Air purification

My room is really dusty. It's a pretty standard sized bedroom, I have my bed, fairly big computer desk, bookshelf with a good amount of space to move around in.

To give you an idea of how dusty it gets, after wiping my desk clean you will see a thin layer of dust and a few dust bunnies after 2-3 weeks. I usually have my door closed, my computer is on 24/7 with three case fans blowing (two rear, one front, monitor in suspend mode).

With that in mind, I'm looking at some kind of air purification system for my room but I have no idea what to look for. I do want a good unit, with cheap filters. Looking to spend less than $500 CAD. Information and recommendations would be appreciated.

Most of the dust in homes comes from human dander meaning you and me. I'm guessing you spend a lot of time in your room with all that dust you accumulate. I use sharper images ionic breeze it comes with a handwashable filter so in the long run you save a bunch of money because you dont need to buy filters, plus it's whisper quiet.

heres a link to epinions review of the inoc breeze:

I do spend a lot of time in my room. but I wash my clothes and bedsheets pretty regularly. Most of the dust is near the computer due to the fans there.

I'm lazy so I want to know if you've tried to vaccuum the grill clean?
Also, do you store it in a central location or the most dusty location?

The no filters thing sounds nice but the ozone can't be good for long term... I wonder if that is a necessary by-product of purifiers?

My wife and I live in a three room apartment with three ferrets. It gets dusty weekly. One of these things may be just what we need.

The ionic breeze is whisper quiet, and it does not overheat as it only uses 10 watts of energy, I leave it on 24/7

1. I use a paper towel to wipe the collection grill clean takes about 3 minutes to clean, you cant vacuum the collection grills because of it's shape.

2. I set it on the floor and dont move it.

3. The ozone emissions are a by product of the ionic breeze which uses charged ions to push air through the collection grills which is why it's whisper quiet. You do bring up a good point abou the ozone emmisons although the ozone emissions are within federal saftey guidelines if you have any reservations at all about ozone emissions I wouldn't reccomend it for you.

I used to have a HEPA it is very loud plus replacement filters are very expensive, but I dont think they emit ozone emissions.

Oh, I forgot to ask the most important thing. Is there actually less dust in your room since using it?

I use a Honeywell Quietcare and it doesn't do a good job at keeping stuff from getting dusty. It sucks in A LOT of air, but it needs to blow out the clean air just as fast so it kicks around any dust in the room around, which then settles on my bookcases. The only way to really keep dust out is either buying a couple of these things arranged around the room or have the clean air ventilated out of the room (as in, pointing the exhaust port out a window or door).

I can't imagine how something like an Ionic Breeze doing a good job at keeping things dust free either, because it has very little suction and still has to blow out air.

BTW, I keep it in front of my TV stand where i have all my consoles. It only keeps those things from having to be dusted regularly whereas the rest of my room seems to get dustier.

Yeah, I'm living in a one bedroom apartment with my girlfriend and two cats. The hair and the dust builds up in less than a week and drives me freaking insane. Sometimes I'll just sit there and look at the hair in the corners and the layer of dust covering every surface and shudder. I so need to look into these...

Does anyone here have experience with the Oreck XL? I'm looking into getting an air purifier and this is the one I'm currently looking at.

I can't make a specific recommendation, but I will recommend that you definitely don't buy an Ionic Breeze. I have one, and it's certainly quiet, but according to Consumer Reports testing, it doesn't do shit. They tested a whole bunch of air filters, and were shocked to find that the Ionic Breeze was off the charts-- the bottom of the charts. Everything else could mostly clear a room full of dust and smoke in about half an hour, while the Ionic Breeze had barely any effect at all.

That's one of the things that Sharper Image talks about in their advertising materials for the Ionic Breeze. It's much slower than other filters, because it's so low power. But you're supposed to leave it on 24 hours a day, since it's absolutely silent. Any of the filters with fans and stuff make noise and probably only run intermittently.

I just go over everything with a feather duster, with a fan blowing from one side of the room out the window... and there are filters at every major junction of the central A/C.

Yeah it sounded like a good idea with the fancy ions and stuff but I had a feeling it wouldn't work well.

I was gonna start a new thread, but thanks to a search, I found this one. So...

I just moved into an apartment with three cats and even though I'm keeping my door closed at all times, I know cat hair is going to get inside eventually. So I'm looking for one; the bedroom is about 13 X 14 feet and I don't want to spend too much money. Do I have many options?

Any air filter is only as good as the amount of air it can suck in, and how good a filter is inside. But they're not invincible, and they will never, ever replace good housekeeping. In addition to all of the crap you take out of the filters, you're still going to need to vacuum on occasion to get stuff that either escapes the filter, or was never pulled in.

The last thing you should ever do is believe the commercials designed to sell you these things. They play on your fears of getting sick from particulates that exist, mostly, because we exist. Try to find some good, reasonable reviews that rate performance instead.

Well can you, or anyone else, point to any good sources? I have no clue where to start, so anything would be greatly appreciated.

And just for the record, I'm not expecting this to do any work for me. I just want something to compliment all the sweeping I intend on doing anyway. Thankfully, there's no smell, so I don't need anything for that.
