Advance Wars 1 better than the Sequel?

I think so. I like the addition of the COs (although some seemed rather silly), generally I like the original better. I don’t like all the cannons, lasers, flame radars, pipes and what not. They just clutter the map for no reason. I also do not like the Neo-Tank. Yea it’s more powerful, but do we really a more powerful tank. The Mid-tank was pretty damn heavy.

I didn't like the Neo Tank either. Just seemed wasteful, even though it was more powerful. I also didn't like the some of the diversions from modern military warfare either.

With that said, Fire Emblem is still a better series IMO.

Utterly disagree! AW1 felt like a turn-based C&C with too much emphasis on the bottlenecks in each map. There wasn't enough variation in units to work around the mundane level design. The canons, lasers, pipes and other environmental elements in the sequel helped get rid of the originals problems as did the added variation in COs, though the lack of new units was still a disappointment. For me the sequel seemed a far more open game where multi-faceted strategies could be employed to beat a map.

I think both are excellent, but Advance Wars1 was a lot better. Some of the CO powers got ridiculous in AW2, and I didn't care for some of the unit additions (neo-tank). Instead of adding unique units, they were just upgrades that weren't really needed. AW2 is still definitely worth your cash though. I wouldn't skip AW if you're playing the series for the first time, because it is the best IMO.

Fire Emblem = boring. AW > FE

Advance Wars and Advance Wars 2 are vastly superior strategy games to Fire Emblem 6 and 7. I can understand why people like Fire Emblem better (story, setting), though.

Advance Wars 2 is better all around. The campaign is longer with a lot more variation and the new COs and the extra CO power both add a lot more choices to the game. That said, I played Advance Wars a hell of a lot more because it was a very fresh experience and AW2's campaign was really easy.

The main difference between FE and AW IMO has always been that AW tends to take a much more strategic approach while FE relies on your ability to level up your characters into walking tanks. It is FE's story and characters that push it above AW for me, but not too far above.

I prefered AW2, but I can see how someone would prefer the first.

Can't wait for Battalion Wars. Unfortunately I sold my GC half a year ago, and I'm not picking a new one up since Revolution will have BC. I guess, Nintendo can have their typical early generation drought with Rev. as well for all I care, since I'll be getting caught up on Fire Emblem, BW, and Zelda:TP.

advance wars is the better game to me. oh fond memories.

and fire emblem is good, but no advance wars 1.

AW2 iz better based on the fact it has mor playable COs (which means mor music. Huzzah!) Oh, and the CPU also plays mor intelligently (in one it made predicatable strategies like chasing APCs).

Apparently there's yet another tank making the lineup in AWDS. The Megatank. Hate to make a random post about it, but saw the picture on the IGN boards and it made me think of the original post in this thread. "Yippee!".

Apparently the capturing system has been tweaked a bit as well. You can now get a unit from a captured factory that is the same as the unit that captures it. Since no CO is shown in the shot, I'd assume it has to do with all COs and not a specific CO and CO Power. It turns out this is ONLY in Combat Mode.

whats a pipe runner?
* The Mega Tank is a bigger tank. Bigger is better, right? The mobility of it sucks, though.
* The Piperunner moves along the pipes exclusively. Remember the ones introduced in AW2?
* The Stealth Fighter is extremely hard to beat - when in Stealth mode, it can't be hit by Artillerly, Missiles, or anything except Fighters. It can attack land, sea, and air units, and does pretty big damage. It uses fuel quickly, though. This could be the new uber unit.
* The Black Bomb is essentially a guided missile or kamikaze. You move it to a square and command it to detonate, damaging all units within a certain radius.
* The Black Boat works as a Lander and carries two ground units, but it can also repair other units.
* The Carrier ship can hold two Fighters, and fire ranged anti-air missiles.

EDIT: Well reading that changes my post above, it seems the new capturing system is for Combat Mode only, a special mode.

I missed the facial animations in AW2 that the first one had during the battles .

Me too. It sucks that the video I saw for WarsDS didnt have them either. Bring them back please!!

Game is looking good, can somebody that has played it at E3 comment on the controls?

I just finally got into AW2 a couple weeks ago after owning it since launch. Let me just say that the Campaign is much much MUCH better than the first one. It gets quite insane sometimes. I for one really like the new COs and their super powers. Alot of them completely change the game and provide a shitload of options. The Neotanks do seem a bit extreme, but I see how they are necessary for COs like Sami and Colin to stand up to the others.

I can kinda understand liking the first one better, but after playing AW2 so much it just seems so vanilla.

CO_Andy, please stop deliberately misspelling simple words like 'more' and 'is'. You're making my brain ache here. :p

The truth, you speak it. Adv Wars 2 campaign is huge, gets very challenging and has a great deal of variety to keep you on your toes.

And don't get me started on Fire Emblem..bleh.."I CAN ONLY GO TO A STORE DURING BATTLE A-HYUK"
It pisses me off. (Don't get me wrong, its cool and all, but so incredibly frustrating...if they had a screen between battles that let you walk around town and talk to your characters, and buy stuff for them it would be perfect)

Thanks for the unit type heads up. Piperunner sounds like a cool addition - although as mentioned way back on GAF, a minelayer for tank defense could have been cool - and while the Stealth Bomber sounds tough, it's basically a flying sub that's going to be vulnerable to blind fire and likely some other things while it's cloaked.

The piperunner sounds like a version of the rail turtle from Super Famicom Wars.

I hope that 5 star defense territory finally shows up again. If not, they should move the max stars down to 4, as the 5th blank star, a holdover from Super Famicom wars like the Medium Tank, has always been confusing.
