Roman numerals in videogame titles are super annoying.

Do you like Roman numerals?

yeah, but the Mega Man* games then fucked it all up in the main menu. because there they all use Roman numbers.

also don't forget Mortal Kombat X releasing a version called XL 🙃 so Mortal Kombat 40
*except in japan, but in japan the game boy games are world, but given they're from capcpom , not much of a revelaiton there.
now for mk it certainly seems like they attended the microsoft school of counting

All the great games use Roman numerals. Castlevania, Megaman, Street Fighter, Shin Megami Tensei, Dragon Quest, FF, etc. Now excuse me while i play Madden XVVXMCLI

I always though Roman numerals were dumb. Starting at IV being 4 and then it gets hilariously bad later on.

Even the NFL though it was lame to have Super Bowl L.

For me it looks cool and many great games have roman numeral in their titles, but It really depends how big the number is and there are rules and ranges to use it to not look awkward

Ideally, no more that 3 letters, less that 40, because L looks weird, and definately number 30 is a no-no xD

Final Fantasy X looks cooler than Final Fantasy 10, but FF28 is better than FFXXVIII, and FF30...

Don't worry, Lunch. There is a finite limit to Roman numerals where they can no longer be used due to the limited values and mathematical logic behind them.

I like it, and I assume a lot of people understand it considering those numbers are plastered all over religious/royal buildings etc. all over the globe.

It's not like it's something completely foreign.

It's cool up until like XX (and then again at 30 lol)
But if you are making the 20th sequel to something maybe it's time to move on ?

Op nightmare watch, also op must be american

"What time are we meeting at the park ?"

"China's president o'clock, or something"

Nah I like them when it matches medieval or high fantasy based titles… but FF for example varies greatly whereas GTA doesnt

It depends on the title ofc, but I think Romans.

The best part is that, when you reach your 10th installment, you can call it: GAME X

Learn how to read lol.

Imagine not knowing instinctively that VI is 6

I don't read roman numerals instinctively above III. Maybe it belongs in the gaming confessions thread. Or is it life confessions?

Like when I see GTA VI I don't see 6. I see "GTA hold on, that's five PLUS one... alright cool, just checking yeah it's 6".

Of course this means clocks would take much more friction to read having to think about what all the numbers are first, if they were not all in the right place and you could just refer to a clock as a roman numeral guide. Although you would first need to know how to read a clock for this to work.

The clocks that annoy me are the ones that skip numerals entirely and expect me get by on some hyphens! Dude if I look at a clock its because it's ticking, I don't need it patronizing me with mental side quests!

Why the frick does half of all games use Roman numerals in their sequels? It doesn't look any cooler and it just confuses people.

For example, something like GTA VI is nonsense . And none of these games actually has a Roman setting.

So it literally has no reason to use numerals except for that some lunatic in marketing thinks it looks cooler if they use a bunch of x's and v's instead of a normal number that people know how to read.
Zoomers are wild.

I agree with OP. Roman Numerals serve no purpose except pretentiousness. "ooh look at me, i write numbers like XILVXXVVII or whatever the fuck, i must be so smart and cultured."

No, you are not. There is nothing inherently intellectual about deliberately obscuring something. Quite the opposite.

And to everyone who's saying "jUsT lEaRn tO rEaD", If roman numerals are so great, try using them in calculus or geometry or engineering, or heck, even simple cooking recipes, and see what happens. There is a specific reason they were replaced by the entire educated world. They are not at all intuitive or instinctive.
