An unprecedented bust of two warring street gangs nabbed 87 suspects charged Wednesday with a lethal, nine-year reign of violence and drug-dealing in Bronx housing projects.

A pair of federal indictments identified 120 violent hoodlums targeted in a series of pre-dawn raids by the NYPD and federal agents at the Eastchester Gardens and the nearby Edenwald Houses.

The sweep generated the largest number of busts in a single case in the city’s history as a legion of 700 law enforcers flooded more than 100 spots in the New York City Housing Authority complexes in Williamsbridge.

“F--- you,” screamed a third as he was carted away in handcuffs, while another suspect claimed his innocence.

“I didn’t do it,” he said. “I already did my time. I just got out on parole yesterday. I didn’t do nothing.”

Still another took time to blow kisses toward a young woman who had the misfortune of walking past the precinct as he was escorted to the bus.

Among the charged crimes were five murders, including the 2009 killing of a beloved 92-year-old woman slain by a stray bullet as she watched TV in her two-story home.

Officers and agents used helicopters and armored trucks to round up the suspects described by U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara as ultra-violent and indiscriminate when it came to their victims.

“If you were in the wrong place at the wrong time, you could be shot, stabbed and even killed,” said Bharara.

The brazen gangs recruited new blood via social media, including YouTube clips, and authorities obtained search warrants for 100 Facebook, Instagram and Twitter accounts.

The raids targeted the 2Fly YGZ (Young Gunnerz) and the Big Money Bosses (BMB) — two rival street gangs in the neighborhood.

The indictments identified the suspects by a dizzying array of aliases, from “Money Making Kenny” and “Broadway” to “Mark the Gritty Shark” and “Wayne Brady.”

I can't even fathom all that paperwork.

Edit: 120 charged. Wow.

But did they get the Kingpin?

Gangster Jamal Blair, convicted in the killing of 92-year-old Sadie Mitchell, and reputed BMB kingpin Nico Burrell were arraigned side-by-side in Manhattan Federal Court.

Blair, 24, was brought down from Elmira Correctional Facility, where he was serving 16 1/2 years for his manslaughter conviction. He stood disconsolately, with his head hanging, for nearly the entire hearing.

One of them, allegedly

I find it very hard to believe that all 87 of them are guilty
During the investigation, agents and officers also intercepted thousands of wiretap calls, during many of which various members and associates of the gangs discussed their racketeering and narcotics activities.
Sounds like they got them talking shop on the wire.

A weird casualty during the sweep.

NYT: "Man Wanted for Robbery Plunges to Death During Gang Roundup"
A robbery suspect, apparently under the false impression that law enforcement officers rounding up suspected gang members in the Bronx were actually looking for him, fell from the sixth floor of a building to his death on Wednesday as he tried to hide, the police said.

The man, Geovanni Martin, 21, plunged from a window at 693 East 236th Street in the Wakefield neighborhood, at an apartment building where New York City police officers and United States marshals had executed an arrest warrant for someone else moments earlier, according to the police. Mr. Martin was pronounced dead at Jacobi Medical Center.

The police said Mr. Martin, who was visiting the building, was standing on a front fire escape when the officers and marshals were leaving the building with the suspect, around 5:45 a.m. They ordered Mr. Martin to go inside, and he complied, according to the police. But when the officers went back upstairs, the police said, they found him hanging from a different window ledge at the back of the building, apparently trying to hide. Unable to support himself, he lost his grip and fell to the ground, the police said.

Mr. Martin was not the subject of the warrant, but the police said he was a suspect in five robberies dating back to August in the Bronx on Monterey Avenue, Clinton Avenue and East 183rd Street. The victims were all women who ranged in age from 43 to 62, and were robbed mostly of jewelry and money, the police said.

Some of the language in that article seems racially charged.

Also seems to imply guilt when there hasn't been a trial yet. Other pieces use language such as "alleged" or "charged with".

This goes straight to violent, warring gang member hoodlums.

Then followed by unfavorable quotes and blowing kisses. What?

I'm not familiar with street gangs, but do really only a small percent of them do illegal things? Even discounting dealing drugs only - what about violent crime (like armed assault, battery, etc)?

Look at this response to see that the framing in the article can do!

You are already assuming all of those charged and arrested are in fact gang members.

This pretty much happens a lot in NYS especially in NYC typically for political purposes. A lot of these guys will be guilty by association it's just justice system trying incarcerate a mass group using the doings of a few. My 5% number was probably a little sarcastic probably closer to 50%, but that ranges from petty crime to more something more severe like murder.

edit: I am not defending criminals they deserve to go to jail I just always question mass incarceration like this...I mean why wasn't they arrested when the crime was actually done?

Crazy day. Know some and know of a few others.

I doubt most of their families have bail money on hand, so many will be rotting in Rikers until trial.

Live fast, die fast.

Good riddance, but the systems the allow gangs to exists are bigger issues.

Maybe I am mistaken was this crew really terrorizing the neighborhood?

Depends. In Chicago gang violence is a scourge, with stray bullets killing innocents all the time.

In NYC, it's less "dangerous" but initiation rites like slashing faces have being going up in the city, so while they may not be terrorizing the neighborhood day and night, their presence can be more than a nuisance.

Burden to their own families more so than strangers. However, the killing of that older lady allows them to frame the article in whatever angle they want.

Conspiracy charge is gonna force most of those dudes to plead out.

so you think the other 50% is just there to "hang out"?

They probably worked in the gangs' no-crime divisions.

Why is the the Street Gang Defense Force out in full throat in this thread? I get that the NYPD has a racism problem, but the gangs have a killing innocent people and doing shitty things to their own community problem.

They have to build solid cases. There's a dude across the street from me that sells drugs all the time. He even turns his porch light on when he's in business, the cops know. They're just trying to build a case that doesn't let the dude get out in a month.

All for cleaning the streets up but it'd be nice if we dealt with the reasons why folks join gangs in the first place.

Should deal with the problem there as well. Don't get me wrong I'm all for getting gang bangers the fuck out.

Guilty by association.

Hanging out with people while they are commiting crimes makes you guilty.

Yea of course.

But the earlier point was that they prolly don't have solid cases for each and every dude.

NYPD is locking dudes up for being in pictures with friends who commit crimes, even if you per se, had no involvment.

Well yea, lol.

Everybody in gangs are not shooters and killers. And every gang isnt the bloods and crips.

Hangarounds and prospects (or whatever terms they use for those in NY street gangs) aren't law-abiding citizens, generally speaking.
You don't rise up in the ranks by being a nice guy, these are criminal organizations after all.

Detaining them all at once isn't ideal, of course it isn't, but it's effective and sends a message.
