AHA! I finally got my "Official" Gamecube Component cable

BlueTsunami

there is joy in sucking dick
I haven't played any games yet but I plan on playing Wind Waker and Metal Gear Solid: TTS. I got it specifically for Fire Emblem: PoR :D. I hope theres a big difference (like in SotC).

Umm... discuss?

Yes. Who actually has one? I heard that the newer Gamecube models discontinued the Digital Out feature. Also, is the price for the cable itself worth it (for the people who have bought it). I'm going to find out myself a little later.

I've been using the component cable for years. I cannot recall any other way of playing GCN games.

I have one.......well It's actually on sale at ebay but before I decided to sell my cube I LOVED the progressive scan games ( alot of them support pro scan) if you have an hdtv you see a very noticable difference and if not it will still look noticably better than s-video.

Yeah, i've been playing in regular SD. Which I myself can't believe since the Gamecube library is chock full of Progessivley Scanned games. I've been wanting to buy Mario Sunshine...this may throw me over the edge. Widescreen rocks to.

If you have a display that can handle Prog Scan, it's an absolute must. The visual quality via prog scan in phenominal. I hate the 'hold B' thing though, they could have easily made it a bios menu setting.

RE4 looks great with a component cable. I only wish my TV supported progressive scan. I really want to play MP1 and 2 in prog. Maybe sometime down the road.

100% true. Not that analog looks shitty by any means but the first time I played this with the component and widescreen I almost threw up due to the speed.

There's a lot of games that look amazing with GC component.

I recently got an HD-capable 24 inch LCD screen and s-video looks like shit on it. So yeah I went out and bought a PS2 component cable but checking nintendostore, it showed that Gamecube component cables were sold out and weren't being restocked until january. :(

I guess I could get one off ebay... Do 3rd party component cables work just as well?

How much of a hassle is getting a component capable GC from Nintendo? I have my PS2 and Xbox hooked to the HDTV with component... I now cannot even look at GC games through A/V, it's all washed out. I need component capability ASAP.

Anyone in the Seattle area been able to take your Cube directly to them for a replacement? I'd rather not do it in the mail. I know the Nintendo Store in Redmond sells the component cables, so that's not a problem.

Metroid Prime looked great on component the first time I saw it too. I think it was one of the few games I played on both my regular composite connection, and then later on component.

I kind of regret buying the cable. By the time I got it my interest in the Gamecube and games without "Zelda" in the title was like -9000%. I tested my games, said "ooh nice", and that was it.

Is F-Zero GX the only GC game that's widescreen?

What 3rd party component cables? (ie there aren't any 3rd party component cables for the GCN).

Or try Lik-Sang, I don't see anything saying they're sold out.

Soulcalibur II, I-Ninja, SSX3, Super Monkey Ball 2, Star Fox Adventures, Eternal Darkness all support widescreen. There are others but I don't remember off hand.

you only had to do the hold b thing once though right? I don't ever hold down B, and it always asks if I want to run in progressive.

Strange, everytime I load up a game I don't have to hold B it just asks me if I want it on.

they're sold out from nintendostore.com. yeah i checked lik-sang just now and they have them for $34.99.

the 3rd party component cables are just ones i've seen on ebay that are 3-in-1s (i.e. can use PS2/Xbox/Gamecube with them). I have a similar cable like that but with s-video ports instead.

I got mine of Lik-Sang. Also, I don't believe there are 3rd party GameCube component cables. Nintendo I think wants to be the sole maker of the cable (money money money). From Lik-Sang it will throw you back $34 but with shipping it would come out to $40. Thats 10 to like 20 days shipping though...so for 1-3 days (DHL) it will cost you $50 (yep...$20 for 1-3 days shipping). I got the 3 day shipping :(

I haven't used it yet. I'm trying to beat a Colossi in SotC in time trail and its kicking my ass. I will very soon though.

The reason there are so few (or none) 3rd party GC cables is that the cable has a DAC (Digital-Analog) chip at the gamecube end of the cable.

From my vague memory, the digital output doesn't output component, it outputs a RGB signal, that has to be converted to component via this external chip.

You can hack up a GC VGA cable by putting a resistor somewhere on this chip. I forget where to look. Try www.gamesx.com in the forums.

Wow..WindWaker like much nicer. The colors a vibrant and its much sharper, I just wish 16:9 was implimented (with WW). I haven't played it in a while though. I'm trying out MGS:TTS now.

Wow...Metal Gear looks amazing. The real enhancement from Progressive Scan is movement. The way the game looks when looking around and in First Person Vieo looks much better. Also the cinematic scenes.

I have two, one for each Gamecube. It makes a huge difference. I have to switch to S-video to do captures, and it bugs me every time. Composite, which I'm stuck with while travelling once in a while, makes me cry.

I ordered mine off of eBay the day I brought my HD set home. It was a first party cable, but obviously from Japan.

Fooled around with F-Zero and RE4 in zoom mode. F-Zero is killer in progressive wide, as has been professed.

What are you talking about?

I always get asked if I want Progressive Scan activated as well, none of this holding Triangle + X stuff on PS2 or B on Cube.

I have the "Press B to get progressive scan" thing to. I'm wondering if their was revisions in the BIOS with later Gamecubes. Thats probably the case...but I got mine like last year.

That's because you held B the first time. After the first time, it will always ask you. At least, iirc it does.

Mine is a US launch Cube, and I get asked.

For my PS2 (slim), SC2 asked me, but Burnout Revenge needs prompting. I appreciate those rare gems like Primal and GT4 where you can just set this shit in the menu each time.

:lol

Its so convenient. Although, doesn't GT4 require you to set 1080i everytime you play the game? (turn it off then on)

Yes, and I said each time.

I thought Primal was that way too. So you don't boot it up with your mem card on some ancient TV and explode the damn thing.

Shadow of the Colossus and Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex also ask me if I want to run the game in progressive scan every time I boot them up.

If anybody wants me to get them the official cables from the Nintendo Service Center, just send me a PM. It'll come to about $35 or so.

Yeah, that's how it works. Once you've held B once, you don't have to hold it again--it'll always ask you (and default to yes if you don't press anything for a few seconds). But if you choose No, or use it with composite or S-video once, then you'll have to hold B again the next time.

are these difficult to get hold of? I'm in the UK and just upgraded my TV. Won't play many games, but I haven't played much RE4 so might be worth itjust for that.

Also, is PS2 component worth getting? Again, don't play so many games on that these days, but SotC will be one (although might have to wait for PAL release)

Don't waste your time (and money) with 3rd party component cables.

Oh, cool! So does it save it in the individual game save, or on the actual BIOS? IE do I need to hold B with each game once?

I never understood people waiting for a back-ordered US component cable. You would have had it a long time ago if you just imported.

Once you've set one game to progressive, all progressive-capable games will give the prompt.

Many EA games support widescreen too, especially EA Sports Big titles.

That's awesome, though a little pointless considering that I don't believe any of the minority of progressive GCN games go over 480P.
If there were some actual HD titles I could see it.

So I think I'll buy it anyway.

Yeah, games looked terrific on the component cable, it made much more of a difference than with my other consoles. Mario Sunshine, in particular, looked fantastic. Too bad the game wasn't all that fun.

Hopefully I can use my Gamecube component cable with the REV right?

Nintendo likes to make hardware backwards compatible, AFAK you can use a SNES cable on the GC if you wanted to.
