hmm, PSP has been out for only 4 months and has already overtaken the DS in software sales. Pretty crazy. You'd think the PSP is already dead considering how many GAF members consider it doomed
 
I think that many N-fans will be forced to reconsider PSP's position by the end of the year as it inevitably becomes the top selling handheld in two contries out of three ;) :P
 
3rd party games also seem to be selling better on the PSP than the DS. There are 10 (11 if you count Sony Online) 3rd party titles on the PSP that have sold over 100K, versus only 4 for the DS.

This isn't the best way to go about this, wario. I think there's very few really proclaiming complete doom for the PSP but certainly more than a few gleefully running with the fact that there were some vocal PSP supporters around here that were wrong about their early predictions that the PSP would quickly decimate Nintendo's handheld dynasty. Balance these US sales figures against the Japanese sales figures and the fact that the PSP hasn't even launched yet in Europe and the picture of longterm PSP viability is far from complete, but I don't think any but the most loyalist of corporate shills around here are predicting doom.
 
Man, I just don't know what to think...

The GAF makes it seem as if the DS is home to hundreds of classics already while the PSP has absolutely nothing at all worth playing. The GAF would also lead you to believe that the DS is crushing the PSP at retail.

Then I see lists like this...and remember that all of those people could be acting like Zeo. That DS list is just so unappealing to me. It seems that all DS popularity is the result of its solid JP lineup.

I was nearly convinced that the PSP was dead, but I don't know. I hope they both do well, but the GAF really f*cking hates the PSP. :(

You mean saying the PSP has good games out, is a good system, but has the opinion that there's very little worthwhile coming out for it and the upcoming DS lineup is a lot better?

Nope. Wario did go about it the right way. Just take a look in every PSP thread and you'll see the same ol' shit about there being no games to play on the PSP. If it takes this thread to shove it back in their faces, then it is A-ok by me. I personally don't have anything against Nintendo or some of the more reasonable fans, but there are way too many N-tards making ridiculous statements on the board.

No, I witnessed you praising games that range from terrible to average in other threads. It made me wonder whether people were actually praising great games...or just pushing mediocre titles as something more than they are.

The upcoming DS lineup IS looking good. Sadly, very few of those games really appeal to me. Currently, I think the US DS lineup is actually pretty poor. After this holiday, I certainly wouldn't say that ("solid" would be appropriate)...but at the same time, I'm disappointed that there are few games on the way I want to play.

The problem is alot of GAFers like japanese games. The PSP is doing fine here, but not so hot in japan. I don't know about anyone else, but I didn't buy my PSP for a bunch of EA ports (except burnout and SSX^^) Its very possible for a platform to be succesfull without japan support (see xbox) but quite franky thats is not the kind of library I want.
 
NOA sure squandered their 5 month head start - that's for sure. Of course - waiting and launching alongside the PSP and the Sony Hype Machine wouldn't have been a very good idea either.

Let's be honest here...

When I say "haven't read much up on", that probably means that I haven't been focused on it. That's about it. I know much more about the system than you'd probably imagine. I wanted to hear honest opinions from a variety of people. The only thing I feel that I may be lacking info on is some of the more obscure Japanese titles. I haven't read much on games like Goemon, for example, and want to know more.

I have played a number of games on the machine, but I do not have experience with a large portion of them. In that sense, I am acting like cybamerc and Lazy8s in that I am commenting on games that I have only read about. They constantly droll on about things they've never even witnessed in person, so I am ashamed to admit I've done that with SOME DS content. I've played most of the games that interest me, though, as well as a few just for shits so it's not as if I am speaking based ONLY upon what I've read.

Believe it or not, I am planning on picking up a DS. $150 is dirt cheap, and hell, it's going to become even cheaper shortly. I won't feel any remorse about picking it up for so little. I'm buying the system for Castlevania. There are a handful of other titles that I'd like to play alongside that.

When I refer to disappointment in "big" games, I'm talking about stuff like Mario Kart, Nintendogs, Animal Crossing, and the like. Those games do nothing for me, but they are receiving lots of attention and will be considered "great games". I won't deny that, but that doesn't mean I can enjoy them. I have an open mind in regards to most games, but those don't appeal to me (from a gameplay point of view) and my distaste for some of those themes only brings that interest down another notch. I'm excited about an actual Mario platformer, for example, but I don't care for the "Mario" franchise (from a character perspective) so a lot of related games do not interest me.

I do not actually hate the DS at all (nor any system), but I do find a lot of its hardcore fans to be extremely annoying as of late. Perhaps my opposite opinion is only encouraging more, but that's part of the GAF. I just want to make it clear that I'm not taking a completely negative stance against the machine and that I do have interest in its lineup. You'll never convince me that the current lineup is anything besides ass, though (save for Kirby and Meteos). :P
 
Well, the Dogs come out in less than a week.

Ninty fans will be chewing on that bone for a while.

Didn't note that, nice catch. :)

Also, if you'll all notice, it looks like the lower bound on PSP software sales is around the 50k mark (with some outliers) but the DS has over half its library under that sales figure.

Very rough estimates with horrible rounding, but--

DS averages 120k sales per game
PSP averages 130k sales per game.

Oh man. I can see right now if Blizzard really does decide to port StarCraft or Diablo to DS and PSP doesn't get a version, it's gonna be the DS Castlevania thread all over again.

Who's talking about sales charts? I'm talking about GAF mentality.

I'm pointing out the simliarites between the Castlevania DS thread/situation and the Blizzard/Starcraft DS thread/situation. The original thread about the Blizzard poll was much the same as the Castlevania DS thread. Four pages of complaining.

Sure. Starcraft on handhelds wouldn't blaze up the sales charts, but that still didn't stop people from whining about it when it was mentioned that the Blizzard poll didn't mention it as a possibility for PSP.

July - 71,970 per week

The PSP SW sales were pretty even (-2.6%) while the DS SW sales was the one that took a big dive (-18.5%).
 
Wasn't the original article about the post honeymoon drop in enthusiasm for PSP?
The fact that it was championed as something incredible and turned out to just be a pretty cool multimedia device (not saying that's a bad thing). Not that it was doomed or in a sales slump.

I'm actually pretty impressed with what titles are selling the most on the PSP. For the most part anyway. Fuckin Need for Speed Rivals or whatever shouldn't be the best selling game.

EDIT: Ughh Spiderman 2 is the second best selling DS game? Jesus fuckin ass fuck, what the hell? Mariokart needs to come out and fast.

It's because it was a launch title (242,228 in the first two months). Don't worry, WW:Touched might pass it next month.
 
Great sales does not always == good software. Think EA.

And no, I am not trolling the PSP here, I think generally speaking. And the PSP has some good games.
 
The difference between the handheld war in the U.S. and Japan is that there's more hope for the DS in the US than PSP in Japan. The PSP in Japan looks stagnant, but the DS still has a ton of potential with its lineup and Pokemon Diamond and Pearl (if Emerald is any indication). Hold off people; let's wait things out.

I think it's FAR too early to declare either system hopeless in any region. They've been out less than a year and both have had their share of problems, but they should both be around for a few years. Certainly the PSP will be, and I think Nintendo will continue to support the DS even when they announce the GBA Next.

It will be interesting to see if the relative success has convinced publishers to loosen the purse strings and aggressively go after this market or if they'll be content to go for low budget titles and quick ports.

That's really something that can't be said at the moment.Both the platforms have less than a year of life,the real show has yet to take place.
PSP is still selling 20k a week (which is absolutely respectable) with no important releases.Let's see what happens in September with the white model,Winning Eleven,the FF7 UMD and Gundam.
Of course Sony has really to work on the lineup there.
 
Nice software sales all around for PSP. You already know 3rd parties who aren't on the PSP bandwagon have seen these numbers and have gone, "Damn! We should have had a title or two out by now.".

The problem Nintendo fans have is portable gaming is like their last stand. They always could use it as a fallback excuse when Gamecube gets trounced. Nintendo can't even make a tiny dent into Sonys console market, and now the PSP is starting to entrench itself as the portable platform of choice in North America. I have no doubt it will happen in Europe too since it is Sony's biggest stronghold. Sony is changing the rules to portable gaming. I fully embrace this change. Heck, it may become a situation where PSP dominates in Europe (80/20 share versus DS), does marginally better in NA (60/40 versus DS) and trails slightly in Japan (60/40 pro DS). This would still be a momentous shift in portable gaming. The bad news for Nintendo is that this is a very expensive portable gaming system which is eating into their mindshare. Wait till prices drop. Yeah, the half truth is that most people said the PSP was going to mop the floor with the DS. But this was before what we knew the PSP price. Once a $250 portable system price was announced with 40 to 50 dollar games it seemed like everything swung and the majority opinion was that the PSP was screwed.

Judging by the fact that there were 14 GBA games in the US top 50 as opposed to only 2 psp games and 2 DS games I'm guessing publishers are very much gonna go for low budgets on both the DS and psp(and the GBA too of course). The psp will thus continue to get lots of ports(but with some strong efforts from Sony as a 1st party) as well as some lower budget original stuff like Mercury and the DS will get lots of low budget games some of which are ports but some of which are good original games that stand on their own(Sonic, Castlevania, Mario etc).

Regarding the DS vs psp fight I think it will vary publisher by publisher. I think Activision and Ubisoft will favour the DS and EA and Take Two will favour the psp. But generally, I think larger western publishers will favour the psp, especially European publishers like Codemasters. The Japanese publishers I think surprise surprise are very much going to favour the DS going forward. One place where I think the DS will have the upper hand is with smaller developers/publishers which I think will continue to support the DS and GBA.

Pretty sure the majority of doom bringers (myself included) have the stance that the PSP is dead or on life support in JP only. The PSP is thriving in the west which shouldn't be much of a surprise since if you look at that sales chart most of the dev teams from those games are from here.

Personally when i think of Sony consoles i think 50/50 in terms of JP/US dev support which is a perfect mix for me. I'll be jumping off the PSP bandwagon once that table leans heavy to the US side which i'm imagining it will eventually.
