A polite discourse amongst friends on the importance of MP-elements in No Man's Sky

well..

I think It is pretty obvious there is no networking/multiplayer code
You cant see other people because there is no multiplayer feature.

This is a singleplayer game with a shared dictionary

Kind of like you cant see other players in Metroid Prime even if you are playing the same boss.

🤔

CONFIRMATION: It is NOT possible

https://youtu.be/1ORFgfhj_hM?t=158

The way in which he answers this question is extremely frustrating, but it is clear, you will never be able to 'see' another player in game. Only traces or hints that other players are there. Maybe put that clip in the OP?

It seems obvious to me that they had some PR/Marketing rep telling them constantly to never come out and just say "No, you will never see a player model in the game."

If you listen he says it is possible. He says the game isn't some FPS or MMO as in you aren't matching up with other players or arranging to meet at the city to go take on a raid. He's saying most of the "multiplayer" stuff is passive, seeing other peoples named planets and animals and plants etc. He then goes on to say that two people being on th esame planet is super rare but said it would be possible, he even cites Journey and Dark Souls (which is what most people expected). People didn't expect some sort of Summoning or deathmatch, but being able to see other players on the same planet/station/sector and seeing them go about their business and even just follow them around.

I'm mostly surprised that people in this thread legitimately thought NMS would be an MMO. I don't care what Sean Murray said implied.
I think we're past the point of stating that it was merely "implications" at this point don't you think?

A big portion of GAF has always loved to hate on indie games. So this was kinda expected to how big of an indie release it is.

Indie-hating Gaf just offscreen with a gun forcing him to unambiguously state there would be multiplayer. Truly shameful.

I'm just talking about the concept of it being a lie or not. Like i mentioned, of course if things changes, people have (or at least should) to notify about this if they can.

A second example of lying by omission, is it lying? You're involved with someone, you both want children. Maybe that changes for you at some point and you decide you don't, should you tell them before marriage? If you don't tell them, are you doing harm? I mean, how much would kids have really mattered in the relationship anyways, a bunch of people out there don't want them, so it's not a big deal, right?

The emotional investment is clearly much stronger in people who are angry about the game. It's been shameful to witness.

I could care less about the game, but people have a right to be concerned/upset. Even from my limited following of the game through hearing about it on podcasts and seeing bits here and there, even I was under the impression that you could run into other people even if the odds are ultra thin. How they didn't seem to account for people wanting to explore with a friend and plan to link up is beyond me. They clearly went out of their way to let people believe contact with others is possible.

If this proves to be not possible, people have every right to be upset as they were lied to repeatedly.

Even when being shown literal examples of developers claiming otherwise, defence force still just closes their eyes and ears and goes "lalalala, can't hear you".

Typical -_-

If you can't tell the difference in "Server issues suck. I'm mad about the servers not working" and "The developer is a liar and should be ashamed" I don't know what to tell you.

Tell me you have a proof that the two players didn't see each other because of a server issue. Otherwise, the appeals to calm are as baseless as any other theories.

My guess is this only affects PS4 players, since the PS4 can probably barely handle the game at all. On Friday we'll play the real No Man's Sky.

Even though there is a quote feature on this forum, people enjoy vagueposting because they don't have to engage in actual discussion and instead make hit-and-run posts.

I don't. Which is why I'm saying we should wait and not call the developers liars. There are completely reasonable explanations that a player wouldn't see another player on launch day.

Hey, if they're silent tomorrow and we get more evidence, I'm right there with you.

Agree.

He's been tweeting tonight of server issues. He could have clarified the whole "MP" situation in one of those tweets.

I hope he does so soon.

Based on the drama surrounding the game for the past week,, I really don't want to know how his twitter looks like right now.

Has there ever been a fanbase that insane for a new ip?

How?

Until we get more confirmation that this isn't server issues or the developer temporarily turning off the feature (or that a patch broke the feature), or any other reason, I don't see how anyone can call the developers liars or misleading.

You just have people who want the game to fail going "lol fukin liars" and fanboys going "but it doesnt matter" with a smattering of people actually doing the reasonable thing and waiting for more information.

Why would the devs ever address it if nobody was calling them out on it and threads like this didnt exist. The chances are so slim to run into somebody they could have been hoping this issue never presented itself...The devs have been vague and misleading imo....additionally to all those claiming the universe is "soo big it would never happen"....isnt every player heading to the same center of the universe? If there is only one center isnt it inevitable that they all end up in what is essentiallythe same spot? As somebody whos still looking forward to experiencing the single player aspects of this game eventually, im still extremely dissapointed the devs have been so unclear.

I have a feeling they never outright clarified that you can't meet other players because it's something they wanted to implement. However due to already being delayed they had to meet this deadline and never got around to getting it into the game. Or the technical hurdles were just too imposing.

But you're right, we should wait until Sean gives a statement before the witch hunt starts. I think people have just been hyped up for so long and are passionate about this game.

Because they may have found a huge bug in the system due to the load and they don't want to say anything until they've worked out what has happened? Who knows.

Either way why can't we all just be patient and wait for a response from him rather than going batshit crazy. Its a minor feature of the game that isn't even represented on the back of the box. Whether he said you could or not before hand.

How would a huge bug stop them from saying if the game has it or not? I mean, if the huge bug disables multiplayer, they can simply come out and state so.

It's fine to ask people to wait, normally, but Sean hasn't been exactly upfront about this issue. I think he's had quite a bit of time to clarify pre-launch.

And while you might think it's minor, other people love the idea. No need to downplay this for others.

This thread is amazing, it's disappointing if I can never see anyone but you people need to give them time to respond this literally broke within the last couple of hours, it's not going to be resolved or commented on instantly, at least give it time before you hang everyone involved in making the game.

You'd think this was some sort of life and death scenario the way people are reacting.

Maybe, and bear with me here because this is a wild idea.

Maybe, just maybe, Sean could have some stones and just come out with a clear confirmation about how it works (or rather doesn't work) and be done with the situation.

I know asking for honesty from someone who is happy to speak in vagueness is a crazy leap, but it's one I'm willing to make.

Ohhhh but the mystery though. They don't give us all the information so that we're not spoiled.

Isn't it great that the game is so mysterious? You might be able to meet other players, you might not! Play it and find out!

When they're thinking when staring at their social media feeds: Bloody hell, should have just stuck to Joe Danger 3.

On my general position, I am not particularly angry as I am not getting NMS anytime soon, so it's not like I'm being lied to now that I already parted with my money. But i have very short patience for any kind of misleading advertisement and stuff like this, and being everybody's indie darling should not excuse HG. Everybody should fall under the same scrutiny.

And yeah, sure,MAYBE, it's a server issue, guess what, you can tweet that in like 3 minutes, if it's the case, you don't need to put togethere an official statement.

I don't understand why they dont just say yes you can see other fucking players or no you cannot this shady shit really bothers me. After this I'm gonna go ahead and say it was a saying just to generate more hype about how "big" the game is and now the truth came out that you really can't see others at all.

The two Twitch streamers are going to try again at 9 PM EST, but my guess is the result won't be any different.

Like someone else said, this appears to be a single player game where the only online functionality is pulling the names of planets and systems from a database.

The way I see it he either lied and there really isn't any kiond of player to player interactions and all the "multiplayer" is just naming stuff, seeing other peoples names, maybe even influencing the galactic stock market for certain sectors?

OR

It's there and just because of server load or network issues (local or server based) the two players could never connect because there were connection issues. It definitely could be this with the tweets from Sean regarding servers and player amounts and so on and the fact that one of the two guys connection to the NMS servers seemed to be constantly up and down.

We won't know until either someone connects with someone else in the future or Sean actually says some confirmation one way or the other on how the multiplayer works and why it didn't work for those two.

Werent they twitch streaming? In chat together....and visited multiple locations at the same time trying to find eachother?

Yeah, but one guy kept dropping connection to the NMS servers (not PSN, not Twitch, not the chat call to the other guy).

Well, i said two times that if things doesnt go as planned, its of course important to notify people about this. Is there anything not clear about that? Hope i'm not sounding rude because thats not my intention, just curious if there was anything unclear about what i said. But yes, if a relationship is built on the premise of having children, and one of the parties change their opinion on this, i think it should be told. Doesnt mean that the party was lying e.g a few years ago when it was first said.

I don't care if it's resolved. I just want them to clarify what they should have clarified months ago. Say exactly how multiplayer works in No uncertain terms. None of the vague mystery bs.

I didn't watch the streams, but did they try adding each other to their respective friends' lists?

This is a bit disappointing, if true, but it wouldn't surprise me if at a later date you could at least see your friend represented, even if just a framey ghost.

Yet it fell right into the .01% ratio. ;)

Thank you.

Why can't people get this? It is completely random for the off chance it ever happens, lol. You can't coordinate with specific people, you just may randomly stumble on it, when the instance allows it to happen.

I cant remember the last time a game make this kind of buzz. People are trying to bring this game down, jumping to their own conclusions about how the game works. People still don't get it, that the game have some mystery and unknown mechanics.

And the creator said that is like a 1% change of meeting another player RANDOMLY in a vast universe and in less of 24 hours you people already beat chances?

Yeah, no.

People must just chill and play the game.

Save us Modders, you're our only hope.

Seriously disappointed if this is true. Was looking forward to maybe, possibly, not very likely finding someone and having a date in space.

They are there. They are just in a different instance so you can't see them.

I wish more games didn't allow you to see other players.

But seriously though, I couldn't care less, although it might have been cool to see someone else on the same planet and you could decide whether to kill them and grab their resources or follow each other and take on hostile creatures.

OMG you're such a defense force. Just admit that you're wrong and I'm right even though I have no proof.

Was always under the impression that it was a journey-like system.
That's because Sean compared NMS' mp to journey's.

I don't see why it's so hard for the Devs to just come up and clarify.

We need a'body language expert asap. You see when he looked down after saying yes. That implies he is lying and he just had a Coke and hotdog for lunch. Hes Guilty.

Doesn't prove anything. He was also connected and in the same spot with the other player for some time. Maybe you need to spend a real day and night there to leave a mark.

You're right. The point is, there's still a ton we don't know and the sole test case we have for this is not exactly in 100% "lab" conditions where everything is optimal. It's way too early to start making definitive statements as to whether this is possible or not.

I think Murray secretly developed LA Noire 2 under our noses this whole time.

That crafty bastard

If you can't tell the difference in "Server issues suck. I'm mad about the servers not working" and "The developer is a liar and should be ashamed" I don't know what to tell you.

Well I mean,

Game 1: online multiplayer game that they said would be online and showed footage of it being online and had a beta with people playing online and such. Day one, nobody can play online because the servers are hammered.

Is there any question whether the game was planned to have online multiplayer at all?

Game 2: devs say it's online multiplayer. Kinda. Well maybe not really, maybe there's very little chance of meeting people. And they're a small studio and might not have the funds and manpower to build something like that, but nonetheless they keep hinting that it's online. But there's never any footage of it or clear discussion of how it really might work, and nobody gets to see what online might look like prior to launch. Game is listed as a single player game on Steam and back of the box. Does not require PS+ to play. Day one, players meet up and can't see each other.

At some level, you gotta stop the mysterious stuff and tell the consumer what the product has in store. Even a small confirmation would work.
