A few dozen Cell Workstations in the hand of key videogame companies

With a few dozen workstations based on the Cell processor now in the hands of key videogame companies, expectations are high. The plan is that the experienced software developers in the videogame market, accustomed to parallel graphics processing, will exploit the multiprocessing Cell design.

Damn, I so want one even if I can't do anything with them. :D

So who can we guess got them?

-Namco
-Konami
-Square-Enix
-Capcom

? I fully expect Ridge Racer VI to be at PS3 launch :D

So how does this fit in with that previously announced PS3 timeline? Does this say anything about possible launch dates? It seems to be around about six months since we first heard of initial xbox2 kits reaching developers..

They announced the workstations for end 2004 and here they are. I would have loved to see a real announcement from Sony with pictures and some numbers, but hey, they never promised something like that and maybe that is planned for later this year when the developers can show first tech demos. Anyway, it looks like they are on their plan for a 2006 release ... like expected.

This is also more evidence that PS3 will release 3-6 months after the US release of Xbox2. If this is the case I don't think there will be any graphical or major power advances between any of the next gen consoles.

Perhaps nothing major, but I think there will be differences. I expect the gap to be around 6 months, which could hand a noticeable difference to one manufacturer over another (6 months can make a BIG difference in PC graphics cards, as an example).

The chance to start a processor design with a clean sheet of paper doesn't come often. But IBM fellow Jim Kahle is getting his shot at revolutionizing the way computing systems work.

If you start something completly new, then the result can be anything from completly underpowered to a revolution in computing. If you develop something further, like what the Xenon team does, then what you sayd is true, but in this case ... much everything can happen.

If they are going to have tech demos at next years E3, Sony should really try to get Team Kojima to put something together for the showing.

Or a Need For Speed Underground 3. NFSU2 would look completely amazing with FFSA and 60fps.

I think PD will show something...Namco too for sure...and of course Capcom. I still remember the old CG Onimusha scans that mind-blowed everybody.
Square perhaps will show some kind of demo but I doubt it...

Good to know. No delay for YOU!

I guess this also means that the unveiling is on track for March as originally intended.

It's going to be interesting to see how the Xbox Next fairs without the major graphics-edge. Hopefully XNA will leverage it a bit with more content, but it might be a bit of a blow.

I wonder if Sony will show something about these workstations before the end of the year as they have hinted in the past.

Next-Gen is going to be the grandaddy of all videogame competition wars! The industry will be bigger than it ever has been and there will not only be bustling current gen sales, but with all the new gear (Handhelds and consoles), the battle for shelf-space and customers' wallets will be UNBELIEVABLE!
