For all its faults, the film still accomplished things with its photography that had literally never been seen before in cinema. Very, very few DPs out there could have pulled off what Lubezki did. If that isn't good enough for a cinematography Oscar, then just about everybody who has ever won one in the past ought to turn theirs back in.

The only category that was more of a stone cold lock for Gravity than cinematography was VFX.
Then they can all turn theirs in. Cuaron has not only done better films, but also better-looking films. I actually found sound mixing and vfx were most apt, partly because of their level of difficulty in Gravity.

But I mean come on.

Best visual effects
Best sound editing
Best sound mixing
Best cinematography
Best film editing
Best original score
Best director

At least yank a few of those.

Most important win:

Matthew McConaughey

Truely deserved! His performance was/is amazing!

Man, I'm so happy (and happy for him).

[ Congratulations, Van Zan ;-) ]

I've been a hardcore fan of the Oscars all my life, and this was the most predictable year I can remember. I found the show a bit dull because of it, but I was also pleased that the most deserving winners triumphed in nearly every category.

Gravity took exactly the awards it deserved, but no others (like Best Picture as some were predicting). I also thought the 4 acting winners were by far the best in their respective categories. I wasn't even a fan of Jared Leto before seeing DBC, but he turned in what is now one of my favorite film performances of all time. McConaughey was also extraordinary, and I've been waiting to see Cate Blanchett win a Best Actress award since she was robbed of the Oscar for Elizabeth 15 years ago.

I'm pretty happy with the wins tonight. 12 Years for best picture was just. And all of the acting awards were solid choices. Very pleased to see Lupita chosen for supporting actress, and Blanchett for lead. Lead actor was such a competitive category that I would have been happy to see any of them win.
I didn't care for Gravity that much, but I can't say it didn't deserve most of the categories it won in.
Also cool to see Her take home at least one.
As far as the actual show... pretty mediocre, as has been the trend the past few years. Ellen was not very good, and I had low expectations going in.

Leo needs to get back to a more grounded role if he ever wants to win. He is constantly playing larger than life characters, perhaps that is the weakness of his role selection. Blood Diamond was perhaps his best role and closest to winning

The academy is challenging him to go beyond what he is doing because he can do it. Recently he has played a lot of character roles, roles like Gatsby, Belfort, Hoover, Calvin Candie don't challenge Leo outside of his comfort zone. Perhaps his role in Django was the most outside of his comfort zone I have seen but that seemed like a small role he was having fun with more than Oscar material

Tumblr is so fucking salty right now about McConaughey's win. It's kinda hilarious. I doubt most of the people I follow have even seen Dallas Buyers Club. They're just pissed that Leo didn't win.

It's just mobbing at this point. Half the time the Oscars really aren't about performance but political and motivational (and past work) shit like "Who should we give this thing this year?", otherwise Meryl Streep should have gotten like 10 Oscars already. They should have just given him one already, so he can be more motivated for his future work. If I didn't know how the Oscars work I wouldn't suggest this as the best should win and it was Matthew this time.

Leo always gets nominated in years where there are better performances. It's just bad luck. But it is what it is. I never feel like he was robbed.

I'd bet most of them haven't seen The Wolf of Wall Street, either, which makes it even more ridiculous. I guess the internet shuts down if it doesn't have something to be outraged about at all times.

Anyone who has paid attention to the precursor awards or Oscar bloggers/pundits for the past 2 months (at least) knew going in that McConaughey was a total lock.

Gravity was a horrible movie. Good tech demo

Horrible movie? You gotta have pretty rotten taste to say such a thing.

A movie isn't only as good as its complexity. You might say it has a simple premise and plot, but talking shit about it is just weird. It's the best executed movie, and the only fresh take on an old concept, unlike all the other nominees aside from Her.

12 Years a Slave won for Best Movie...
Best Actor : Matthew McConaughey.
Best Animation Movie : Frozen.
The Great Gatsby everywhere.

I dont have any faith in the Academy anymore.
Leo should have won best Actor. (Matthew was good but Leo was better)
12 Years a Slave is overrated. Frozen was meh.

The plot trigger was ludicrous, I enjoyed it for what it was and it surely was a stunning picture but at the same time during the entire run of the movie I couldn't get over how dumb the entire thing is. Russians shooting down their satellite resulting in the destruction of pretty much every single notable space project of the last 3 decades?

I know the movie wasn't about the plot but holy hell, I just couldn't get this out of my head so I can see how some people might say that.

The movie is dumb because of some irrelevant bullshit? I feel sorry for those of you who get hung up on small things like that.

Jared Leto with an Oscar though. Is that the first time a 'proper' musician has won an acting Oscar?

I guess that depends on how you define proper musician. Do Jennifer Hudson or Jamie Foxx count? I suppose they're purely singers as opposed to musicians, but I thought that was also Leto's role in his band.

I'm sure some would define Cher as a musician. And Russell Crowe is also in a band.

Singers aren't proper musicians now? What?

I know next to nothing about 30 Seconds To Mars but according to Wikipedia he is the singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist for that band. He seems the most musician out of that list of people.

Regardless, still a crazy thing for that dude to get. Totally deserved.

To say Gravity's plot only lacked "complexity" is very generous. :) Technically unrivaled, yes, but it did little else for me. Happy for Cuaron, though. He deserves the recognition.

Not an acting Oscar though. Not that this year was his year for acting, but still! He is my version Leonardo Dicaprio - he should at least have 1 acting Oscar to his name by now.

He weirdly got nominated in 2012 for Moneyball, when i thought his performance in Tree of Life was one of his absolute best.

Going to watch it on the dvr, but in happy to hear Jared Leto won! Little pissed that Leo got snubbed again (I really thought he was going to win it this year).

Some thoughts:

- Every single award that Gravity received was well-earned. Its camera moves will be studied at art colleges in the future, you can count on that. This is truthly a case of technology at the service of the artist

- I am incredibly disappointed that the Wolf of Wall Street didn't earn any award, specially acting-related ones. Leonardo Di Caprio and Johan Hill were incredible, and yet still, the best secondary actor, responsible for the best scene of the movie wasn't nominated. What a shame

- Ok, ok, you all convinced me, I will go watch 12 years a slave, despite its oscar-bait vibes. Let's give this movie the benefit of the doubt

- Ernst & Celestine got robbed. Frozen is a good movie, no doubt, but this is no Tangled. People overlooked the movie's flaws due to its message, I think.

- Now, Let it go won fair and square, even with thought competitors. Best Disney song in the last decade. I am sorry for "Happy", but this is simply the better song

- Gladly surprised to see Gatsby recieving awards

- Best original script for "Her". YES. Sweet, sweet justice. Glad to see that Hollywood is slowly getting away from their sci-fi phobia

Was the show any fun?

Winners are unsurprising mostly.
Yeah I was about to ask the same thing a minute ago.

I have the show recording waiting at home for me, but Ellen is the most off-putting person in the world for me.

I am glad that Leto got it for Dallas Buyers Club, but twelve year slave getting best motion picture is academy being their boring politically correct turds. Disappointed.

Agreed! Although I also thought his performance in Moneyball was great. The fact he didn't win or even get nominated for The Assassination Of Jesse James is one of the Oscar's biggest crimes in my opinion.

Disappointments:

Best actor: loved Mathew in Dallas buyers club, but Bruce dern should have won.
Best Animated Feature: having just seen Frozen on Friday, it should not have won over The Wind Rises. Not even close.

100% agreed. I know Miyazaki usually does get ignored by the Academy, but I really thought they might acknowledge him for what really does look to be his final film. Absolutely shameful.
