The number two video rental company, Movie Gallery, who purchased Hollywood Entertainment in April, gave a weaker than expected sales forecast in an announcement today. As a result of the prospectus given, the company's stock dropped 15% today to $27.84, though it's recovered slightly in after hours trading.

As one remedy to address the weak outlook, the company said it would be shutting down 51 unprofitable locations of its Game Crazy chain by the end of June 2005. It will also be re-branding Movie Gallery's 23 Game Zone stores with the more recognized Game Crazy moniker.

Most publishers would agree that Game Crazy has historically been a valued customer, reaching a similar enthusiast demographic that EB and Gamestop do. Indeed Game Crazy's presales numbers on some titles have at times rivalled EB and Gamestop despite not having nearly the same number of storefronts.

Joe Malugen, Chairman, CEO and President of Movie Gallery issued the following statement with regard to the reasons for the softness: "For the second quarter of 2005, we were originally forecasting our same-store sales to be down slightly; however, the recent weakness in the home video release schedule is having a significant adverse impact on our results. In addition, with the theatrical box-office in its 17th week of a slowdown and enduring its worst slump in two decades, we believe that the flow-through of an unimpressive slate of titles will continue to adversely impact our stores in both the rural and urban markets over the next few months."

On a somewhat lighter note, the Movie Gallery promoted Tim Price to the position of EVP/CFO, which was the same position he occupied at Hollywood Entertainment before April's acquisition.

Wasn't Blockbuster supposed to buy Hollywood Video? Whatever happened to that?

i want to see a list of stores that are closing. i hope the one down the street from me isn't.

Same. I thorougly enjoy the GOOD CUSTOMER SERVICE they provide, even through the extreme look they try to play with.

you were making sense until you said gamerush.

and the blockbuster thing fell through because BB was getting scared. The official response was because of monopoly laws (the feds would get 'em).

Really. GameCrazy's pretty damn cool. It's sad to see them go (I can't imagine there are too many more than 51 honestly)

No-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o! :(

This was one of the few really quality game specific retailers around. It's going to hurt to see them go.

I want a list too. I hope at least one of the local stores will stay open.

If not - I got dibs on their Rumble Roses calendar! :lol

I don't mind so much, really. Its not like I talk to the clerks at any of em, anyways, so I dont have a real preference. Plus with the glut of game stores everywhere, its no surprise to me that some wouldn't be successful.

there are 2 Game Crazy stores near me:

Round Lake, IL
Gurnee, IL

I've purchased games and systems from them (i.e. my Platium Gamecube, Time Crisis 3 for PS2)

don't want to lose yet another chain :(

less retail competition = bad for us gamers.

I liked Game Crazy until I asked an employee friend to get a game for me during the $15/3 sale and he wanted to sell it back to me for 8x the price.

Game Crazy are nazis. I tried to return a game I got duplicates of last Xmas, with the receipt, and they gave me fucking hell. Eventually I got store credit. Haven't gave them any of my money since.

We have over 770 stores. My store is very low revenue but reasonably profitable/new (been with it since we opened 6/26/04) so hopefully this isn't for my store. Anyhow, I'd be surprised if they closed more considering how profitable GC was in comparison to the Hollywood side for the past few years. Ugh, it must be said that GC >>>> all others (I worked for the travesty that is EB) because they cater infinitely more to gamers then the other stores. Tournaments, displays, special order program, fuller game catalog, our memberships, HEAD AND SHOULDERS above the competition. And this is before my bias.....

The local Gamecrazy would give me promo stuff and I'd hardly have to ask for it. Even if I didn't buy whatever the promo was, they'd just toss me a tshirt or plushie. Plus one of the guys is a Guilty Gear fan. They just didn't ever act like they thought they were hot stuff, which is what I seem to get from other chains.

All you Assmasters of the Last Fudgepocalypse that piss and moan about EB and Gamestop selling you gutted games had best face up and start visiting Game Crazy. They don't sell you guts!

Just another reason why GC rox!

Big middle fingers to other game retailers, especially Gamerushtards!

i liked the gamecrazy's out here in peoria (we've got 2), until all the cool guys who used to work there left, and the guys who run things now don't know shit for shit.

i'll only end up there if i cant find it anywhere else. like a sealed copy of nocturne

GameCrazy is the best game store for a handful of reasons:

1. They focus on CUSTOMER SERVICE, not halfassed promotions
2. In-store displays of every console.
3. Want to see how a game is? There's a "demo it out" guarantee. :)
4. Large used game selection due to stock from both tradeins and rentals

I'm thinking that this means that plans for opening more GC stores outside of the few stripmall ones is axed? I know my stores should be ok, maybe one might close but that would be more of a blessing.

take that drew =P

If I were to work at a game store, I'd like to work at Game Crazy. I feel bad for the folks at the two Game Crazies I know of.

Hopefully they'll be fine. Although I really wish they'd do a better job at getting more than two copies for a game. It drives me crazy.

gamecray... another store that's nowhere to be found near me... doesnt matter much i guess...
Aren't you in BK? There is one in Canarsie that I visited often.

Gamecrazy is great because of the free game rentals you get when you buy a game system from them. Hopefully, no additional stores will close other than the 51 that's mentioned.

The local GameCrazy is ace. Hope they aren't getting shut down, because they have some really sharp cats staffing it.

The one by your house used to be (or is still) ran by a friend of mine... Nathan.. good guy who went out of his way to make sure he had a good staff...

And that's what it's all about - number of store fronts...Game Crazy is little to no market share. I say 1-2 more years before they go to.

I like my Game Crazy simply because it's the closest gaming store, and they have respectable trade-in values, but good lord, they are horrible at getting new games in. They honestly got no copies of MGS3 in other than there preorders for like two weeks.

On the flipside, they have a lot of gaming peripherals. One of the few places around here with the RE4 chainsaw, the Ace Combat 5 controller, and several other arcade sticks, action figures, etc. etc. etc. They even carry the steel batallion controller.

Considering that Game Crazy has been doing this for only about 5 years, and EB/Gamestop have been in it for about 20 years EACH, they're doing pretty well.

EB has about 2000 stores, Gamestop has about 1900, and Game Crazy will have about 700 stores after the underperforming stores are closed (only about a 4% reduction). There's only a Game Crazy in about 1 out of 3 Hollywood Video stores, so there's plenty of room for expansion.

Also, considering how completely new Game Crazy is, their sales figures are decent. 2004 was ~300 million. Gamestop was 1.8 billion, and EB was 1.98 billion. Post merger, 700 Game Crazy stores will be against ~4000 EBstop (or whatever they call the combined stores). Yes, the size differential is pretty large, but GC is doing a LOT of things right, and I think they have a chance, chain link fencing or no.

Hm... have the closing locations been specified anywhere? Didn't see it in the article or their website yet. Hopefully there'll be a few good closeout deals.

Should have seen it coming after the 3 for $15 old school sale they had in April. I managed to pick up Paper Mario, Majora's Mask and Donkey Kong Country for $15.

:D

The Game Crazy near me is pretty good. Much better than most of the EBs and Gamestops in my area. They also seem to have a much better and wider selection of used games than EB or Gamestop. I've found quite a few jems there over the years.

Yes, that is awesome. I got one sheet of rental coupons when I bought my Gamecube, and another sheet for joining their membership program. That's 24 free rentals over the next year. :)
