8BitDo N64 Bluetooth controller review; kind of needs an Analogue 3D

I mean 8BitDo makes a nice controller and while this one works on Windows, Switch and Switch 2 along with MiSTer FPGA...it's 100% positioned for the Analogue 3D which unfortunately has not shipped yet. But I guess a controller useful across multiple platforms for N64 is a good time either way and considering, at least IMO, the N64 trident controller is a hand cramp champ I am more than welcoming of something with a little bit more standard ergonomics.

Some weird analog values on one gate beyond what would be normally expected but some interesting takeaways

I'd love this controller if it had two analog sticks.

That is to say, I miss when analog sticks had an octagonal gate, like on the GameCube. The perfect controller for me would be something like the Pro Controller 2 or Elite 2, but with an octagonal gate on just the left stick.

You're in luck, it's called the 8bitdo Ultimate 2.
Did you read anything past that? The whole reply is that I want is a controller with an octagonal gate on the left analog stick lol. Ultimate 2 doesn't have that.

I stand by my opinion that a proper modern N64 controller either needs to emulate then original shape, or offer 2 analog sticks.
because those would be the only 2 ways to offer proper support for all the iconic first person shooters the N64 has to offer.

I am surprised to hear he doesn't like the dpad tho. is this not using one of their "new" tactile dpads? because those are pretty damn good

Where is the middle handle?

I don't need a middle handle. I always held my N64 controller like this. I have monster hands.

It just doesn't have what I'd consider an A tier tactile feel. But that's really just me. Maybe others will love it. Their D pads just always feel off a bit

their older ones (the non tactile ones) were very meh imo. but their new tactile ones are pretty damn good, and most importantly, very accurate.

it's no Razer Wolverine V3 dpad, but especially for games that need precise cardinal direction inputs, it's great.
I do get that some people vastly prefer smooth rubber dome dpads... as long as it's not as prone to false inputs as the Switch Pro Controller of course.

even so, this controller gave you the option to move the stick with either thumb, the 8Bitdo doesn't.
if you're used to aiming in a shooter with your right thumb, like most people are these days, then the configuration basically all modern N64 controllers use is insufficient.

So here's the thing...if it had an extra stick, this controller would be useful for a much wider variety of games beyond 64, giving you two additional face buttons.

It does the job it intended to do, but, it could have done quite a bit more.

You're right about that. I'd love to have 6 face buttons on an otherwise standard controller. It'd make classic fighting games easier to play, and it would be great for playing Genesis and Saturn games.

I think it's useful to map in modern games too, think Xbox black/white buttons (or N64 lol). Like, at some point I'd hope instead of adding yet another paddle/bumper/trigger, we can add back a few buttons on a deluxe controller lol

Small hands aside...You have a family sized bag of M&M's, a marvel suer heroes cab, and a large sized tub of vicks vapo rub.

Clearly we are related somehow...
lol I knew someone would say something about the m&ms. Honest I don't eat em all at once, I just have terrible chocolate cravings that they help. A family size can last me the week.

No, but it's definitely a good warm up lol Make em satisfied first, and she's more than happy to do the same after

Nice, its a double edged sword really (no pun intended) if you go in with a big banana finger then you might let her conform to that then you have to come at her with a big one to have it seem a noticeable difference. As with all things sex, best not to overthink things though lol.

Thanks for engaging with my obscene conversation sir, have a good night.

Sorry for smutting up your thread VGEsoterica VGEsoterica , love what you do.

Strength...I love me some peanut M&M's but that wouldn't last me the week sadly. The vapo rub either means you are sick...or are into pain :messenger_beaming: .

If you are going to make an N64 controller like this, why not copy the original shape of the N64 controller? Don't their Saturn/SNES controllers look like the actual ones in terms of shape?
Kind of feels like they are just reusing the same mold they already have, but with only the face buttons matching that of the N64.

I love how this has gone completely off the rails haha
Quite right sir (his voice muffled as his mouth is filled with peanut M&M's)!

Got the white controller in today, black ver. should be arriving tomorrow.

I like the feel of the stick, but my hill giant thumbs keep pressing the CLeft and CUp buttons at the same time...will just need to get used to the layout. Likely will only use this for the Analogue 64 when that hits next month (fingers crossed)...but I need to use the Nintendo wireless n64 controller for SOMETHING...it's sitting in the box.

I was happy to see it's arriving next week for me, this surely has to be a good sign that the Analogue 3D will ship in August and hopefully no more delays.

I'm one of those strange people who actually felt the original controller 3 prong set-up was comfortable. Much better use of the controller than the Sega Saturn 3D controller which was terrible.

I think that making a 64 controller like this, that is, like a modern controller without three handles, is the entire point of the controller. People have been complaining about how dumb and wacky it is for decades. If you want the original design, it's already there, so a reproduction doesn't help anybody.

Eh, I disagree. You could say the same thing about NES/SNES/Genesis/Saturn controllers, but they make version of them with the classic design.

I don't think there is anything weird about wanting the same thing for the N64.

There's nothing weird about wanting a legit N64 gamepad. You can already get one, either the original or a new wireless one from Nintendo. And if this were yet another one, that would be great. But there's nothing weird about thinking the extra prong was wacky and dumb either, and by changing the design they are working/cooking on an old problem, which at least makes it more distinct and interesting.

For the record I just use the original OEM controller. If I wanted a new wireless one I would get it from Nintendo. If this had the same shape, it would just be a less good third party version of the same thing, and probably completely invisible to me lol. At least it has some distinct utility of being a N64 option that's...a normal controller. So I was actually more interested in this, though I probably will ultimately not buy it.

Edit: While maybe it would be cool if someone stepped up to make a legit 64 controller, it's such a monstrosity and such a niche that I think 8bitdo settled on releasing the kit instead. Because there are so many shells of 64 pads with bad sticks out there waiting to fulfill this need, and 8bitdo is not going to improve on the original feel of the buttons or anything. I think the stick/wireless upgrade kit was fine.

I got both of mine delivered yesterday. I'm looking forward to giving this a test run with the Analog N64... Shipping at the end of next month... I hope.
