A major earthquake struck just off the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince on Tuesday, sparking a tsunami watch for parts of the Caribbean, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

There was no immediate report of damage or injuries from the quake. However, The Associated Press reported that a hospital had collapsed.

The quake had a reported magnitude of 7.0 and was centered about 10 miles (16 km) off the coast and about 6 miles (10 km) underground, according to the USGS.

A tsunami watch was posted for Haiti and parts of Cuba, the Dominican Republic and the Bahamas, but historical data suggests a destructive, widespread tsunami was not a threat, the USGS reported.

Damn that sucks bad =(.

Puerto Rico is also a ticking bomb as there hasn't been one in nearly 91 years, way beyond the average of 60 years or so, so most people here are waiting for a truly strong one to hit the island hard.

Hope the people in Haiti can manage this situation. Sucks for them, can't catch a break =/

Man, those poor people. They are already struggling as is.

And I worry that the buildings they do have are not built to the highest standards due to the lack of building code enforcement and corruption.

Raymond Joseph, Haiti's ambassador to the United States, told CNN he had little information about the extent of damage from the quake, which had a reported magnitude of 7.0. But he said the suffering inflicted on the impoverished Caribbean nation was likely to be "catastrophic."
"The only thing I can do now is pray and hope for the best," he said.

Joseph said one government official -- the only one he was able to reach -- told him houses had crumbled "on the right side of the street and the left side of the street."

The quake could be felt strongly in the eastern Cuban city of Santiago, about 250 miles west of Port-au-Prince.
"It was very strong. It lasted for almost a minute," said Marlon Romaguera, who runs a bed-and-breakfast there.

Why? A cruise sounds fun.

And you really couldn't be in a much better place than a boat . . . well, unless the quake produces a big tsunami.

Actually even then they are only in real danger incase the boat is in shallow water. Or atleast I think so...

well me and the fam hit a road block :/

None of our phone calls and none of our friend's phone calls are going through, im just waiting for return emails now.

infrastructure was already shit back there, now..... and its not good that pictures still are not coming in.

My family and I are on pins and needles right now because it hit 10 miles from where a majority of our family lives. The worst thing is that we don't know and were aren't sure with the communication blackout. Damn it alll

I hope everyone you know is okay. Hell, I hope everyone in Haiti are fine.

This is horrible news. I can't even imagine an earthquake of that magnitude. It must feel pretty scary. ;(

This sucks, I have a bunch of family that lives in the Port-au-Prince area. We haven't heard much word from them yet. I just really hope they are alright.

Guy on Sky News said "this is the worst thing that has ever happen to us" and "without the help of the International community you can forget about us"

:/

My mom's freaking out. Neither she nor my aunt and uncle have been able to get in touch with my grandfather in Port-au-Prince.

Msn.com : Presidential palace, parliament, national cathedral reported destroyed

Damn thats messed up... chain of earthquakes in a short time.

I read Paul Farmer's book a while ago, Haiti is a country in shambles, and unfortunately, much of the world has abandoned it. Hopefully, this brings much needed relief to a country that already desperately needed it.

They've pretty much been abandoned since they gained independence

Numerous public buildings were destroyed along with the palace, including the parliament building, the Finance Ministry, The Public Works Ministry, the Palace of Justice and Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Port-au-Prince, the national cathedral, Haiti TV reported.

I dont think anyone outside of Haiti will know for sure until communication stabilizes.
