50 Movies. 50 Books. 1 year. - 2013 Edition

Update - smiggyRTFinally managed to get a book on my list, either Ender's Game or Dune next not decided which. Also reached halfway point with movies.

You can't go wrong with either, to be honest. I'd recommend Ender's Game solely based on the fact that it will be an easier/faster read, and it's pretty darn awesome. You still need to read both of them eventually.

Looks like fun :) Going to challenge myself to only put things I haven't read/watched here to make it more fun. Derp'd.

It's time for an update. I was sick for some time so I only read one new book but I did manage to watch five movies. I wasn't really excited about The Lovely Bones and Australia but they were on TV, so I watched them. Looper was an ok movie but nothing special. Skyfall was great - the best Bond movie with Daniel Craig. And I watched Es geschah an einem hellichten Tag - it's a black and white german/spanish/swiss crime movie from 1958. Even though you don't see the the actual crimes, it is really thrilling.

I just checked myself too and found this -->

7) Can I re-watch a movie I’ve seen before or reread an old book?
Of course you can rewatch and reread… it just won’t count towards your 50/50! We hope you will use fiftyfifty.me to inspire you to explore new stuff! Maybe next year we will include a “Reminiscing” theme, but this year around we’re asking you to go fresh.

  • Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close (2011, dir. Stephen Daldry) - ★★
  • Due Date (2010, dir. Todd Phillips) - ★★★½ - Punching children and spiting on dogs. Robert Downey Jr. can get away with these things and make them funny. I had a great time.
  • Stranger Than Fiction (2006, dir. Marc Forster) - ★★½ - I hate it how writers in movies always write terrible stories that wouldn't be any interesting as books. The premise of the movie says everything and spoils most of the movie.
  • Before Night Falls (2000, dir. Julian Schnabel) - ★★★½ - I'm having a really hard time getting into auto-biographical movies for some reasons. They kind of bore me. But on the other hand, Before Night Falls is good and Javier Bardem is magnificent as always.
  • Dark Shadows (2012, dir. Tim Burton) - ★★★ - Tim Burton is getting uninteresting. Everything he does plays it safe and lacks any sense of weight. He's a competent director and he creates some good performances but it never really goes anywhere. By the numbers.

Bonus: 4/24 TV | 14/24 Video Games

TV
  • True Blood (2012, Season 5) - ★★½
  • Game of Thrones (2012, Season 2) - ★★★★
  • House of Cards (2013, Season 1) - ★★★★½
  • Boardwalk Empire (2011, Season 2) - ★★★½ - Keeps on supplying some quality entertainment. It was a bit slower than the first season but I'm having my hopes for the third.

Video Games
  • Deadlight [PC] (2012, Tequila Works) - ★★★★
  • Middle Manager of Justice [iOS] (2012, Double Fine) - ★★★½
  • Sleeping Dogs [PC] (2012, United Front Games) - ★★★
  • Spec Ops: The Line [PC] (2012, Yager Development) - ★★★
  • The Cave [PC] (2013, Double Fine) - ★★★
  • Quantum Conundrum [PC] (2012, Airtight Games) - ★
  • God of War III [PS3] (2010, Santa Monica Studio) - ★★★
  • Iron Brigade [PC] (2011, Double Fine) - ★★★
  • The Walking Dead [PC] (2012, Telltale Games) - ★★★★
  • Machinarium [PS3] (2012, Amanita Design) - ★★★
  • Brütal Legend [PC] (2013, Double Fine) - ★★★★½
  • The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - Dragonborn [PC] (2013, Bethesda Softworks) - ★★★ - As a continuation of Skyrim this isn't really that inspiring. A few nice quests, some new things to do and I'm getting closer to 200 hours played (184 hours so far). Will start a new character soon, I think.
  • Tropico 4 [PC] (2011, Haemimont Games) - ★★★½ - I like to play city building games according to my politics. I can't really do that here but on the other hand, this is what I choose to play when it was clear Sim City wasn't going to offer that either. Tropico is clever, fun and well balanced.
  • StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm [PC] (2013, Blizzard Entertainment) - ★★★★ - The story wasn't as bad as Wings of Liberty and it kept me entertained. The RPG-elements wasn't inspired but atleast it proves that the level editor has some capacity.

★ = Bad, ★★ = Okay, ★★★ = Good, ★★★★ = Very good, ★★★★★ = Brilliant

I'm reading Tenth of December because of the recommendations on this thread and although I'm feeling resistance towards reading it, every time I read a chapter I end up thinking about it for next couple of hours-days. The style is took some getting used to but it allows for a really interesting narrative.

Windup Girl was good, but a bit of a tedious read. Chelsea was a comedy book filled with anecdotes about her life, but I felt it was lacking something. I quite liked Limitless, and could always do with more books/movies with an unnaturally smart protagonist. Stardust was excellent. I really see why people in here earlier were comparing it to The Princess Bride.

RE: Ready Player One. I want more scifi books centering around MMOs. Does anyone know any?

New book:

[*] Storm Front by Jim Butcher. ★★★ -- A slow start and it took me a few chapters to grow accustomed to the first person narrative, but overall a solid start to a new series for me. I'll definitely be reading more Dresden Files this year.

Don't judge me. I just wanted to see what the big deal was with these movies. Twilight was actually passable. Boring but not as offensive as I expected it to be. New Moon on the other hand was... well, something... I'm not sure if I want to continue with The Twilight "Saga". :x

Decided to pick up Brandon's Sanderson fourth Mistborn book, since I had read the trilogy recently and was in the mood for another one. Really enjoyed this one. I wasn't sure how I would like the drastic change in setting, but it worked very well. It sounds like he is going to be writing a sequel to this one at some point, so I'm definitely looking forward to that.

I like them a lot :). If you're hesitant after the first book a can tell you that the following books are better. The characters also improve with each book and some cool villains are introduced. The later books are also less standalone than the first and are all connected by an overarching plot. Oh and they're really funny, I'm not someone who really laughs while reading a book but Dresden has managed that a couple of times now.
