A polite discourse amongst friends on the importance of MP-elements in No Man's Sky

Another tell-tale sign that there is no multiplayer functionality was how the planetary time was clearly different for the two players (i.e. day time for one and evening time for the other). Considering how the day/night cycle can affect conditions on the planet, it would seem to me that a proper multiplayer experience would require time synchronization.

This was known long ago for anyone savvy enough to read through Sean's vague and misleading answers regarding certain aspects of this game.

You're right. The point is, there's still a ton we don't know and the sole test case we have for this is not exactly in 100% "lab" conditions where everything is optimal. It's way too early to start making definitive statements as to whether this is possible or not.

You know who can make a definitive statement? The developer. But they've chosen to describe probabilities rather than how this works.

This thread is amazing, it's disappointing if I can never see anyone but you people need to give them time to respond this literally broke within the last couple of hours, it's not going to be resolved or commented on instantly, at least give it time before you hang everyone involved in making the game.

You'd think this was some sort of life and death scenario the way people are reacting.

How hard would it be to tweet that "yeah, it's possible to find someone. It's just a bug. We're working on it." I mean, the devs should probably know the features in their game, right? They don't have to explain the technical aspects of it if it's launch day issues or something.

On the other hand, if they were bullshitting and just got caught way faster than expected, I can imagine it taking them some time to come up with a deflection to try and escape the negativity without admitting fault.

Still, I'm not sure why people should give an entity focused on maximizing profit the benefit of the doubt. People can, and should, raise the question and indicate their displeasure, but in a reasonable and adult fashion. Bombing his Twitter with "fuk you, lier!!!" isn't what people should be doing, obviously.

Honestly, I don't mind if you can't see other players. That's fine, it's a single player game anyway and I can deal with it. But the thing that upsets me is this vague communication about it, this ambiguous "Yes, there's multiplayer" one day and the next "I mean, it's not really multiplayer." the other. I get they want to keep some things under wraps but frankly it's just really annoying and a bad move in general.

I read on reddit updates that they later logged out, made sure all settings were good, re-logged in and met up at the same time and still no sight of the other person.

I find the subject line of this PlayStation email I just got an amusing coincidence, given the discourse in this thread ;-)

How would a huge bug stop them from saying if the game has it or not? I mean, if the huge bug disables multiplayer, they can simply come out and state so.

It's fine to ask people to wait, normally, but Sean hasn't been exactly upfront about this issue. I think he's had quite a bit of time to clarify pre-launch.

And while you might think it's minor, other people love the idea. No need to downplay this for others.

From trailers, gameplay there has been nothing shown of multiplayer. If you loved the idea of multiplayer then you should of waited to see how it pans out and if it gets added or implemented properly post-release. People in this thread are going nuts because two guys who happened to meet up and stream it at the same time didn't couldn't see each other. How does that even happen anyway?! When there has been no advertising for multiplayer from the get go. Yes Sean has said it's possible but he hasn't told anyone how. It could be that you have to stay in the same spot and quit and jump back in until you're in the same instance?!?! Or hell maybe there is a certain item you need that allows it?! Again like I said earlier who knows at this point and throwing insults and calling people liars when you don't have all the facts just makes you look like an entitled nob.

Seriously. What is going on with people here? Why does NMS specifically elicit this reaction amongst so many of you all?

Right, and it still appeared as different times of day on the planet, so there's clearly no connectivity going on.

Imagine playing Minecraft with someone else wherein for one person it's nighttime and the monsters are out while for the other person it's day time, even though they are in the same place. It just wouldn't work properly.

It's like Shean actually thought people wasn't going to try this out, or by the time they did, they already got our money.

It was known to anyone who thought about the stupidity of imlpementing multiplayer in a game where you're exceedingly unlikely to encounter other players.

This is one of my biggest problems with any industry. We have things like Twitter where every thing has an account, your toilet roll brand, a single game, everything has a Twitter and can communicate to fans of said product whenever about whatever yet whenever there is some kind of problem they rarely ever directly just say "this is what is up". Like the stuff with Niantic and Pokémon Go where there were a lot of issues and uncertainty about features and instead of answering anything they just didn't say anything until they had a panel where they just gave a bunch of non-answers and said "yeah, we don't like those things people made that do the job of that feature we had and removed and showed off in a trailer and we're not going to give any hint to our plans with anything".

How hard is it to just say, straight, "Yeah, you should be able to see another player but it's not working because of server issues, we hope to get it fixed soon". or "There is no multiplayer. You can not see another player even if you are at the same place on the same planet".

Yah man. I should've just thought about the feasibility of it rather than listen to what the Dev's were saying.

I'm sure you'll get an answer soon enough. Maybe they want to look in to it first before saying anything.

Not giving them benefit of the doubt either just being a normal person not expecting an instant response to every question I have on the internet.

People have raised the question now wait on a response like a normal person, it's past midnight in the UK so you'll be waiting until tomorrow most likely, imagine having to wait a whole day. Horrifying.

I'm not into the vitriol going around but you can't be this naive lol

Yeah sure, multiplayer might be in the game, it's just a secret! Ain't that convenient

This game is bringing out the absolute worst in the gaming community.

So much whining, so much nitpicking, so little enjoying the wonderful game that's ACTUALLY OUT right now.

Here I was hoping most of those crybabies were only on Reddit...

In future we should ignore what a developer claims is in their game then?

I keep seeing people saying how "it was clear to anyone who read between the lines/thought of feasiblity/yada yada yada"

I don't know about other but to me it's irrelevant. Even if developers lying and being misleading is obvious and everybody knows it, that doesn't excuse it. A wrongdoing does not stop being a wrongdoing simply because everybody "is supposed to see through it".

I know right? Who cares about what developer says about their game. How dare we have some sort of standard regarding companies lying to us about features of their product. While we at it, let's ditch the "false advertisement" laws too. Who cares that tobbacco companies now claim on their packets that smoking actually cures lung cancer, we all should just enjoy a nice smoke, right?

concerns about a dev lying for months = whining

Okay

Indeed, that alone is the first obvious clue. But many times when Sean was asked the question during interview, he skirted around the subject and left people with the impression that it may be possible.

The gif with the example of them explicitly stating that it you "can play with your friends" has been posted at least 3 times just on THIS PAGE. But here you, go, since you are obviously special and everybody needs to repeat everything for you personally:

murray2e0up8.gif
Wow, dat gif doe. LOL.

Isn't that the interview that he said you can see other players and kill each other too?

It's like Shean actually thought people wasn't going to try this out, or by the time they did, they already got our money.
Like you bought this game lol. If you did it was only to find ammo for gaf.

I don't think these guys are doing anything nefarious.

Perhaps it's a tech problem.

It seems like quite a few people are doing so, but that still doesn't absolve them of their communication problems.

People in this thread are going nuts because two guys who happened to meet up and stream it at the same time didn't couldn't see each other. How does that even happen anyway?!

Fair point. The message has been lost between a defense force and shitposters. But let's not pretend like there aren't rational people who are just curious as to where the multiplayer is at, regardless of what side they are on.

When there has been no advertising for multiplayer from the get go. Yes Sean has said it's possible but he hasn't told anyone how. That does make people look like nobs. It also makes people look like nobs when they aren't allowed to level any sort of level-minded criticisms on the lack of communications. Developers do it all the time, especially when either their marketing or the the gaming community has muddied the message. And a simple "yes" or "no" is all that's necessary at this point.

Considering the amount of time and effort it takes to code multiplayer systems for procedural games, I was always suspect this was a thing. I assumed at most you could see eachother but not interact in any way with eachothers worlds.

If that other player is really in offline mode, day-night differences make sense. It probably needs to sync with server time.

Blind devotion is just as bad.

I said that as an example. Just like I said it could be a server issue as an example.

Jesus the whole point I was trying to make is it could be a multitude of reasons why it isn't working. And that they will probably say something about it soon.

Yeah he could of lied. But let's wait and hear what he has to say aye? Innocent until proven guilty and all that?

If he turns round and says yeah sorry we had to cut it out the game, then fair enough I can an understand people getting annoyed.

as someone who watched sean murray be overly vague about the game and refuse to directly tell people what it is and isnt, it was obvious there would be some kind of backlash on release.

and here it is

If they completely jettisoned the "see other players" feature without telling anyone about it until after the game launched, it's in extremely poor form and Murray and co. should be raked over the coals for it.

However, there's no confirmation either way, and it's silly to start taking up that attitude before you even know what's going on.

The thing about these kind of issues is if they were just up front about it and said "no visible player models but you can see other people's named objects and creatures" nobody would care.

NOBODY would care.

It's not about the lack of the feature it's about the lying. A game like this with such lofty aspirations and out there concept they can't afford to misrepresent it.

Genuine question for those who are disappointed by the lack of it. What would that one off fleeting 30 seconds to a minute experience of meeting another player add to the game that it's absence renders the game pointless now to some?

The games universe is so big that it would be extremely rare for it to happen by chance. The game isn't even something that would benefit much from MP since the whole idea is to gather resources and explore your way, at your pace. I'm not trying to offend here, just genuinely curious how it would have made such an impact in the first place.

You could kill them and take their stuff?

I never got the sense that this was multiplayer. There is no party system and the world is massive. Seems like a lot of state to deal with.

It's been bringing out the worst. People on both sides feel they are on some damn crusade against this game. From the death threats to Jason and Sean regarding the delay. To warriors constantly at every turn trying to downplay and shit on this game. It's crazy. You don't see this sort of reaction to COD, Madden, 2k, but a small indie game with amazing potential brings out the absolute dregs of the gaming community. Sickening really.
