6 years later, let's talk about how beautiful Mirror's Edge Catalyst is.

People can say anything about EA, DICE or Mirror's Edge... but even to this day it's a better looking game than most new games.

Bonus: The first game looks amazing too

RIP my sweet child, you were my favorite 7/10 franchise.

I played it on PS4 and thought it looked pretty bad. Really poor image quality. In general the game was a disappointment after the original.

I'm sure it's nice on PC though.

I agree, the game looked (and still looks) absolutely fantastic. I always loved the atmosphere and look of Mirror's Edge, and Catalyst pushed the dream even further, loved it.
And even if it had some flaws, I still don't consider it a bad game at all, but I just love this series.

Here's my contribution too, Flicker album I made a while back with my best screenshots

Xbox version has FPS boost but still stuck at 900p, would have loved it if it also got a resolution boost like the first one.

Could do with Nextgen upgrade.
I'd gladly pay for it.
Alongside the 2008 original getting a Nextgen Remaster.

To anybody that played it, what was the big issue with it? I enjoyed the first one enough but never played this because it reviewed so poorly. Is it worth playing today?

The lighting devs really should be praised. Real time or baked or whatever the lighting in those games really elevated everything else.

The game is more open than the first one, you have an open city (it's still kind of linear to provide a good platforming gameplay, but it's open areas with multiple directions possibles) where you can free roam, leading to different missions areas.

Because of this, the game has some of the generic open world flaws that many games have, like some repetitive side content, boring ubisoft style collectible etc...
They also tried to do the usual "rpg" progression that most games tried to do at that time (and still do), with a skill tree, something Mirror's Edge definitely didn't need.

I still think it's a great game though. I liked being able to run around more freely and have fun experimenting with the gameplay, trying some of the challenges created by other players in the city etc, it feels really nice to move around this city if you enjoy the gameplay of Mirror's Edge, and it's pure enjoyment to just appreciate the scenery of this beautiful world. The missions are really good, as good as the first one to me, the atmosphere is fantastic, the gameplay is still amazing (minus point for the skill tree but that's quickly not a problem since you get the essentials very quickly), and the boring side content is just side content so if you don't like the collectible and other ubisoft style activities, you can just ignore them.

It's a good game that has some flaws because it tried to add some features just to follow some of the popular trends instead of just being its own thing, but that doesn't make it a terrible game like many people say.

I think the problems of the game will only really be a problem if you're the type of person who try to 100% the game, but if you don't and just have fun with the core content, it's fine.

It looked good but I definitely preferred the art style of the original. It was pretty striking for its time and still holds up today.

You remember the term "underrated gem"?

This is going to be one of them in the future.

One of the few example why companies stopped bothering making good games given how much degenerate untermenshen gamers where becoming.

I liked the concept to Catalyst, but personally? I much preferred the art direction and style in the first game. Things in Catalyst look way too cluttered and noisy. Not a huge fan.

Great game. Very worth your time. I even liked it better than the first personally.

I don't get all the hate

The big problem was the massive change in art direction and narrative. It was wholly removed from the original and a lot of fans wanted to see a prequel or a sequel to that game. Instead we get a pseudo reboot.

The game Itself is fine in terms of gameplay. Narrative is weak like the first game. So really the only problems are the art direction and lack of continuity - which may not be a problem for most. I definitely suggest you give it a try if it at all interests you.

Very, very nice screenshots, I bumped into this thread whilst looking for a possibility to a Mirror's Edge 3. Man, I really liked the art direction of these 2 games. Combined with the music, for me it was such a surreal experience, huge city, yet somehow on those roofs it had a feeling of desolation, but in a good sense.
But I think I liked the first a tiny bit better, is there any news of a sequel/prequel/reboot?

I loved the first game but stopped playing Catalyst fairly early on.

I can't remember why I did. I really should go back and give it another try once I clear out a bit more from my current games I'm going through.

Pretty much this, i loved it on x360 and i picked this up on ps4 because it was super cheap. First the bollocks of it not letting me play without setting up a shitty EA account but then the fact the games was janky as fuck during one cutscene the camera kind of gave up and decided to go somewhere else taking my view with it leaving the characters offscreen and me staring into a void behind the scenes

To be fair though, this style they are using is just box modeling with some dirt textures, it's the easiest thing to make in 3D, and the sort of stuff you make to practice. First-year students at any 3D animation school could easily replicate those screenshots.

That doesn't mean it looks bad, it looks good, but it's not something I would highlight as a great-looking game.

imagine a raytracing patch for it... just imagine... all those beautiful reflective surfaces without the SSR artifacts!

I remember it was 900p ps4 and 720p on xbx1
Wish they patched it

it's dynamic 900p on both, the og Xbox One simply couldn't really get much higher than 720p. but if you play it on a One X or later model you will get a locked 900p
but it is indeed sad that it is stuck there on console.
