I love Hitchhiker's but found that most people I know who didn't happen upon the book organically tend to hear the praise heaped upon it and end up less than enthralled. The same thing seems to apply to Monty Python and to a lesser extent, Dr. Who, so I think it's probably something we can blame the Brits for.

Still, I'd feel better about your review if you didn't also give Ready Player One five stars, you rat bastard.

You're exactly right...I came in with ridiculously high expectations. All in all, at three stars I thought it was an enjoyable read. It just didn't blow me away like I hoped it would. I'll still give at least one of the sequels a chance to see if it clicks with me better.

I got through the second book by Rothfuss and really enjoyed it. I don't see myself getting through all the books unless I can continue the pace that I am currently on. Now I need to find the next book to start because Rothfuss is still working on the next book in the series.

New book:

[*] The Convert by Oliver Broudy. ★★ -- A look into the life of a burn victim who eventually comes to convert from Atheism to Christianity. The protagonist is interesting, but the author gets bogged down with weak religious analogies and his own poor writing skills.

Well, I guess there is nothing much to say about Calvin and Hobbes. It is timeless and perfect. I really enjoy the complete edition. Those books are massive though and reading for more than an hour makes my arms cramp up :)

The Dark Knight Rises was... not as bad as I thought it would be, but still pretty bad.

I read 'Salem's Lot in one sitting, out loud last night while my girlfriend listened. I think we went to bed at like 4AM. It was a fun evening. It was actually my first King novel, having only read some of his short stories prior to this. (I've seen like every movie adaptation of his works though)

Can I still get in on this thread or is it too late? I already keep lists of the books and movies I read and watch.

New movie:

[*] Undefeated. ★★★★★ -- This is the single best sports movie I've ever watched. Follows the struggles and successes of an inner city football team in Memphis as they fight towards a winning record and the playoffs. It touches on everything from character and perseverance to race relations and paternal love. It's on Netflix and is a must see in my opinion.

I guess the movie was OK. The action was solid, even though a lot of the shots looked a bit too much like music videos for me and I thought it was maybe too brutal at some times. I also didn't get what happend at the end but the story was thin as hell anyway.

New movie:

[*] Zero Dark Thirty. ★★★★½ -- Basically two separate films, each wonderful in its own way. The intelligence gathering/analytical manhunt was my favorite, as it closely mirrors my line of work. There were some clear embellishments, but Bigelow took the time to get an accurate portrayal of what went down. The actual raid sequence was intense, action packed, and made it a point to not glorify the act of killing. Some great minor characters in the film top complement the excellent lead actress.

I was a little disappointed with Jiro Dreams of Sushi. It is a good documentary, with wonderful cinematography of the craft of preparing sushi. But the problem I had with it is such a single-minded dedication of a life to doing one thing and doing it really well, to the complete neglect of everything else life has to offer, is more sad than admirable or inspirational.

Garrett P.I. series is amazing, I'm pleasantly surprised.

New movie:

[*] 48 Hours. ★½ -- Guess I'm 20+ years late to the party on this one. So awful. Blatant 80s racism as humor elements, no plot to speak of, Nolte was trash, and Murphy wasn't funny. Not sure I'll make it through the sequel.

Just got to 50 movies, odd thing is that I had said I was going to concentrate on re-watching movies that I liked this year, but not a single one of these is a re-watched movie. Books, not nearly so far...

As long as more than half (50%) of it is new to you, you’re good to go – count it!

So unless you were over 50% done with King Lear in 2012, I'd definitely count it. There's nothing against counting a play, either.

Now that I finally managed to finish the Tokarczuk book I hope I can catch up with my reading again. With 18 books in 17 weeks I'm still good but there are some books that I really want to re-read and I might need a bigger cushion than that... maybe I just go for some more OZ books, since they are rather short...

Stalker was OK I guess. I just thought that the whole philosophy behind it was a bit forced. I absolutely loved Princess Bride. I can't believe ever never saw it before. I could see my younger self having a total crush on Wesley :D

14. Journey Back to Eden: My Life And Times Among the Desert Fathers by Mark Gruber ★★★★

Movies

60. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy ★★
61. Thor ★★
62. You Only Live Once ★★★
63. Amelie ★★★★
64. Moneyball ★★★★

Journey Back to Eden is an unusual choice for me. It is the spiritual journal of a Benedictine monk, who happens to be a former professor of mine, who spent a year in Egypt living among the Copts for his dissertation in anthropology. It's probably of no interest to anyone here, but as an old acquaintance his recollections from Egypt were fascinating to me.

If it weren't for Once Upon a Time in Anatolia, which is the most boring film I have ever sat through, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy would have been the most boring film I've seen all year. It's got a fantastic cast of British actors with Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, Toby Jones, Ciaran Hinds, and Tom Hardy, and received high reviews, so I was extremely disappointed with it. It's based on a novel and was previously adapted as a miniseries, and I got the impression some prior familiarity with the story is almost required to follow this movie (I had none). I was too emotionally detached from it to pay attention to the plot or care about who the mole was. I think a good spy story has to balance two conflicting demands. There has to be mystery, so you're never quite sure if anyone or anything is really what it appears to be, but at the same time you have to be able to relate to the characters and plot so you have some emotional investment in what's happening. This film is completely lacking in any human element. TV shows like The Americans and Homeland do a much better job of telling a good spy story.

Thor is an utterly forgettable popcorn flick. Nothing much to say really. I thought Thor was one of Marvel's least interesting superheroes back when I read comics, but this was free on Amazon Prime and I liked The Avengers, so I gave it a shot.

You Only Live Once is a classic Bonnie and Clyde-type story from Fritz Lang. It was enjoyable, but I've read that about 10 minutes of film was cut because it was considered too violent by Hollywood in the 1930s, and it does feel pretty neutered at times. The 1967 Bonnie and Clyde film follows the same formula and surpasses it, which perhaps made it harder for me to fully appreciate this one.

Amelie is one of the best movies I've seen all year, and I don't normally go for romantic comedies. It's a little too art house for my tastes, which kept it just shy of greatness for me. One of those films that leaves you feeling really happy after you watch it.

Moneyball is another really good film in a genre I don't normally like. Very bittersweet, because in the end, people like Billie Beane can't win against the big money, as any effective strategy they devise in the short term will just be assimilated by teams like the Yankees and Red Sox.

60. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy ★★

If it weren't for Once Upon a Time in Anatolia, which is the most boring film I have ever sat through, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy would have been the most boring film I've seen all year.

That's a shame. It's on my watch list for this year and I had high hopes since I'm familiar with the story and find it interesting. I'll probably slip it back to later in the list.

As far as my progress, I'm currently struggling through Wyrd Sisters by Pratchett. It's not particularly bad, but we have a lot of real-life issues going on right now and I'm having difficulty getting more than 10-15 minutes of reading at a time. I thought of abandoning it for a different book, but I guess I'll press through it for now.

If you've read the novel or seen the BBC miniseries I think there's a good chance you'll appreciate Tinker Tailor more than I did. I'm in the minority opinion on that one.

What did you think of Equal Rites and Mort? I'm definitely going to make time to read those this year, but I didn't want to burn myself out on Discworld by reading too many at once.

I dug them both, but Wyrd Sisters is making me retroactively like Equal Rites less...if that makes sense. It follows the same main character from that storyline.

The Death novels are the ones I have the highest hopes for long term. I'm reading everything in publication order and hoping for a big payoff, but it's been a bit uneven so far. None of them have been bad, but this one in particular is not holding my interest.

Tinker Tailor was a big disappointment to me too. After all the hype and top reviews I was expecting much more. When you find out who the mole is and you don't even give a shit the movie has totally failed.

New book:

[*] Wyrd Sisters by Terry Pratchett. ★★★ -- This was the first Discworld novel I struggled to finish, so it's time to jump over to something else for a bit. The story was predictable given how it riffs off Macbeth, but even the characters began to wear out their welcome by the last few chapters.

I really enjoyed all five books I've read recently. Wouldn't have watched Seven Psychopaths or Bachelorette if it hadn't been a movie night with a few friends. I was really looking forward to the first part of the Hobbit but unfortunately I was really disappointed in the end - maybe I had too high expectations. Wreck it Ralph and Forbidden Planet were great movies!

Currently I'm reading Ready Player One and have still a few pages in Ulysses but I hope I'll finish it soon.
