short-stories detailing the inner workings of serial killers and their place in the modern world. I'm not fascinated by the deranged; I'm mostly sickened. It would, however, make a great movie.

  • The Station Agent (2003, dir. Thomas McCarthy) - ★★★½
  • The Island (2005, dir. Michael Bay) - ★★½
  • This is England (2006, dir. Shane Meadows) - ★★★★
  • Control (2007, dir. Anton Corbijn) - ★★★★
  • The Town (2010, dir. Ben Affleck) - ★★★★ - Mr. Affleck is turning into a good director. This works like a Heat-light. It doesn't carry the same tag of stunning craftmanship but it's by no means an inferiour product. Looking forward to watching Argo later this year.
  • Legend of the Guardians: The Owles of Ga'hoole (2010, dir. Zack Snyder) - ★★½ - I wonder how this even came to be, it doesn't seem like a passion-project like Rango. It's entertaining but never really amounts to anything special.
  • Django Unchained (2012, dir. Quentin Tarantino) - ★★★★ - Not what I expected. This is probably the least Tarantinoesque movie he's ever directed. It has never been so fun watching white people get killed.
  • Cloud Atlas (2012, dir. Wachowskis + Tom Tykwer) - ★★★★ - I don't think I picked up on the "why?" but I'm not sure it needed it. It made me interested. Guess I'll have to read that book, speaking of which...
  • Metropia (2009, dir. Tarik Saleh) - ★★★ - The aestetic really brings the eerie to this world of post-apocalyptic scandinavia. The story is a bit shallow but it keeps things interesting.
  • Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close (2011, dir. Stephen Daldry) - ★★ - There are some really powerful scenes in this movie. But, despite the horrific and tragic scenes it doesn't quite know what to do with the narrative. It shakes you but it never really means anything.

Bonus: 3/24 TV | 11/24 Video Games

TV
  • True Blood (2012, Season 5) - ★★½
  • Game of Thrones (2012, Season 2) - ★★★★
  • House of Cards (2013, Season 1) - ★★★★½

Video Games
  • Deadlight [PC] (2012, Tequila Works) - ★★★★
  • Middle Manager of Justice [iOS] (2012, Double Fine) - ★★★★
  • Sleeping Dogs [PC] (2012, United Front Games) - ★★★
  • Spec Ops: The Line [PC] (2012, Yager Development) - ★★★
  • The Cave [PC] (2013, Double Fine) - ★★★
  • Quantum Conundrum [PC] (2012, Airtight Games) - ★
  • God of War III [PS3] (2010, Santa Monica Studio) - ★★★
  • Iron Brigade [PC] (2011, Double Fine) - ★★★ - The tower-defence genre has never been my genre. Don't have the patience. But, this is the most tolerable I've played so far. I'm assuming building mechs has something to do with it (something-something child-hood-fantasy).
  • The Walking Dead [PC] (2012, Telltale Games) - ★★★★ - It's a good thing that they chose to make a zombie game because their other games are as populated as ghost towns. I'm looking at you Back to the Future. The only good Telltale adventure episodic game (Puzzle Agent is alot of good) and not only is it good, it's really good. And it isn't afraid to throw some punches on touchy subjects.
  • Machinarium [PS3] (2012, Amanita Design) - ★★★ - I don't really have the patience for point and click adventure games of this calibur. Finished half the game last year and the rest this year. But I do acknowledge great art-design, some (not all) intuitive puzzles and an amazing soundtrack.
  • Brütal Legend [PC] (2013, Double Fine) - ★★★★½ - This game was designed with me in mind. Some wonky controls aside this is probably the game that makes me the happiest playing.

★ = Bad, ★★ = Okay, ★★★ = Good, ★★★★ = Very good, ★★★★★ = Brilliant

New book:

[*] The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum. ★★★ -- Lots of noticeable differences from the film version. The biggest change is the overall tone of the book is significantly darker than the film, what with the tin woodsman beheading creatures. It's a short read but still managed to get quite repetitive by the end.

New movie:

[*] The Two Escobars. ★★★½ -- I grew up watching and playing futbol (soccer) in South America, and am quite familiar with the murder of Andres Escobar after his own goal in the 1994 World Cup. What this film does is juxtapose his humble, simple love for life with a far more infamous Colombian, Pablo Escobar. This is a tense and moving documentary. Fair warning: it's 95% in Spanish with subtitles.

Yeah, I could imagine reading a book during the commute and one at home, but I don't think I could do it.

How does reading multiple books at once work? I'm genuinely interested. I was thinking about doing this but I don't think I can do this. If you read like 3 hours a day and you read 3 books, do you change books every hour? Or do you have a book for your commute, one at home and one at work? I can't imagine doing this, if I'm reading a book I just read through it and move on the next when I'm done.

For me, I usually read one chapter of a book, and then grab the next book in my stack and read a chapter or two of that, and so on. I like it, because it helps me keep everything fresh and change up what I'm reading pretty regularly.

I'm usually reading at least 6 books at any one time.

23. argo

saw both wreck in ralph and amour today in a really bi-polar double bill that probably worked as well as ghibli's japanese my neighbour totoro - grave of the fireflies one.

wreck it ralph was quite enjoyable. ralph's characterization as a lovable depressive and the videogame world make it feel fresh and are generally well done and endearing, but unfortunately are stuck onto quite a dull plot that's typical childrens fare. lots of fun seeing all the game references - i think i saw an "aerith lives" graffiti'd on one of the walls which made me giggle. best bit was the wonderful paperman short before though <3

amour is about a elderly husband looking after his wife who has a stroke and starts to deteriorate physically. i found it really emotionally grueling and totally destroyed me. it's complex, frustrating and masterfully constructed leaving you with loads to mull over on the walk home. i watched hanaeke's cache the other day and found his use of silence eerie in that, here's it's employed to similarly strong effect and is just brutal. despite those comments it's also very human and the "amour" element is sometimes beautiful. i hope it wins best picture or at least best screenplay and actress.

finally saw argo. entertaining thriller, it's a great story and it's told in a funny, exciting and fairly stylish way (70s period piece <3). can see it being the crowd-pleasing choice for best picture, especially with it being a film partially about film-making and the america fuck yeah side to it. i found it quite similar to gattaca but would compare the core character drama in agro unfavorably to that film, the main characters relationship with his family and personal struggles are too much in the background to give it real impact. there's also loads of really contrived clock ticking tense moments near the end too that feel so cheap. still, i had a fun time with it.

New book:

[*] Body by You by Mark Lauren. ★★★ -- While written primarily for a female audience, this is the spiritual successor to You Are Your Own Gym, which is a superb bodyweight training guide. Some decent tips about nutrition and metabolic rate, but nothing earth shattering.

Also, my last update post is four pages ago, so I'll probably post it again next page even if the OP still isn't updated.

Updated the OP - Thanks to everyone who adopted to the new updating style, it's much appreciated! Everyone who is new to the thread, please read the OP and post #813 and following for rules and insight on the updating process.

UPDATE

Kwixotik - 3/50 Books | 21/50 Movies

Yes, I've never seen Star Wars V or VI before now...
Or Indiana Jones II and III. Those are probably coming up.

How much did you enjoy them? Have you watched IV and I-III before? It's not very often, that I meet somebody that dives into Star Wars relatively fresh... I suspect you knew most of the plot beforehand? And if you enjoyed Raiders, you're in for a treat! Indiana Jones II is something completely different and III is back to the roots awesome.

I updated my OP but I will post updates from now on, that I assume is easier for the Original Poster to keep track of?

Please look here and in the following few posts for a bit more insight on how to update: #813

im keeping a .txt with every book im reading/movie im watching so far, do I need to update it here in real time? seems like a hassle :p

Nope, do it on your terms. Once a month, every few weeks/days.. doesn't matter. Most of the daily updates come from people that keep track of their list in here entirely is my guess.

Time for another update:

    [*]Immortals 6/10
    [*]Hesher 7/10

Brazil was amazingly strange and weird. A beautiful relict of an imaginative decade for movies. 30 Minutes or Less was a comedy homage to buddy-cop movies of that era, that fell a bit short compared to Hot Fuzz, but was enjoyable nonetheless. Watch it for the chase scene alone!
Stolen on the other hand reminded me of Thrillers of the 90s. It was solid. Had I seen it in the 90s, I would have liked it way more than I did. Parker was better than I thought, but nothing compared to the better Statham movies. Solid movie, bad action sequences. Punch Drunk Love was interesting, but it wasn't struck by lightning. Expected more, considering it was Paul Thomas Anderson, but I liked it in the end.
Hesher was a nice little story about coming to terms with the loss of a loved one and a bit unpredictable. And funny.

Well normally I'm not such a big fan of horror-movies. I don't know, they kind of lost the appeal for me when I was old enough to watch them legally. This one surprised my though because I have to admit that I found the premise really fresh and enjoyed the littlle winks to all the cliches of older movies.

Fitzcarraldo did nothing for me. I'm pretty sure that the scenes with the ship being dragged were quite impressive for the time but other than that I found it to be pretty boring. That and I really don't like Klaus Kinski.

Eraserhead was just too weird for my taste. Maybe I did not understand it. But then again I wonder if it is even possible to understand it just by watching it. Or maybe the whole intention was that it shall not be understood?
