He got fired because he tried to diffuse a situation. Let that sink in. Holy shit. My country is fucked.

The police are here to protect us. The idea that they are a paramilitary force that uses violence to protect the ruling class from the disenfranchised is preposterous. Police shootings are an unintended consequence of policing.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jon_Burge

Burge was acquitted of police brutality charges in 1989 after a first trial resulted in a hung jury. He was suspended from the Chicago Police Department in 1991 and fired in 1993 after the Police Department Review Board ruled that he had used torture.

After Burge was fired, there was a groundswell of support to investigate convictions for which he provided evidence. In 2002, a special prosecutor began investigating the accusations. The review, which cost $17 million, revealed improprieties that resulted in no action due to the statute of limitations. Several convictions were reversed, remanded, or overturned. All Illinois death row inmates received reductions in their sentences. Four of Burge's victims were pardoned by then-Governor Ryan and subsequently filed a consolidated suit in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois against the City of Chicago, various police officers, Cook County and various State's Attorneys. A $19.8 million settlement was reached in December 2007, with the "city defendants".
In October 2008, Patrick Fitzgerald had Burge arrested on charges of obstruction of justice and perjury in relation to a civil suit regarding the torture allegations against him. On April 1, 2010, Judge Joan Lefkow postponed the trial, for the fourth time, to May 24, 2010.[1] Burge was convicted on all counts on June 28, 2010. He was sentenced to four-and-one-half years in federal prison on January 21, 2011 and was released in October 2014.
Justice served. Thank you government for putting a stop to criminals like this.

Haha, the way the Reddit thread described it, it's as if the only job of the police in US is to shoot and kill people.

He's holding a gun? Well we are now in danger, better kill him first.
No gun? Oh he might have one hidden around him, so better kill him first before we are in danger, since our training taught us that he CAN draw and shoot us first before we even click our triggers.

While in most countries, even for militaries, escalation to shooting is an absolute, absolute last resort. It's usually done after shouting several warnings, or else you do not shoot.

This is what your freedom to guns has bought you.

Again, bullshit:

Every time someone makes this argument, they are erasing the role that racial oppression plays. White gun ownership is not a problem for the police. Black existence, armed or unarmed as we've seen so many times, is a problem for the police.

Guns are the cause of a lot of problems in America (suicides, school shootings, domestic violence), but they are not the cause of police brutality. Police brutality is a direct result of white supremacist violence - which predates legal black gun ownership. Don't try to white wash that.

These are not mutually exclusives. You have a problem that compounds on another problem.

Anyway in other countries, it's standard protocol to give a warning before shooting, so such things doesn't even happen accidentally. All I can see is your police are justifying doing this because the threat of being armed is very high.

Yup.

If this had been a white guy he would not have been fired.

The fact is that it's not killing a black man that got him fired. Because to a U.S police officer The Black Man is the most dangerous weapon around.

Of course, morons. This is the effect of committing a disproportionate rate of violent crime per population; it means that all of you get viewed as criminals. Get your act straights and clean up!

This cops seriously did overreact but we have to lay much of the blame on the thousands of black criminals in the inner cities (like South Chicago) that give all black men a bad name. When you hear of black guys shooting each other 30-40 times every weekend in places like that where guns are banned, the uneducated and naive general public as well as the cops tend to think all black dudes are suspects. It's sad but generally hard to avoid. It's human nature.

While I disagree with the way some Blacks have been treated, there's no denying Blacks are responsible for an inordinate amount of crime. Until they stop committing so much crime it's up to responsible Blacks to be more understanding of cops. Just sayin'

There's a right to bear arms and then there's walking down the street carrying a M16 . ? Why would any one but police do that ?

I like how black people deliberately set up scenarios they know they'll get busted for to prove a point. WE ARE PICKED ON BY EVERYONE!!!

honestly can't expect it to be equal treatment with the BLM situations and threats so prevalent in the news... more than likely but unverifiable is the probability that before the BLM movement there would be WAY less activity than what is seen in this video.

1. Does this dog and pony show pay the bills?
2. Immediately responding with "I don't need to tell you my name if I'm not being charged" does not cause any goodwill in a police contact.
3. At no point was he handcuffed, as you ascertained.
Bottom line, do blacks get treated differently than whites? Yes, most of the time. However, there's a degree of truth behind every stereotype. That's why stereotypes stick around. Stop crying about racial injustices that happened WELL before you were born, get your collective act together and stop blaming everyone else for being "racist" because all you're doing is highlighting your ignorance.

This is what Trump is talking about when he says we need leadership. If I were the elected Sheriff of that county ALL cops who took part in the violation of ALL of that man's rights, not only his 2nd amendment rights but his fourth amendment rights as well (and I could probably turn it into a hate crime with a little colorful writing), would answer for what they did.. Why does it take a fucking army to stop a guy and say ''hey...you mind if I talk you for a second?" and let him know that you're just concerned as a public safety officer and you just wanna touch bases? If he's on the up he won't mind. I don't mind if a cop stops me and asks me why I'm carrying two .45 ACPs an an AR-15. Most of them already know...we have wolves in the upper peninsula of Michigan and not just the 2 legged kind and any man would be prudent to be well armed on those snowmobile/4wheeler paths. But I still don't mind when they stop me just to shoot the breeze and satisfy themselves that I'm not an isis fighter on my way to shoot up an old folks home. What the fuck ever happened to common sense?

These ones are from just the white guys video:

i think carrying a rifle with full ammo and walking around neighbourhood it's quiet intimidating, even if you do that for a social experiment. it is lucky you don't get shot by that officer.

ya these damn coll-age lieberal types with their gun rights activism

It makes sense when you see the astrisk in the 2nd amendment.

"A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the *people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed."

I was disgusted reading this. There are just no words to describe what an injustice this hero had to go through.

I weep for America to be honest. Between this type of thing happening, and on the other side of the coin, the fragile relationship between POC and the authorities, along with a hate fueled Presidential campaign gaining a ton of traction, I'm just not sure what people in that country are thinking, and frankly, not meaning any offense, but I'm glad I live in Canada when I hear about things like this.
