I'm here to report that I haven't updated since the beginning of this endeavor, but I've kept watching and reading these first few months of the year. It's just that I don't feel like uploading the partial list yet (which ain't that long anyway).

I said DAMN. Very impressive, good sir. I'm also riding the "read an hour or two every night" train and it is serving me well. I'm finishing up book #18 right now. Nothing close to what you've managed, but we're sitting in mid-March and I've read more this year than any previous one.

We're both sitting in a similar spot in terms of movies. I watch everything with my wife, so once she finishes her current project we're going to dive into the award season winners.

New book:

[*] Divergent by Veronica Roth. ★★★★ -- Really excellent start to a new series. People were saying it's like a better version of The Hunger Games, and while inaccurate that's not a entirely pointless comparison. I'm getting ready to start the second novel in the trilogy (the third won't be released until October). This series has already been optioned for movies, for those who like to hop on to the next big thing.

I'm never going to reach 50. Something that I, thinking back, have managed to do almost every year of my life. I'm half-way through three different books and they seem to drag forever. Hopefully spring/summer will bring back some much needed peace and quiet for reading.

Illness is the doctor to whom we pay most heed; to kindness, to knowledge, we make promise only; pain we obey.
Stranger Than Fiction (2006)
Director: Marc Forster
Rating: ★★½

Felt like expanding a bit on this review.

I hate it how writers in movies always write terrible stories that wouldn't be any interesting as books. The premise of the movie says everything and spoils most of the movie. An IRS-worker that lives a stereotypical accountant life where his only real passion is numbers gets his life narrated by a writer who is writing his life (and inevitable death).

Marc Forster is an odd director. He's never really made anything worth talking about. Quantum of Solace is most likely his most talked about movie. A movie with a few gems in it. If it wasn't for Tom Ford's Bond-design it would have been totally forgettable. Re-watched it for the Skyfall Blu-ray release. It was just plot-chase scene-plot-chase-plot, etc.

While I haven't seen Machine Gun Preacher or Monster's Ball I've seen Finding Neverland. Which is totally forgetable. My guess is that those two movies are also totally forgetable. On the other hand, the coming World War Z atleast has some resemblance to interesting. I'm looking forward to be proven wrong. So, an uninteresting director makes a movie not really that interesting. Shocking!

New movie:

[*] Deadfall. ★½ -- Laughable plot, script, acting, etc. At one point a native American fakes his death then turns on the killer and chops off his finger with a knife. He claims he saw the person coming to attack him in a dream. Okay.

The wife picked this one out, and we thought: "Hey, Eric Bana, Sissy Spacek, Olivia Wilde, and Kate Mara...could be good." Nope.

Just throwing this out there - what do you guys think about updating your lists and identifying your one favorite movie and one favorite book per quarter? So if interested you'd want to update your list by 3/31/13.

I suggest identifying your favorites with the tags. (second highlight has / in front of the first h obviously)

Deathworld was a pretty good premise, but the overly condescending main character kinda ruined it for me. Tor was good, but had consistency issues like all anthologies. White People was pretty boring. The Eyre Affair was great, but it only got an A- because I didn't get the literary references. Had I already read the books it talks about, it would have been an A, minimum.

I liked All Star Superman. It was well animated and voice acted, and kept me entertained. On the other hand, I don't feel like Batman really did anything. There was very little progression, and most of the time it was focused on Commissioner Gordon, not Bruce Wayne. The Muppets had the same problem as Eyre, in that I hadn't previously seen very much of the show, so I wasn't connected with the characters. Other than that though, fun movie.

EDIT: Atlantis was a nice little movie. Pretty standard plot, but the characters were enjoyable.

Do ~4 minute YouTube videos count as movies?

Here's the FAQ

It says that a movie is one point, regardless of the length. There's no further explanation on what exactly is a movie, but I'd guess shorts technically count as movies.

I am not trying to cheat my way in the leaderboard. It is just that I have happened to watch two short movies since the start of the year. If short movies do not count to the total, I will remove them and that is it.

Favorite book of the 1st quarter was The Hero of Ages. It answered all of the questions brought up in the first 2 books.
No real favorite movie for the first quarter. I thought all of the movies had flaws.

  • The Intouchables

Loved Abraham's whole Long Price Quartet and this was a in most ways the ending I wanted, which on the other hand also means that it was exactly the ending I expected. But overall this is definitly one of the best fantasy series there is at the moment.

The reichenbach Fall was awesome. When they first introduced Moriaty in the show I wasn't sure if I liked the way he was portrayed. In this he was just amazing. So evil, so crazy. Loved it. Can't believe that I have to wait so long until it continues.

The Intouchables was a great movie. I think what makes it so good is the fact that, given the material it was based on, it could have been a really bad movie. It could have been cheesy, it could have been overly dramatized it could have been silly. It was nothing of that sort. It was a movie about two people and their relationship, simple and honest. It never tries to force any emotion on the viewer and that's what makes it absolutly great in my opinion. Definitly my vote for movie of the first quarter of this year. Not sure about my book yet...

  • Silver, Nate (2012), "The Signal and the Noise" - ★★★★ - I love statistics. It's one of my favorite hobbies. This books speaks my language. It's not really educational but it gives context to why statistics matter.
  • Mitchell, David (2001), "number9dream" - ★★★½ - While it's good and has some really nice bending of fiction-within-fiction it feels somewhat empty. It never really goes anywhere despite being captivating. It might not sound overly positive but I was actually pleasently surprised, only bummed it wasn't more fulfilling.
  • Murakami, Haruki (2006), "Kafka on the Shore" - ★★★½ - Another book, another lost teenager in Japan. This one was a bit more out there. Japanese mythology is a bit weird but entertaining and I'm sure alot is lost in translation. Three disjointed sentences seems like the best way to describe this book.

  • Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 (2010, dir. David Yates) - ★★½ - It's got some production values, I'll give it that. But my god, nothing happens for 2½ hours.
  • Gothicka (2003, dir. Mathiue Kassovitz) - ★★ - Predictable "horror" movie that manages just to keep its head above "bad".
  • Tron: Legacy (2010, dir. Joseph Kosinski) - ★★★½ - I actually enjoyed this far more than I thought I would. Sure, the ending was all sorts of bad but it kept me entertained while looking and sounding very pretty.
  • The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (2007, dir. Julian Schnabel) - ★★★½ - I've come to the understanding I still don't like biographical movies. It's interesting and has alot of good camerawork and editing.
  • Outlander (2008, dir. Howard McCain) - ★★★ - The Predator-forumla followed to perfection. It's exciting and fun throughout. It is very formulatic though and no real effort is put to making something original more than setting.
  • The Box (2009, dir. Richard Kelly) - ★★½ - Richard Kelly has made one movie worth watching (hint: it's Donnie Darko) and I'm willing to believe that the quality of that movie is more due to pure chance than anything else. The Box is just what the back of the box says and after you've spent 10 minutes thinking about the concept you're pretty much done. Everything else in the movie is padding.

TV
  • True Blood (2012, Season 5) - ★★½
  • Game of Thrones (2012, Season 2) - ★★★★
  • House of Cards (2013, Season 1) - ★★★★½
  • Boardwalk Empire (2011, Season 2) - ★★★½
  • Banshee (2013, Season 1) - ★★½ - The formula goes something like this: someone (most likely Hood) gets a massive beating and someone (most likely Hood) engages in a graphic sex scene. Sure, it works as a sunday morning cartoon, albeit sexy and bloody, but as a higher form of entertainment it fails.
  • Star Trek (1966-67, Season 1) - ★★★★★ - Good television is good whenever it is enjoyed. I've never had the pleasure to savour this one quite as structured as I did now sitting down and watching every episode but it's worth it.
  • Hemlock Grove (2013, Season 1) - ★★★½ - While I won't be screaming to the high heavens that it was good it kept me addicted for an entire weekend. The right amount of ham and the right amount of cheese.

Video Games
  • Deadlight [PC] (2012, Tequila Works) - ★★★★
  • Middle Manager of Justice [iOS] (2012, Double Fine) - ★★★½
  • Sleeping Dogs [PC] (2012, United Front Games) - ★★★
  • Spec Ops: The Line [PC] (2012, Yager Development) - ★★★
  • The Cave [PC] (2013, Double Fine) - ★★★
  • Quantum Conundrum [PC] (2012, Airtight Games) - ★
  • God of War III [PS3] (2010, Santa Monica Studio) - ★★★
  • Iron Brigade [PC] (2011, Double Fine) - ★★★
  • The Walking Dead [PC] (2012, Telltale Games) - ★★★★
  • Machinarium [PS3] (2012, Amanita Design) - ★★★
  • Brütal Legend [PC] (2013, Double Fine) - ★★★★½
  • The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - Dragonborn [PC] (2013, Bethesda Softworks) - ★★★
  • Tropico 4 [PC] (2011, Haemimont Games) - ★★★½
  • StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm [PC] (2013, Blizzard Entertainment) - ★★★★
  • BioShock Infinite [PC] (2013, Irrational Games) - ★★★½ - Not quite the salvation I was expecting. It is, however, an exciting, original concept that's fully realised. The first BioShock is still the best BioShock.
  • Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception [PS3] (2011, Naughty Dog) - ★★★ - First of all, there is no deception--perhaps that's the deception. The shooting gallery section are more tedious than ever and instead of building some real challenge they just throw cheaper enemies at you. The story is just a series of set-pieces strung together for padding and the game doesn't start until you get to Yemen. The tech is amazing though, really amazing at time but the PS3 is showing her age.

Music
  • Blood Donation - Mariam the Believer (2013, Spotify) - ★★★★½ - First record I listened to this year and a shining example of great new music. A great debut. Favourite track: The String of Everything.
  • Push the Sky Away - Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds (2013, Spotify) - ★★★½ - Another good Nick Cave-album but not as creative as Abattoir Blues/Lyre of Orpheus. Favourite track: Jubilee Street.
  • Pale Green Ghosts - John Grand (2013, Spotify) - ★★★★½ - Fell in love with this the first second I listened to it. Favourite track: Black Belt.
  • The Next Day - David Bowie (2013, Spotify) - ★★★½ - Some really good songs spread out in some solid songs. The cover is a mystery on many levels. Favourite track: The Next Day.
  • The Golden Age - Woodkid (2013, Spotify) - ★★★★ - Fantastic aestetic. Everything I hoped Channel Orange would be but wasn't. Favourite track: Iron.
  • Woman - Rhye (2013, Spotify) - ★★★★ - Relaxed and aesteticly pleasing.

★ = Bad, ★★ = Okay, ★★★ = Good, ★★★★ = Very good, ★★★★★ = Brilliant

New movie:

[*] The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. ★★★★ -- Critics didn't like this movie. GAF didn't like this movie. The wife and I loved it. This was probably due to lowered expectations, but the movie really clicked with me. I understand some of the gripes about expanding the novel into three films being a cheap cash-in, but I appreciated the amount of detail in the film. There were lots of nice little touches to the story that would have otherwise ended up on the chopping block. It's been 15+ years since I read the novel, so I can't really vouch for how closely it ties with the text...but it felt right.

IN PROCESS: The Hobbit (J.R.R. Tolkien)

  1. Building Stories (Chris Ware)
  2. Batman: Year One (Frank Miller, David Mazzucchelli)
  3. Batman: The Dark Knight Returns (Frank Miller, Klaus Janson, Lynn Varley)
  4. When David Lost His Voice (Judith Vanistendael)
  5. Francona: The Red Sox Years (Terry Francona, Dan Shaughnessy)
  6. Point Your Face at This (Demetri Martin)

MOVIES
  1. Looper
  2. VHS
  3. Argo
  4. Brave
  5. Beasts of the Southern Wild
  6. Indie Game: The Movie
  7. Wreck it Ralph
  8. The Place Beyond the Pines

New movie:

[*] Les Miserables. ★★★ -- Anne Hathaway stole the show. Her version of "I Dreamed A Dream" crapped on everything else in the film since it was so much better than what came before and after. I found the film version to be more emotionally engaging than the Broadway musical, largely due to the intimate close ups the camera provides.

Finished up The Name of the Wind and really enjoyed it. Was burnt out on fantasy novels but I really like the way Rothfuss writes and the story is entertaining.

I also watched Heavy Weights because my roommate recommended it and thought it was decent but nothing I would want to watch again. I thought Argo was a good movie but I have the same problem I had with The Town and that is the actors are hard to understand at times because of the background noise being so loud.

Updated the list again - first quarter is almost over and there still a couple of guys joining in. I'm not as far with my books as I wanted to, but I manage to read almost every day atm, so at least I made a habit of it.

Is this the Chaplin/Hitler movie? I've been meaning to see this after watching a documentary about Chaplin last year.

Yep, it is. I watched it during last years 50/50 challenge and it is pretty amazing all things considered. Chaplins speach in the end of the movie gave me goosebombs.

Glaurungr - 50/50 books | 16/50 movies

Update! New entries in italic.

Congrats! 50 books seems to be the harder part for most people, but you just powered through that in less than a quarter of the time. Pretty amazing.

These actors are the reason I still have it on my watchlist. Maybe I'll better not watch it though.

Just throwing this out there - what do you guys think about updating your lists and identifying your one favorite movie and one favorite book per quarter? So if interested you'd want to update your list by 3/31/13.

I suggest identifying your favorites with the tags. (second highlight has / in front of the first h obviously)

I like it.

    [*]Stuff White People Like (B-)
    [*]The Eyre Affair (A-)

My favourite book with Adams 'Last chance to see'. He simply nailed everything in it, from setting to characters and humor. Only thing I still have to read from him is 'the long dark tea-time of the soul'. Maybe I'll finally read it, if I get close to 50 books.

I think I am stepping out of the challenge this year. The twins were born a few weeks ago and I won't have time to read or watch movies for a while.

That's a pretty good reason to drop out. Congratulations on the twins!
