refresh + framerate > resolution any day.

I will just put the screen on the other side of the room.

however 120 inch is kinda dog shit ppi tho. so not sure if my room is deep enough for that rofl.

I don't know about 120", but 1080p looks fine on a 100", but really shows how much better blu-ray 1080p is versus streaming. Kinda wish games could have a 1080/120 mode, my projector supports up to 1080/240.

That being said, a TV will always beat a projector for black level and contrast.

Disregard any other differences like screen vs projector / burn in / power usage etc etc.

I'm curious how much people specifically value screen size vs resolution.

I'm asking because I'm considering between these two choices for my next screen upgrade. I currently own a 50" TV and it quickly felt too small for me, so I'm not sure if even a 75" upgrade would end up being satisfactory to me. It seems any decent 4K projector is out of my price range unfortunately.
I have a 75 Sony 4k tv on my main floor and a 120 inch screen with a 1080 benq projector in my game room (120 hz). I prefer the 120 for both movies and games and use it whenever it is feasible.

I'd take the 4K without a second thought.
Having a lower resolution and a larger screen will look much worse.

Well I’m certainly in the minority here but I have a Sony VPL-HW45 and a 100” grey scale screen. I bought it about two years ago because 4K projector tech was not really at the quality it needed to be at my price point. I’m not really a Sony fan but they make great projectors, and this is coming previously from Epson, BenQ, and Optoma. I’d wager it’s really about the quality of the panel or image, or it should be. A lot of 4K native content still doesn’t blow my socks off, but when it’s on point then obviously it’s amazing. If the 85” LG gets down under $3k then I’ll pay attention. Until then I’ll stick with 1080p. Oddly enough I recently sold my Sony 55” 4K LCD panel for a 60” Elite Kuro, and it’s absolutely an upgrade. I still think Pioneer and to a lesser extent Panasonic plasma panels still can’t be beat for PQ. Again LG is the top dog now but until their big sets come down in price I’m good.

I seem to also be in the minority, but I will say I actually have both of the above options, 75" 4K TV in our living room and a 120" screen being fed by an LG PF1000 1080p projector in a room upstairs. I have had this setup for I think about 3 years now, and I watch movies / TV on the 120" screen almost every night. I sit about 8 feet away, I wanted the theater experience at home, and I love it. I know everyone is going to say I'm crazy but Its kind of hard to tell the detail difference between the 4K and 1080p at that size, I think a lot of it has to do with how the projector throws the image, yes if I stand up and get in front of the screen I can see the pixels. But when I'm sitting down in the recliners I don't see pixels, I just see the image. I should say I do not game at all on the 120", I only watch movies / TV but for me its screen size all day long. My wife and especially my kids also love watching movies in our low rent theater setup.

I would go 120" as well. I have had both 1080p and now 4k pj on a 120" screen and the resolution increase is not a huge difference. Sure, it is there but those that say 1080p is blurry at 120" either have not seen one or have seen a shitty one. I have a 65" 4k in my living room but, I am in the minority here as well, as I much prefer the projector - for any content.

interesting that you say it looks amazing considering most in this thread says 1080p would look bad at that size. What's up with that do you think?

Also Have you had a look at any 4k projectors to compare?

I watched Dune on my 50" tv and all I could think about was how better it would look on a big projector. so i respect your need for size :messenger_sunglasses:

I understand why people think blowing up a 1080p image to 120" sounds terrible but with a good projector (not some cheap ebay stuff) it still looks great. Projectors give a filmic quality that just feels different to TVs.

I doubt you will find any people who own a good projector with large screen say they prefer watching on a smaller screen. Under 100" I would go TV.

Some games will look better than others depending on there resolution and use of AA. Last of us 2 , demon souls, god of war etc look incredible and its so immersive on a large screen with 5.1 sound or headset.

Movies of course also look amazing as long as they high bitrate, Blu-ray etc. Dune was excellent even for a stream. Garbage in garbage out...

The only games i wouldn't play on it are competitive 1st person shooters.

Projectors do have disadvantages , bulb life and having a light controlled room to get the best out of them being the main two.

If you got the budget and space then for me its a no brainer. If budget is limited , room cant be light controlled (There is screens to help this) and its being used constantly as your main viewing device a TV may be better suited.

Old photo as this was 110" screen before i went 120"

This is a classic case of rating something sight unseen. (Speaking on a subject you aren't informed on, can only speculate about) Take it from those of us who have both and can compare them. A 1080p image on a 120 inch screen looks fantastic. Don't forget you can always utilize super sampling.

Thanks a lot for your input y'all. and good to know 1080 can look good at 120"

I'm still undecided as of yet but considering i've owned tv sets all my life and big projector is just an alluring choice for me. but then again i've yet to properly experience 4k. need to mull this over now

Quite honestly, the biggest advantage with 4k now is not so much the resolution, but HDR. It's still hit or miss, but when you get content that is 4k with a good HDR presentation, it will blow you away.
Even at 75", the benefits of 4k from 1080p are minimal in regards to resolution.

This chart is helpful in giving you an idea of how you really need a bigger display to get benefit from 4k and even 75" ain't all that - basically have to be sitting about five feet away to see a difference.
Of course, this is entirely subjective. And, as I have said, there are other benefits to 4k over just straight pixels.

Either way you win!! Happy viewing
