Alan Wake 2 Gameplay Revealed + New Details | Summer Game Fest 2023

Calm Down Al Pacino GIF

This was aimed at those that only wanted to play as Alan, they would get 50% of the story because playing as a black woman is too woke for them.

Not to mention it makes total sense she and her partner are there.

Alan: Okay, I can try to get out of this hellhole by myself, but I can also write things and events basically into existence. Got it, I'll manipulate the story to have two FBI Agents show up so they can possibly help me!
The supposed "fans" of Alan Wake: I don't get it, why is this new character playable?!

Like, they're essentially asking Alan to be stupid and arrogant and try to escape without utilizing essentially free help.

It has that TLOU2/RE2 type of intensity and I'm all for it. But that battery mechanic though..... Oooooohhhhh nooo.

That's what it looks like. Why are fanboys complaining?
They're complaining because it looks like a Resident Evil game, not an Alan Wake game, obviously. Even the two character thing I guess is taken from RE.

I mean I love RE but Alan Wake's combat was more about movement and dodging in larger open spaces (hence why the subsequent Control played the way it did).

This appears to be that RE style walk, plant your feet, take pot shots type gameplay. If there's a contrast in the gameplay styles between the two characters that could potentially be cool, but I doubt that will be the case.

So yeah, surprisingly people wanted a sequel to Alan Wake after 13 years, and so far all they're showing at the moment is a game that's not Alan Wake, but an RE clone with a different character.

So people wanted more dated mediocrity rather than something better?

The new Alan Wake 2 footage looks a lot better than the original to me

People wanted a game that was a sequel to Alan Wake. Alan Wake was about running away desperately and gunning where you could, so maybe something more within that gameplay philosophy might have made more sense?

For example, the dodge mechanic in the original game is still great and the original definitely had a good base to build a modern combat loop on (even if it did overstay its welcome due to the games excessive padding.

But to be honest, until we see more of the game we can't really say how the game truly plays, but the little they have shown has deflated my hype a bit.

While i agree with the points you made i don't think AW greatest strength was the combat, while it was fun.. the more important thing to me is the atmosphere and story and AW2 looks great in that department, also the combat looks fun and we didn't see much of it to fully judge.

I'm pleased with what they've shown.

We should remember what Alan Wake II could've been had they released the sequel they once worked on. I'm sure I would've loved it, but I think this new game will be better. I only have a little concern about the Saga/Alan split and how it will work and possibly disturb the flow of the story.

Holy shit, I never saw this. I would take this over what we have seen so far with AW2. Now I am sad!

This was one of my favorites from the show last night. I loved the first AW and this one looks like they maybe made the combat a little better. I guess it makes sense that each of their last three games have had gun combat, and at least two of them (Control and Quantum Break) had interesting combat mechanics, that this game would have better combat than the first one. Definitely putting this game on my shortlist.

are there any 4K/60 videos on this? Too much artifacts in 1080p to appreciate that foliage and lighting.

It will be interesting to see if the combat feels as interesting after Quantum break and Control which had some pretty interesting abilities added into the combat. I will be there day one regardless, Remedy is one of my favorite developers.

Yep, not loving that, but it's Remedy and I trust them. MP2 is one of my favorite games and I even enjoyed Quantum Break, so I'll definitely be trying this out.
I know, I can't believe Remedy forced us to play as a woman in some parts of Max Payne 2, it's called MAX PAYNE, not MONA SAX!

I love Alan Wake, but I was kinda underwhelmed by this demo

They are making it a survivor horror game, with a camera that's closer to the character, so obviously I'm going to compare it to RE 2/3/4

Saga's animations didnt look as good as something that you'll see in the REmakes (aiming, running, shooting and dodging)

I loved the look and feel of the flashlight mechanic in the original game, and here its barely there. The volumetric lighting and the effects on the screen on the original looked amazing. In here you barely notice that the flashlight is being used against the enemy.

And I get it that the closer camera is there to build tension, since its a survivor game and all, but I preffer the more distant one in the original that let you get a good look of the surroundings.

It makes sense in REmakes, since they dont have huge open spaces (RE 4 is semi open world, but consisted of mostly corridors), but Alan Wake had some pretty big areas to explore, so a closer camera may not work as good? We will see

Precisely! 1

You noticed that too, huh, with the lighting? The original Alan Wake's lighting was ahead of its time. Now it's barely even noticeable.

I really hope I enjoy this game, but something tells me it'll feel too different from the original.

the player for some reason didn't bother going for headshots until the very last shot. Not sure how bullet spongey it really is without knowing how effective center mass shots are.

It also could have been a stronger enemy type or boss/mini-boss. But if the change from AW -> AW2 is fewer, stronger enemies but with the same loop, I'm not terribly interested. That loop quickly became tedious in the original.

alan wake 1 was one of the last games i played on a CRT.

hopefully they go hard with next-gen lighting on PC-- it'll really pop in a dark forest + OLED.

Yo, that gameplay looks great! The tone is much more serious AND ACTUALLY SCARY than anything from Alan Wake 1--I hope that's what they go for for most of the game.

Edit: I see now Remedy is calling it survival horror. Probably action survival horror in practice, which just happens to be my favorite action genre. Sweet!

Remedy is long gone.
Control was shit aside from cool destruction but again. It's just rigid objects. nothing fancy
Remedy is long gone? Sam Lake is the only face/name I know, and he presented AW2. For me, Quantum Break & Control weren't Max Payne, but I enjoyed them. Quantum Break I enjoyed even more my second time playing it this year after first playing it upon release.

What makes you say they're long gone?

Epic exclusivity money. They almost own them.
And no. I don;t think QB or Control were good at all
