A Tale of 'Merica and Milk - I just walked out and abandoned a job interview. FML.

What blows my mind is that at no point during those 45 min did Thacker bother asking why he was waiting or what specifically the interview process entails. Neither of those questions would've been considered rude or out of line.

but I promise anyone in this thread that if you had not been upset at what I was sitting in than I highly advise you get a backbone and stand up for yourself at some point in your life.

I'll ask you to please not make any more threads complaining of unemployment in the future. I've listened to it enough over the years from people I know IRL that are just like you, and are still unemployed after 8 years and several opportunities. I will tell you that it gets harder to get chances the longer your unemployment history goes on.

Keep my commitments?

This is.... so...angering.

I was there 15 minutes and waited almost an hour.
Who is the one that didn't keep his commitments?

Can you imagine if I showed up 45 minutes late?

My boyfriend waited 30 to 45 minutes before for interviews. You can leave if you want but it speaks VOLUMES about you.

I can't deal with you. No wonder you're having issues getting interviews.

right, lay over... put up with any shit they give you because hell. AT LEAST THEY ARE PAYING YOU SOMETHING

'merica

He didn't ask you to give him head or something, jeez. He just asked for your salary history and to fucking wait.

You have a problem OP. When 90% of the thread is saying that you're wrong, and most of them have jobs, you realize that you must be doing something wrong right?

I don't think you understand this whole process man.

You're trying to get them to hire you... not the other way around.

I'm almost 90% sure this is a troll thread, no way this can be real.

I just find it odd knowing his history and it's not like he had anything else to do.

To be fair, how long did you expect the entire interview process to be? How much time did you "schedule" for it?

I mean the guy already said that that was their process, so according to him he wasn't really "late".

I am unemployed, and would kill for any interview. Hell after 100 resumes and applications in three weeks this was one of the only people to call me back.

But I do have dignity and pride, I guess GAF thinks I have too much of it.
Working in an environment you are made to feel shitty and inferior is not a place I want to be. Best of luck to your boyfriend, he may like getting walked on but I don't.

And yea, I do feel the world is out to get me. You can think a fucked up justice system and legalized discrimination for that. It's shook my confidence and given me extreme anxiety in situations like this.

We aren't alone in this.

When was the last actual job you held down, IT or otherwise? Have you considered that perhaps the rules have changed since the last time you were in the workforce? It's an employer's market, the rest of us are just getting by until the next economic boom.

I admire the perseverance you've had in pursuing jobs in your hometown and in continuing your education, but you need to check the attitude at the door. I didn't have a car for my interview at my current job. I took the train for an hour, then walked for 45 minutes in the muddy road to their front door. For a 3 hour interview. 45 minutes is nothing if what you want is at the end of that road. And what you want may not even necessarily be at the first job you get - but you need that first job, shitty though it may be, to get back in the workforce and make yourself a more desirable candidate for the job you want. I spent two years working as an underpaid postdoc learning new skills and making connections before I got this job. I also worked part-time in a bar to make ends meet, which often included the awesome experiences of mopping up vomit, taking out trash, cleaning clogged toilets, getting disrespected by kids 10 years my junior and getting barked at by bartenders for daring to glance at my phone.

You want to exhibit pride? Show pride in your work, in your appearance, in your accomplishments, in your professional demeanor. Not in your interview process. Not to the people that can affect your future. You never walk out of an interview. You never tell off a hiring manager. Ever. You sit down, discuss the job, and if you don't like the 'vibe' they are putting off, you write a "Sorry, but I'm going to pursue other opportunities, thanks for your time" email. Anything more is completely unacceptable.

You didn't just burn a bridge, you salted the earth in every direction for 100 miles. This isn't American Beauty, and you aren't Kevin Spacey. Was that worth your pride, now that you know it was a simple misunderstanding? What did you do this afternoon that was so much more productive than having a 'late' or bad interview?

I know it feels like the world (and now GAF) is an unjust place raining blows on you from every direction, but you have to take these down times to improve as a person. You did it at least once. Do it again.

no its definitely all of us

not him

hes perfect

I honestly feel the receptionist just didn't have time for this. She didn't offer coffee or water, but I could tell she was extremely behind what she was needing to do which is why I didn't really want to interrupt her to find out what the deal was.

OK, RIGHT THERE! Right there you can see that you didn't want the job in the first place. You are coming up with excuses like this. Maybe subconsciously you didn't like the place/people and were finding excuses to bail out.

references before an interview, and salary history are not normal things to ask for.
Depends on the interview style of of the company and/or who is interviewing you.

You really goofed up here. Some times you got to bite the bullet when you really need a job. Instead you burned the bridge and drenched the area with salt. I would lay off on interviewing for awhile. This story has probably already doing rounds at other firms. You need to change your attitude though. Especially if you are going into IT. No one will want to keep it long if you don't.

What blows my mind is that at no point during those 45 min did Thacker bother asking why he was waiting or what specifically the interview process entails. Neither of those questions would've been considered rude or out of line.

That's what I dont get. He could of asked and they would have told him whatever process they had. Reguardless a 45 min wait is nothing.

This is true. If this had been a job at a large corporation like GM... HP.. IBM.. etc... waiting longer would have been more acceptable due to the promise of the benefits and the reputation behind the company. Working in a small office with 8 people when the boss while busy, obviously doesn't have time to even give you a decent conversation and sorry that he's running late it not a culture or workplace I want to be a part of. GAF obviously can't relate because they are only seeing it through my "entitled" word... but I promise anyone in this thread that if you had not been upset at what I was sitting in than I highly advise you get a backbone and stand up for yourself at some point in your life.

I agree, there was nothing wrong with acting on your gut instinct in that situation. Good on you for having the independence to do what you did given your situation. I think a lot of people here see it as a weak willed action, but hey ho. A job position has to speak to you in a number of ways for you to be interested in the position. Some of the reactions I've seen in here seem a little closed minded, like people aren't allowed to be different or be defined by their own character in a process such as a job interview.

Good job on being you. First impressions are important, both ways.

Based on the pay you stated and this being a career/job in the field you specialize in, yeah you made an error. I'm currently unemployed myself but thankfully I'm not in desperation mode. But, given the chance I was granted an interview for something that would provide myself a kick-start, I would wait all day. Even if they told me 3 o'clock and nobody said anything, I would wait until they are closing the office building lol.

Hopefully, the end result will not harm you. And, definitely explain to the guy that you had an emergency or something. Pride can sometimes be your downfall.

Not only are you giving out shit advice, you can even be bothered to listen to others' advice.

As someone that interviews candidates with increasing frequency at my office, let me tell you that any of the "advice" that Thacker gives in this thread is completely 100% wrong and will help to make sure your job goes to someone else.

This is all one elaborate troll, isn't it?

After the posts on the last page or so, it HAS to be. No one is this ridiculous.

How many times have you actually done interviews for IT firms? This is very common, especially if the interview is in the afternoon.

You CAN show up late as long as you call.

ITT: a beggar is being a chooser, after having posted for months about not even being given an interview due to his criminal history. This is going to be legendary!

doesnt your body hurt

from being their doormat all day

'merica

Nobody is saying this is a good thing. Just that it is reality, and adapting yourself to reality will be faster/more efficient than waiting for reality to adapt to you.

Um that is what she is there for dude. For answering your questions. Also she didn't offer you water or coffee? Where you that parched?

Good to know the OPs gut decisions continue to lead him to better things.

IT People are a dime a dozen and most of them don't know anything. At my experience at Fortune 500 companies to smaller ones this has always been the case. You are not special, get over yourself.

I think this thread has run it's course. At this point it's just a dog pile on the OP, and you guys wonder why he's starting to act aggressive.

I think you missed when he poisoned the well with this rather toxic reply to an otherwise candid email;

xxxxxx,

With all due respect I arrived at 2:45pm and walked out at 3:47pm. I filled out your application, took your test and was completed by 3:00. Your previous candidate that you were interviewing walked out around 3:05 and I waited an extra 40+ minutes for my interview that you scheduled at 3.. While I understand things come up, and business must keep going, I am also very professional in how I handle myself and any business relationships. To be made to wait, with not so much as you coming out to shake my hand, introducing yourself and letting me know you were running behind I feel was extremely unprofessional. While I respect your accomplishments and your business, I have no desire to pursue any sort of working relationship with your company.

Thanks,
xxxxxxx

As someone that struggled to get a job for a while, don't think you should just be patient for these kinds of things? For all you know, servers could be exploding or something. What is the harm in just waiting?

My job is a contract to hire position, and I'm still in the contract period right now. My boss was supposed to talk to me first thing this morning about going full time hire, but then some stuff went wrong with one of our applications and he was in meetings about it all morning. I ran into him in a hallway and he told me he would find me later. I told him I understood.

Then guess what, it was even BETTER. He took me to lunch with someone from the contracting company I got the job through. It was a nice lunch, all paid for, and I'll be a full on hire once the contract period ends!

Actually a lot of people are trying to get the OP to see reason and own up to his mistake in order to take stock and grow from the situation.

Are we really supposed to think that a 45 minute wait is some great dishonorable struggle that the great Thacker should not be reduced to?

Honestly if that is the worst you ever have to go through to get a job then you are literally one of the luckiest people in the world.

I can barely even process how entitled you are. Sure, have respect for yourself, but you're acting like you're the fucking Princess of Wales. When in reality you're an unemployed IT guy who likes to bitch on video game forums about how nothing is good enough for you. No one owes you anything. Not even a cup of coffee.

GAF not realizing that by giving your salary history to an employer you are giving them complete control of the negotiating process when it comes offer time is beyond me. They already have enough control as it is but giving them an even more advantageous spot to pay your ass less is fucking laughable.

Guy who's had no reliable employment in his life is giving negotiating tips. Love it.

It wasn't a canid fucking email.

It was a "I am suddenly ready the absolute minute you finally walked out"
No apology. Nothing. Suddenly I became worth his time when I showed him I was willing to walk the fuck out.

I am acting very defensive now, because I can't stand some of the ignorance in this thread. I'll continue being unemployed and in debt, and you guys can continue letting people run all over you. I'd be very curious to see if anyone here against me could even be remotely considered successful.

Actually a lot of people are trying to get the OP to see reason and own up to his mistake in order to take stock and grow from the situation.

A lot of people are taking a poor approach to it but yeah.

The "Eat shit so long as you have a job" approach to seeking employment is horrible, depressing and a symptom of a pretty sick culture in America.

I don't even know why I'm at work now. I mean, yeah, they're paying me, but I don't want to be here. Fucking corporate America tricked me into this mortgage! Grrrrrr

Holy shit.

Starting to?

Check his reaction at the interview and the email he sent after.
He was acting aggressive before he even created this thread. This thread was created as a result of his aggressiveness.

Actually a lot of people are trying to get the OP to see reason and own up to his mistake in order to take stock and grow from the situation.

If you call telling him to seek medical help, calling him a idiot, calling him entitled, lazy, etc reasoning, then I guess you're right.

Congratulations. I followed your story a bit and noticed you found work in Austin.

All the ignorance is coming from you.
