concerns about a dev lying for months = whining

Okay
'concerns'
'lying'

Right, and it still appeared as different times of day on the planet, so there's clearly no connectivity going on.

Imagine playing Minecraft with someone else wherein for one person it's nighttime and the monsters are out while for the other person it's day time, even though they are in the same place. It just wouldn't work properly.
At FIRST they were at different times of the day, but through a series of logging in/relogging in, they both ended up there at night. They're trying everything they can... and will continue tonight. From Reddit:

Reddit said:
Just an update, as somebody who has been watching this stream from the beginning

both players can be found here:

http://multitwitch.tv/psytokat/thesadcactus

They have met up a few times in both the space station and on the planet - as in, they are both in the same exact spot, trying to manipulate the environment, etc - they cannot see each other, nor the changes, nor the ships

Further, it doesn't even look like the game even syncs up time, since one player is in that spot and its day time, and for the other it's night time

Conclusion so far: At this moment they have done a whole lot to try to prove that multiplayer exists now that the "it will be next to impossible to find each other" limitation is now a NON ISSUE , but so far it looks like even the illusion of "somebody being there" doesn't exist

5:20PM : Both players are relogging in the same exact spot to see if they end up "in the same lobby" (if thats a thing). It looks like at this point one player has revealed he does not have PS plus, (not PSN) however ign reports neither are required. So that player is signing up

5:28PM : Both players now have PS Plus - and are relogging. It seems that one player now has a bug where its showing him disconnected from online services- so they are trying to fix that

5:35: Online activated on both games - both have relogged, time looks be synced up so they see the same planet/time of day (correction: they just both eventually happened to see night time together due to all the relogging) - still no indication of them seeing each other - or seeing each other's planet destruction. We are back to square one

Both players will be back streaming and retrying at 9PM est

Edit 2: For those wondering "WHY U MAD?

All that to say, however this turns out, it's been interesting watching this unfold.

It's been bringing out the worst. People on both sides feel they are on some damn crusade against this game. From the death threats to Jason and Sean regarding the delay. To warriors constantly at every turn trying to downplay and shit on this game. It's crazy. You don't see this sort of reaction to COD, Madden, 2k, but a small indie game with amazing potential brings out the absolute dregs of the gaming community. Sickening really.

Can't even have an actual rational discussion because both sides are just flinging shit.

There were actual death threats? What on earth...

Is there any way to plant a flag (or equivalent) to show where you've been? Would be amazing to land on a planet a find a flag that someone has left. But would also be amazing knowing you could actually meet others too, no matter how unlikely. A living breathing alternate gigantic universe you are sharing with real people.

This game is bringing out the absolute worst in the gaming community.

So much whining, so much nitpicking, so little enjoying the wonderful game that's ACTUALLY OUT right now.

Here I was hoping most of those crybabies were only on Reddit...
And here I thought we used NeoGAF to dissect games and have meaningful conversations about them while enjoying them.

Apparently they're mutually exclusive though? Thanks for the update mod!

So can anyone who is calling him a liar confirm that maybe it isnt something that comes in late game?

For example, if this game is dependent on what instance your in, maybe the likelihood of seeing someone greatly improves the closer you get to the center? Since the number of planets to visit should ( I would think) be radically less than just starting out.

People need to remember how whiny this reaction was next time people complain about annualized and tired franchises.
What concceivable correlation would there be between a dev being so vague and possibly lying about the features of his game to franchise being released annually? That is some ridiculous logic. You know what, a lot of annualized franchises are incredibly clear about the experience you'd be getting with the game.

Blind devotion is just as bad.
Telling people to stop complaining so much and enjoy what's there: 'blind devotion'.

Like I said: bringing out the worst in the gaming community.

Meaningful conversation? Good grief.

I think it's just pure disappointment. For me personally, this was BY FAR the most interesting thing about E3 2015. Sony should have read between the lines and given these guys more resources. Instead, like a lot of their published titles, they're horrendously mismanaged and just twist in the wind, coming out never, half baked, or YEARS after the announcement.

If anyone's gonna throw stones, throw them in Sony's direction. They're the ones responsible for overpricing an arcade title/underfunding their exclusive. Take your pick.

Hmm, why not just come out and say there won't be any multiplayer, instead of beating around the bush, alluding to some kind of interaction?

I like Sean and his team, but this doesn't seem right.

If this ends up being the case, I may hold out on this game for a while after all, I was actually pretty excited at the thought of bumping into people every once in a while.

Two players found each other in the same star system. They met on a planet and a space station, stood in the exact same place but were unable to see each other.

I'm posting this because this was legitimately my biggest question about this game, and it's good to see it answered definitively.

Added this to the OP, since people assume that it's been clear as day that this is single player:

I have a nice crow sandwich ready for certain users in the spoiler thread.

You could kill them and take their stuff?

Yeah but I mean given the size of the game world it would happen once if you're lucky, twice maybe if you really lucked out. Surely the experience itself was never going to be had if the player wasn't already satiated with the product by then? To be clear I still think they should have been clearer if MP isn't in at all, just I don't see how it really changes much. It would make up the smallest amount of playtime.

I do not fall into your criteria, as I don't care about MP in NMS on the personal level, but I will answer anyway.

The quality of the game and point of the feature is completely irrelevant to me. In fact the game itself is utterly irrelevant to the matter. Only thing that matters is if Developers lied or not. And if they did, there should be a backlash. Regardless of the game is good, I just have an absolute stance of "NO LYING TO YOUR CUSTOMER" period. If something had to be changed along the way, issue an official statement BEFORE the release. It's not like you don't have a buffer to do so before release date, we all know about cert process and how much time it takes.

I completely agree actually. I guess I just find it strange to see people looking to refund it over it and was kind of wondering how big of an aspect of the game they thought it was going to be.

If this was a major publisher like ea or ubisoft i would imagine we'd see less comments like this.

Genuine question for those who are disappointed by the lack of it. What would that one off fleeting 30 seconds to a minute experience of meeting another player add to the game that it's absence renders the game pointless now to some?

Gee this really looks like a waste of time, but hey, everyone makes their own fun. To me is like toying with food instead of eating.

Like I said: bringing out the worst in the gaming community.

It's perfectly valid to complain about a feature that was advertised and yet isn't in the game (if this isn't just some weird networking shit going on).

Not really gonna take this as confirmation BUT if it turns out there really is no way to see or interact with other players then the developers straight up lied about it.

Can't even have an actual rational discussion because both sides are just flinging shit.

None at all. I mean it sucks, but that's not going to diminish my enjoyment. I never really expected this universe to be full of millions of potential players.

There is a rational discussion to be had here but you won't find it. Not in this thread. I've said it far too much. Neogaf, reddit hell the internet at large is looking for the next "Gotcha!" moment in regards to this community.

Every thread turns into hyperbolic trash. If you don't like the game. If you're sole purpose is to shit on this game. Move on. Save yourself the energy.

Sean's silence during all this is deafening. He was tweeting while a ton of people were tweeting at him about this and chose to ignore it I guess. This isnt a community manager guy that is only connected to the game by what the devs allow him to know. This is Sean Murray, the creator of NMS and member of a small team.

I look forward to reading the PR damage control fluff piece.¯_(ツ)_/¯

There is a reason this discussion is in its own thread and not in the OT.

When I say fun to watch unfold, I mean checking in on the reddit three times today. I like seeing folks try to figure things out, especially when they were given such low odds of it being possible. Could be day 1 issues, could be instance related, could be that it's no longer in the game. But I kind of love knowing that at least two folks who are passionate enough about it found themselves in a rare situation and are trying to discover something about the game.

I think if you couldn't see anyone they would have outright said it, especially by now. It's likely that you technically can see other players, but it's such a small probablility that almost nobody will. Even if you're in the same spot on the same planet you might not see another person. Keep in mind that this is a game you could play for the rest of your life an not even see 1% of. Sean has stated that seeing another person is unlikely to the point where it's almost impossible, but everyone takes this to mean that there's a chance, and if there's a chance then surely they'll be one of the lucky ones to encounter another player. In a few days I'm sure more people will test this out and we'll see if it's actually possible or not, but I can't believe that Hello Games is intentionally lying to sell copies. They continue to claim that multiplayer is possible (or at least aren't stating it's impossible) and I have to assume that's because it is possible - technically.

Actually I would imagine there's a huge amount of people enjoying the game right now, even those that might have seen something about this. I would be too but we're still waiting on the game to be released here in the UK!

It's like The Witcher 3 graphics downgrade drama. Lots of angry people, but many more didn't really care and just got on with enjoying that game.

And here I thought we used NeoGAF to dissect games and have meaningful conversations about them while enjoying them.

Yeah, it's completely clear that for many, Gaf exists not to discuss games, but only for hype trains, glowing impressions, and lttp Bloodborne threads. Any and all criticism of anything involving games, or the industry overall, are hating and entitlement.

i never expected to see anyone anyway. That how they set this game up for me. Of course there'd always be the hope to get that moment. But i didn't expect it.

As such this revelation doesn't bother me too much. Hell are we even sure this is not some kind of bug or something they'll just have to fix?

Like i said, my expectations are met by what they released.

How late is it in the UK?

They'll issue a statement. Fanboys will rage and life will go on. Like everything else. Like every other gaming "scandal". People rage, forget and then buy the next game from said publisher.

The best part about this thread is reading the first sentence of a post and trying to guess which side they're going to end up on before you get to the next. Bonus points the more sentences in you get before you figure it out.

Typically the part that clinches it is something about "an indie game with so much promise."

What about the tweets coming from Sean over the past few hours about him complaining about server issues? You don't think any of that could impact such an experience, do you? Nah...of course not. Let's continue to thrash at each other though.

Triple A price gets triple A scrutiny

This is exactly what I've been trying to say. People are jumping in with $60 dollars worth of expectations. I think people would have been a lot more forgiving at a lower price point regardless of the state of the game. $60 is a lot of money for your average person to spend and they aren't going to care about how much of a feat the game is or how small the team was if it doesn't match up to those expectations. The weird thing is that I don't believe it was always $60 globally and it received a price jump.

And regarding the multiplayer stuff. It is an issue because every single thing that you say about your product is a selling point. A selling point is something that you use to get people to buy your product. IF the function to play with others really isn't there and this isn't just server issues then people have every right to be upset.

It's perfectly valid to complain about a feature that was advertised and yet isn't in the game (if this isn't just some weird networking shit going on).

Which we don't know but still hasn't stopped people from jumping to conclusions, making judgements about the development team, and making snap YouTube videos. I've seriously never seen one game attract so much vitriol so quickly.

Genuine question for those who are disappointed by the lack of it. What would that one off fleeting 30 seconds to a minute experience of meeting another player add to the game that it's absence renders the game pointless now to some?

The games universe is so big that it would be extremely rare for it to happen by chance. The game isn't even something that would benefit much from MP since the whole idea is to gather resources and explore your way, at your pace. I'm not trying to offend here, just genuinely curious how it would have made such an impact in the first place.

It's something rare and cool and unique that I thought might never happen to me but had the possibility to and that was exciting. Even the thought of hearing about it on a podcast or a post on GAF about someone finding another player and just kind of messing around or even just passing by after giving each other a nod or something would be super cool. Like how in Journey when you meet another player and it's all cool and you dance and chirp and then explore and journey together. Just the thought of something like that maybe happening was super cool, connecting to this random person with no way of really communicating and then having some form of interaction in thi cold, lonely, vast universe was a cool thought.

I'm still looking forward to the game (PC release is Friday...) and will still enjoy it as everything else about the game seems to be exactly what I expected and I can't wait. I'm still disappointed about the multiplayer stuff not being in (or if it is in, then not working right now) because it was such a cool idea.

Sean and team really sort of failed to inject this experiment with enough 'game' huh? The idea of finding people in a sprawling universe and it be this Journey moment was one of the games big dream potentials and its just not in there.

So its just you and the algorithm generating the world. Abject loneliness.

It's perfectly valid to complain about a feature that was advertised and yet isn't in the game (if this isn't just some weird networking shit going on).
Where's the advertisement? I'd like to see it. Not the one interview from two years ago.

If this was a major publisher like ea or ubisoft i would imagine we'd see less comments like this.
Yeah, and with pretty good reason too! But I must have missed EA's massively ambitious open-world universe game last year. Maybe that plays a part too somehow.

No, I'm pretty sure you trying to shut down any negative talk about the game is blind devotion.
Show me the receipts. I'm not shutting down shit.

I could see how you think it's not meaningful when you consider complaining about an advertised feature not working (or missing) from the game being a "nitpick."
Again, bit of a stretch using the word 'advertised' there.

Actually I would imagine there's a huge amount of people enjoying the game right now, even those that might have seen something about this. I would be too but we're still waiting on the game to be released here in the UK!

Another case where an excellent game, made by a beloved developer was getting deserved scrutiny for misleading advertisement.
