AFL (Aussie Rules) 2013 |OT| See the Bombers Shoot Up, Up

Get the feeling they are going to get entirely off season penalties.

I agree with this. There are way too many players involved, and way too many prominent players involved. The AFL is not going to suspend that many, and risk hurting its bottom line.

Hird will be forced to retire, and there will be significant loss of draft picks. Thats all I can see them doing, they'll want to give the impression of doing something without actually doing anything. Maybe a loss of points, too, if they really want to look like they know whats going on, but I'm not sure on that.

My prediction from a few months ago was:

-six month suspension for players, to begin at end of home and away season and include official training sessions, coupled with
-loss of points, so the AFL don't have a team in the finals that's forced to forfeit,
-Severe fines,
-loss of draft picks, but not the ability to trade for them,
-Jobe loses his medal

The AFL have a delicate balancing act between punishing enough to satisfy the non-Essendon supporting public and to avoid an appeal by ASADA, and not punishing to the extent that Essendon languish at the bottom for years, a la Carlton. I think the AFL would prefer to only punish the club rather than the players but their hands are tied by the massive amount of precedent from WADA. The only way I can imagine that the players will escape punishment is because they don't have any direct evidence (ie positive samples) and the witnesses aren't conclusive enough (unlike Armstrong). Any other punishment handed down by the AFL will be on the basis of disrepute, which doesn't have much of a standard of proof.

Pretty straight forward round.

The Ade v Nth game is probably the only 50/50 game, could go either way though if North don't give up another ridiculous lead they should do it comfortably.

Syd v Coll could be interesting if the Collingwood from last week turn up. Sydney have looked vulnerable, in my eyes, in recent weeks.

I suppose the Bulldogs could get up this week as well. I still don't know what I think of either side.

And while I do expect Geelong to be able to get the points, I'm a little wary of a revved up Port due to their midfield and Geelong's complacencies.

My tips for the weekend:

Hawthorn (by 50 points)

Richmond
Geelong
Footscray
Sydney
Gold Coast

Essendon
North Melbourne
Fremantle

I'd love for Ports to win, but it's a huge ask to beat the Cats at home after they come off a loss.

Great tip with the Dogs Jambo. Blues shown up yet again to be a rubbish, soft, nothing team.

Damn the Dogs look promising for future years though.

Carn the doggies!!! Great game by the boys today, the last month we have played some great footy.

Geelong and Hawthorn are still clearly the best sides in the comp, don't think Collingwood will trouble them much at all however Freo is a bit of a smokey.

Great tip with the Dogs Jambo. Blues shown up yet again to be a rubbish, soft, nothing team.

I managed to catch a bit of their last few matches and they've looked really, really good. Was time for a win for them and the Blues have been so unreliable this year.

Pretty big game from the Pies too, although ultimately I don't think it will really effect Sydney. They're so powerful come finals time, it wouldn't surprise me at all if they go back-to-back.

Only issue with Pies winning is that they now have a 2 game advantage on Port, as do Richmond. Luckily the Blues losing does give us a 2 game buffer. I only saw the last quarter of the Port match and we looked good there, but obviously the Cats just outclassed us earlier on, which isn't that surprising with them coming off a loss and playing at home.

I tipped against my own team this week because I knew everyone else would too. That backfired when they won lol. Luckily doesn't hurt me though.

Why the fuck would they get rid of him?! They haven't had a stellar year, but they definitely look to be on the up.

I suppose the dangling carrot of Paul Roos may have been enough to prompt them to make this move, but I think it's a bit too soon.

Give him another year, they could easily win 11-12 games next year and make the finals. I think the main problem was making the finals in his first year and then floundering around the bottom of the ladder since then.

Yeah, I agree. Only other option is somebody else big and out of left field stolen from another team, ala Ross Lyon for Freo a couple of years ago, but I can't think of any names that would fit. Maybe a Scott bros. coaching duo? Its genius!

How pissed of would Melbourne be if he's ignored them for months and months and then goes up to coach the Lions :lol

Fuck the afl. Fuck every biased sports reporter in the country. Fuck caro the slanderous rumour monger and fuck vlad.

Cant wait to see them all get sued to pieces. Cunts, the lot of them. And their brainless sycophants.

"On information before the AFL, there is no specific anti-doping rule violation attributed to any individual player for use of AOD-9604 or any other prohibited substance," Dillon said.

And a nice fuck you to everyone calling them drug cheats.

Don't see how they're not drug cheats.

Jobe took AOD9604.

AOD9604 is a WADA banned drug.

Also, lol @ any Essendon supporter calling someone else a sycophants. They've had their heads up Hird's butt for the last six months even though it's obvious to everyone the damage he's done to your club. Kick him out and start rebuilding your reputation.

Yeah well

This is despite WADA declaring AOD-9604 – an anti-obesity drug – a banned substance under the S0 (non-approved substances) clause).

However, Dillon said further infraction notices could still be issued with the joint investigation between the AFL and ASADA to remain open.

They will get charged at some point.

Kinda weird that they wouldn't wait for the ASADA report and charge the players and management at the same time...

Hi guys, depressed Carlton fanatic coming in to say hi.

Good to see that the coaches and admins have been charged.

I think WADA will step in and deal with the players separately. They broke the code and WADA can't be seen as soft! I guess the AFL and fat Vlad are the soft ones as this point.

You reckon Hirdy and his mates will appeal to the Supreme Court?

At least I can focus on this rather than Carlton's shitful season...

I shouldn't have bothered reading this nonsense.

AOD9604 is not a performance enhancing drug. End of story. I envisage a large number of people struggling with this after being led by the nose by the media since February.

It's not performance enhancing.

That doesn't matter.

The Code clearly states that :

(Article 2 said:
It is each Athlete’s personal duty to ensure that no Prohibited Substance enters his or her body. Athletes are responsible for any Prohibited Substance or its Metabolites or Markers found to be present in their Samples. Accordingly, it is not necessary that intent, fault, negligence or knowing Use on the Athlete’s part be demonstrated in order to establish an antidoping violation under Article 2.1.

A Prohibited Substance is any item listed on the Prohibited List, regardless of whether or not it is performance enhancing.

Wow, good thing they tested the players and found these substances in their samples right?

Is that because they didn't catch them or that they have already struck a deal with the Bombers not to bring the players into it?

they've been charged with the same fucking rule that the following were charged with.

no one has been charged with anything illegal.

note the only ones being "charged" are AFL employees.

some other times this "rule" has been used

July 1985
Leigh Matthews (Hawthorn)
- Struck Geelong player Neville Bruns behind the play in a game at Princes Park
- Deregistered for four weeks by the VFL Commission for conduct unbecoming of a VFL player

April 2002
Nathan Brown (Western Bulldogs)
- Delivering an insulting gesture to the crowd during game at Docklands (now Etihad Stadium)
- Fined $5000

July 2002
Chad Cornes (Port Adelaide)
- Delivered an insulting gesture to the crowd during match against Fremantle at Subiaco Oval (now Patersons Stadium).
- Fined $3000 under the provisions of the AFL's Rules and Regulations concerning conduct unbecoming or prejudicial to the interests of the AFL.

April 2004
Brisbane Lions
- Sponsorship agreement with Cadbury-Schweppes that potentially impinged on the AFL's agreement with protected sponsor Coca-Cola.
- AFL Commission considered whether the arrangement constituted a breach of the AFL Regulations, or conduct which is unbecoming or likely to prejudice the reputation or interests of the AFL or to bring the game of football into disrepute.
- The club was fined $500,000, with $400,000 of that suspended for three years subject to the Lions adhering to the AFL's marketing guidelines.

August 2005
Grant Thomas (St Kilda coach)
- For comments he made regarding the direction and culture of umpiring.
- Fined $10,000 and given a suspended sanction of $5000 for a previous breach of AFL rule 1.6
- St Kilda also sanctioned $5000 also under AFL Regulation 16.1

November 2007
Ben Cousins
- Drug addiction.
- Deregistered for a year for bringing the game into disrepute after a series of off-field incidents.
- Allowed to re-register for 2009 season subject to a rigorous drug testing program and an appropriate drug and alcohol management program in place at any club he wished to resume his career.

April 2007
AFL Commission met with West Coast in relation to its players' off-field behaviour in April.
- At that meeting the Eagles outlined its initiatives to change the behaviour. They were given conditions to meet and warned they may face conduct unbecoming charges if they appeared before the AFL Commission again with the same issue.

February 2013
Melbourne tanking investigation
- Chris Connolly suspended until February 1, 2014 for acting in a manner concerning pre-game planning, comprising comments to a football department meeting which were prejudicial to the interests of the AFL during the 2009 premiership season.
- Dean Bailey suspended from coaching for the first 16 rounds of 2013 for having regard to Connolly’s comments acted in pre-game planning in a manner, which was prejudicial to the interests of the AFL during the 2009 premiership season.
- The Melbourne Football Club accepted it bore ultimate responsibility for the conduct of the club personnel in key roles, and agreed with the AFL to a fine of $500,000.
- It was found not guilty however of tanking.

In 2004, the AFL Commission considered whether a sponsorship arrangement between the Brisbane Lions and Cadbury-Schweppes constituted a breach of the AFL regulations or conduct unbecoming, as Coca-Cola was a protected AFL sponsor.

I'd say it's disreputable to be injecting players with unknown drugs sourced from Mexico used to help with muscle dystrophy.

That's just me though.

ESSENDON players were to receive 1500 injections of AOD-9604 and Thymosin, according to an AFL charging document seen by the Herald Sun.

The document also states more than 16,500 doses of Colostrum and 8000 doses of Tribulus were planned.

The revelations come as lawyers for Essendon and club officials James Hird, Mark Thompson, Dr Bruce Reid and Danny Corcoran prepare a strong defence to charges they have brought the game into disrepute.

This next 3 weeks of tipping is going to be tough. There are 2 or 3 games this week I reckon could go either way. Watch my meltdown.

Is there one person that isn't a Bombers supporter / official that is actually trying to argue the Bombers have done nothing wrong? Bombers fans are more than willing to push their case - such as in this thread - but I've yet to see one neutral observer that doesn't think what Essendon have done isn't, if not actually against the rules, then at the very least shady as fuck.

No, I agree we've kept shitty books, we've done something that looks very shady.

but until players are charged by ASADA, I see that nothing illegal or against the rules of the game has taken place.

At the moment, most of the passion is directed at the media shit. So many leaks coming from somewhere regarding a report that isn't supposed to be public

edit: let's not forget we have 4 AFL staff being charged wit hthe same rule melbourne got fined with.. even when they ended up being innocent for tanking.

It's not about money... it's about sending a message. Everything burns!

Of course Carlton would go and bugger up my tips.

I really hope they have a bad day against the Dons, need Port to have that 8th (or 7th) place. It's possible, but I don't think we'll beat the Dockers this week. Need a buffer from the Blues.

6 tips down with 2 rounds to go. Something amazing will have to happen from here...

I reckon Port can beat the Blues in the last round and will secure 8th spot.

I won't be celebrating any wins just yet. 2 weeks to go and anything can happen.

Megaton.

The AFL knew in February that ASADA considered AOD as non prohibited in February 2013. Then they let this shit happen for six months.

Bye, Demetrio. Don't forget to charge your own smug arse with bringing the game into disrepute on your way out. Cunt.

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2013-08-20/asada-told-afl-in-february-aod-9604-not-banned/4900852

A member of the AFL's Anti-Doping Tribunal says ASADA had told him that the AOD-9604 anti-obesity drug, central to the supplements saga at AFL club Essendon, was not a banned substance.

The Bombers are under investigation from ASADA regarding their use of supplements in 2012 and skipper Jobe Watson has admitted in a television interview he took what he believed to be AOD-9604, but he felt he had not broken any anti-doping rules.

Sports medicine specialist Andrew Garnham said on Tuesday he had asked ASADA in February 2013 about the status of AOD-9604 in his capacity as a member of the AFL's Anti-Doping Tribunal.

"I was inquiring so there was some clarification as to where the matter might be heading," Dr Garnham told Fox Footy's AFL 360 program.

"The advice that I had at that time was that AOD-9604 was considered under section S2 of the anti-doping code and was regarded as not prohibited.

...

Garnham said he had asked ASADA to clear up some confusion over whether AOD-9604 was a banned substance under Section S0 of the WADA code.

"The advice was it had been considered under S2 (as not prohibited) and therefore effectively S0 did not come into play," he said.

"It had a section to which it belonged and therefore further exploration of those issues was not required."

The AFL and Demetrio definitely haven't handled any of this well at all. No wonder Hird is trying to take him down with him.
