Actually I believe Acclaim does own Shadowman, just not Turok. Valiant comics started off re-inventing old comic book charcters from the 60s like Turok but then they started mixing in original characters of their own, and I think Shadowman was one of the new ones.
Er, Acclaim bougt out Valiant in the mid/late 1990s iirc (who was later rebranded Acclaim Comics for a short time before being completely dissovled). Turok is an Acclaim property afaik.

SolidSnakex said:
So you're saying Nintendo fans would've saved Acclaim by buying all the crappy games they released this generation?
Well, they did last generation (same with Midway). Still, increased 3rd party support for Nintendo in recent years (particularly from Japan) would've ensured that Acclaim wouldn't have had the same captive hungry audience they enjoyed on N64.

No, Turok's a special case. It's owned by some licensing company that holds a bunch of other random cartoon/comic/TV properties. If you go back in the last Acclaim 10-K, it has a bit about how they lost the license due to nonpayment of royalties earlier this year.

DFS.

What really matters is the 600+ employees who were simultaneously laid off around the world on Friday. Locked out of their offices with no reimbursement of expenses, no severance pay, and worst of all, no COBRA extension of benefits.

Any proceeds from the sale of Acclaim's assets should be used to reimburse them - but that will never happen because the company's outstanding debts far outweigh the total value of those assets.

It's a disaster.

We'll never know though. What we do know is that hte new Turok wasn't good, it bombed, and basically every Acclaim game released this gen is buggy. Looking at this, i'd say there's little chance that much would've changed if they'd made it exclusive. What it seems to come down to is that they just didn't have what it took to make games anymore.

From all that Acclaims shown so far, if they'd put all their games exclusive on the GC they'd either bombed, or Nintendo fans would've been buying alot of bad/mediocre games.

I wouldn't say all their games were buggy. Extreme G3 isn't buggy (at least not on GCN) and I didn't find the bugs in Turok to be a big issue. Maybe being a fan of the series I was able to overlook them. Still, with games like Enter the Matrix and Driver 3 doing so well, it's hard to say where Turok went wrong. As far being exclusive goes, they did pretty good on N64. Saying GCN fans would have been stuck with crappy games is your opinion, and you're entitled to it, but not everyone feels that way. For their time, the N64 games were of good quality, so that's why I think they would have made a better game if it had been on one system, but you're right, we'll never know. It looks like Midway is opening up a new studio in Austin though, so maybe some of the employees will find a job there or maybe Retro. Classic Media owns the rights to Turok. I hope someone will continue the series.

um, the point is that if they were exlusive, they probably wouldn't be bad/medicore...

Yes, of course, Acclaim would have survived if Turok Evolution had been a Gamecube exclusive. It would have sold millions and millions, easily making those 100 million dollars for the company.

Both games would have really stood out in the Nintendo lineup, especially in 2002 when PS2 had Vice City and XBox had Splinter Cell as 3rd party exclusives. This might have been hailed as a GCN-exlusive next-gen Turok game taking the franchise foward.

Chances are Cube owners would've ignored Turok in favor of Metroid Prime.

It's freakin' ACCLAIM.
They would have found a way to screw things up, exclusive titles or not.

Remember the advertising fiasco with the tombstones, and the "change your name to Turok" ad campaign in Britain?
Remember Acclaim being sued by Dave Mirra, Dualstar, Mary-Kate and Ashley, and Battleborne?

Their problems went FAR beyond the systems they developed for.

Dualstar is Mary-Kate and Ashley.

Seriously, people need to just drop the whole "they should've developed on GC" bit. It would not have changed a thing. Crappy games don't sell much on the system--shoot, many good games get passed over as well. One of the few smart moves that Acclaim did make this gen was to bow out of GC development.

or gotten both since they share some similar traits, and are darker, more "mature" targeted games...

I had no problem with Acclaim quitting GAMECUBE developement. What I did have a problem with was the PR surrouding it...making it out to be that it was hurting them to even make games for Nintendo...pffft...what really hurt them is that they made games that sucked and wouldn't sell on ANY system!

efralope is so secure in his knowledge of these strange parallel worlds, where Acclaim is not only Nintendo exclusive but top, top quality!

yeah, like, HELLO. the red star was the first acclaim game with any promise in years and it was made by like, mostly new/younger people at the company.

were all of the N64 turoks even good?

Depends on who you ask. I always thought they seemed good because there really wasn't an abundance of good FPS on consoles last gen. For PC gamers, they never really took to Turok like console gamers did. For example

Turok 2 N64: 89.6%
Turok 2 PC: 67.9%

Acclaim bought Valiant, but Valiant never owned Turok. When Valiant launched, they decided to anchor their lineup with a couple of old comic book characters from the 60s that were originally created by Gold Key comics (which got out of the comic book business in the 80s), and Turok was one of those characters. Acclaim mentioned in an SEC filing a couple months back that their Turok license had been revoked for failure to pay royalties due from Turok: Evolution.

But like I said, I'm pretty sure Shadowman was an original Valiant creation, so Acclaim should own the rights to it (for now).

And really either way, it's all up for grabs anyway.

What proof do you have of this though?

Uh, I think the idea that efralope was making is that resources wouldn't have been split up amount three console versions. To ask for proof is to only go by history of Acclaim's exclusive titles which did pretty well.

"To ask for proof is to only go by history of Acclaim's exclusive titles which did pretty well."

But you can't do that. Because then you'd be basing it on their N64 history, which is what was brought up. If you go and look at N64 3rd party sales compared to the GC 3rd party sales, there's a big difference. GC 3rd party sales are nowhere near the level of N64 3rd party sales, there still isn't a million seller from a 3rd party on the GC (although SA2 Battle is very close). They still wouldn't have put up enough money to actually save Acclaim even if they did sell on par with your average GC 3rd party title.

And that was my point. Asking for proof that Acclaim would have made better games by going exclusive is a bit of a stretch. Especially when Efralope said "um, the point is that if they were exlusive, they probably wouldn't be bad/medicore". He didn't say tey wouldn't have been bad/mediocore. He's suggesting that in the case of a game like Turok:Evoloution, less resources would have been diverted away from porting process of the game and (hopefully) more effort would have went into improving the gameplay and bug testing.

As I said before that's due to a more crowded marketplace (and lower userbase). GameCube has several 3rd party million sellers though (REmake, SA2Battle, Soul Calibur 2, Super Monkey Ball, RE Zero, PacMan World 2, Rogue Leader, etc)

Gosh, Acclaim finally bought it. If you'd have asked me 5 years ago what I'd do if Acclaim went out of business, I'd have told you "throw a party" or something like that.

To my surprise, I'm more sad than glad. It's true Acclaim didn't deliver many polished games. It became cool to mock them and to poke fun at them. Their games were worth playing, if not only to point out their flaws, and it is because of this notoriety that they shall be missed. Acclaim, you won't be forgotten.

I don't Know if making Turok: Evelution game exclusive to Gamecube would have helped Acclaim. Weren't both Crazy Taxi and 18 wheeler close a million seller for Acclaim? If those two games didn't help Acclaim, I don't see how one other game could have helped Acclaim out of bankruptcy. It not like the old days when they made thier best games for N64 and sold millions.

MIDWAY ANNOUNCES PLANS TO OPEN INTERNAL DEVELOPMENT STUDIO IN AUSTIN, TEXAS

CHICAGO, September 2, 2004 – Leading interactive entertainment developer and publisher, Midway Games Inc. (NYSE: MWY) today announced plans to open a new internal development studio in Austin, Texas. Midway is actively recruiting for the new studio which it plans to open in the near future.

Midway will be at the upcoming Austin Game Conference on Sept. 9-10 at the Austin Convention Center. For more information on the conference please visit www.gameconference.com.

Midway currently has product development studios in Chicago, San Diego and Seattle. Additional information and job opportunities can be found at www.midway.com.
Sounds like they could be actively recuiting from the old Acclaim Studios Austin. It'd be nice if they picked up their games.

When I tlak about million sellers i'm talking about in 1 territory only. The N64 would have million sellers in the US alone, where you wouldn't have to combine worldwide sales.

Sure, N64 was a monstrous success in the US (about 20 million consoles sold here alone, only NES, PS1 & PS2 moved more). Elsewhere however, GameCube's actually doing a little better so far... overall GC likely has more 3rd party million sellers than N64 boasted anyway.
