Poe's 'Legeia', which is one of his lesser known stories, had me enthralled. 'The Cask of Amontillado' is legendary, it's an amazing short story, one of my favorites. I'm a huge Poe fan, so I recommend mostly anything from him, of course, 'Fall of the House of Usher', 'The Raven' and 'Mask of the Red Death' are probably his most famous works, all masterfully written. His ability to create atmosphere and tension is rediculous. Kate Chopin's 'The Awakening' is an excellently written romantic tragedy, and when I say romantic I mean in the genre of writting, not a romance novel. It's a great read, she sets mood and atmosphere very well, and I'm not a big fan of Chopin at all, but I appreciate her ability to create a life-like environment for her well developed characters.
For this assignment you can find a grip of stuff on Poe and Chopin, Poe is probably one of the most analized authors every, and Chopin is touted as a pioneer of the women's movement. You can probably find alot of stuff on Anton Checkov, who wrote 'The Woman With the Dog' another romantic short story dealing with an affair, which is not something that I usually care to read about, but again, it's a well written story that's able to capture mood and emotions of the main character as he stuggles with internal things.
