Alan Wake 2 Gameplay Revealed + New Details | Summer Game Fest 2023

What they showed was just a small snippet, not the whole game.
Yes I am worried why they picked this snippet my friends I hope they make Alan Wakes like it weres surposed to bees when it was the open world prototype days before the first ones

it don't looks like they got rid of that crud dodge eithers

It looks fantastic. I love me some slow burn survival horror. That dodge mechanic looks great too.

Only complaint is 50% of the game being spent as some rando. I want to play as Alan Wake. Not some cop. It was annoying in TLOU2 too. I just wanted to spend the entire game as Ellie and/or Joel.

well it seems like you can, after the intro chapter, switch to Alan and play the whole story from only his perspective... and then if you want switch to her and do her's.
this sounds almost like a more dynamic/more robust version of the 2 character scenarios in RE2

I think graphically it looks damn good. On the level of Callisto Protocol. Hopefully better than Callisto when its seen in person. Better than the Resi Evil remakes. Probably won't look this good in performance mode tho which sucks. There might be some survival horror/3rd person up-close camera burnout tho amongst gamers tho.
Man, I disagree, the game looks fine, nice modeled characters and I like the post-processing on the game. Specular lighting on thin objects have a lot of shimmering which indicates the game might be having trouble to upscale from a lower native resolution and the grass is rough in some places. The environments are fine but in the same level of a lot of PS4/XBO games. Callisto Protocol has amazing skin rendering and the models are on a totally different level IMHO.

I definitely need to see a better quality footage to better judge this one. Remedy is a talented Studio, Control is still amazing to this day, I have faith they will deliver on the visual front but so far the game needs polish, or maybe I need to see better footage 🤣

For a lot of people, myself included, Max Payne 2 is the pinnacle of Remedy's development efforts and everything they've released since has fallen far short of that greatness.
I would disagree. I think Alan Wake and Control were both excellent and can stand with Max Payne 2. Quantum Break had issues though so I agree it was a bit of a let down, though I still had a great time playing it.

Quantum Break was really interesting in that it was the one that went the most full bore into narration/storytelling but to me had the most forgettable story and characters.

Gameplay looked meh, but the rest looks aces. If it reviews well and I'm done with Baldurs Gate 3, Armored Core 6, Blasphemous 2, and Starfield I'll pick it up….

I'm a big fan of the QB story myself. I think it was one of the more interesting stories of the last generation.

Okay, this is going to be a bit long, so please bear with me...

AW 2 certainly looks novel, from anything else out there, which is Remedy's MO - they make unique games, with unique gameplay mechanics and Sam is easily one of the best story-tellers/writers in the industry, and has been for years- he's that good! And while this looks interesting, I have to say that I'm one of those people who thinks peak Remedy was Max Payne 2, and I know this is very subjective, but allow me to explain why...

Alan Wake - a true psychological thriller with an amazing story, setting/mood and interesting combat mechanic. The music, story and haunting mood/setting/lighting Remedy was able to create were perfect! But the perfection stops there. The writing, in my opinion, wasn't up to Sam's standard. By that I mean, everyone was perfectly written, except the protagonist and his wife. How do you write your lead character poorly? Barry was probably the best written character in the game, but the best written character, ideally, should be Alan Wake. Also, the pacing started to suffer in the latter half of the game, but by no means was that the biggest issue. The two big issues that stopped Alan Wake from being perfect are the combat (it really got monotonous after a while), and Alan Wake himself - he just wasn't a very likeable character. I honestly don't think anyone played AW and thought he was cool, or likeable. In fact, sometimes he came off as a bit of a prick. He couldn't connect with the player, at least for me. And I've heard many others echo the same sentiment.

Quantum Break - Incredible combat and incredible combat moments, superb story, excellent characters, too notch music, visual spectacle. These are all the things Remedy nailed, perfectly! But, they fell short with something that took away from the enjoyment of the game - the fucking emails! Yes, it's optional, but to really get the full story, reading the emails are essential. The problem is, they're oftentimes too long, and too frequent. It interupts the pacing, terribly. The time-knife email was perfect and comical, but everything else was a nuisance. Trying to gain more story elements that way quickly turned into a chore...a boring chore. The final battle was also a painstaking, unimaginative chore. While QB has its strides, it has some small blunders that really turns the game from near perfect to just...good enough. I haven't even gotten to the TV show yet. It was a novel idea, and while I enjoyed it, I can completely understand why/how others didn't. It was simply just another thing that, instead of really adding to the game, players could have done without.

Control - Story, mood, music, combat - all near perfect, but Control felt hollow, compared to all of Remedy's previous efforts. The weapon upgrades / parts and menus were a cluttered mess, it suffered from the Quantum Break notes/emails to help flesh out story (although it was much better implemented than in QB), and the protagonist, like Alan Wake, wasn't that likeable. The combat was good...really good, but still felt...I don't know. It just wasn't as satisfying as it should have been.

Which leads me to Alan Wake 2 - From what I've seen here, the combat doesn't seem that refined compared to the first game, and can easily suffer from being repetitive, again. In addition to that, Alan is back. Great, the story is about Alan. But, is he less of a douche now? Is Alan Wake likeable now? That's yet to be determined. The lighting in AW 1 was ahead of its time, and really helped with the mood/setting of the game. I don't see that here. The nearer camera and change in the flashlight makes the game feel very different. It now veers away from psychological thriller and seems like a full-on detective survival horror. Personally, I'm not a huge fan of survival horrors (few games do it right). It seems that Remedy has removed some of the elements that made Alan Wake enjoyable, while retaining everything that made it unenjoyable. Lastly, graphically, it leaves a lot to be desired. I'm actually surprised it looks so...bland. Don't get me wrong; it's not bad at all. But I'd think on next-gen hardware, Remedy would have a better looking game. Even Quantum Break looks better, or comparable. QB is 6 years old, at this point...

Based on everything I said above, there are some strong common themes/trends here - Remedy are master story-tellers, and know how to build worlds, settings and understand the importance of great sound design, scoring and music selection. They falter in almost everything else.

Which brings me to Max Payne 2 - Pioneering action with bullet-time, excellent pacing and story delivery system, top notch mood/setting with the noir style, excellent music and sound design, excellent characters (All of them!), loveable protagonist that everyone was rooting for, no weird story elements that detract from the pacing of the game, impeccable writing for every character...and although Max Payne's combat is the most simple of all Remedy's games, it just works the best and never felt repetitive. By all accounts, Max Payne was fucking perfect! Max Payne 2 gave us all the improvements we needed for a sequel, outdoing the perfection that was Max Payne 1.

Remedy has made bigger games than Max Payne 1 & 2. They've had more epic scores. Higher production value. More interesting combat elements. Better graphics. And yet, they still haven't made a game that nails every aspect that makes a perfect game, perfect.

And to be honest, if I never played Max Payne, maybe their later titles might have more sway for me. But, it's evident they set an extremely high bar when they made Max Payne, and they're yet to top it. Maybe it's because many of the original team are gone. Sam's still there, and he's the main person responsible for a lot of the creative decisions, but I really have to wonder if there was anyone else, or a group of people who contributed in such a way, as to make their earlier games more... balanced (for lack of a better term)?

Remedy doesn't make bad games; they make great games, but none of their games are as great as Max Payne.

I think the game looks great but I worry about this too. The price being so low means something, but what?
That means that they dont have to spend money at producing bluray disk, packings, transportcost, and distributions to stores all over the world....when you use your brain you figger that out by your self😉

Hum, did I undertand correctly that some objects aren't interactive/pickable until you unlock them through the story? That sucks. Like, that ashtray over there in the cabin was just part of scenery since the begining until you reach Act 3 where you're gonna need it as a clue. Meh.

The rhetoric that digital versions can be cheaper because you don't have to manufacture and distribute physical copies has died not long after the first introduction of digital storefronts. It's bs. In fact you can buy many games cheaper in physical form rather than digital and I'm not only talking about used copies. Plus in Alan Wake's case it's not actually cheaper in my opinion. They're offering it at 60€ on the consoles and it's still the price that's frequently used for a full-priced title, because not everyone has moved on to charging 70€ (or 80€).

As for whether it's worth the risk to manufacture disc copies... there are tons of much smaller games being released in physical form, including indie titles like Dredge. There's no obstacle here in offering the players a choice between retail & digital, you just need to be willing to give that choice. Even if you're worried about the game flopping you can find a good publisher (like THQ Nordic has offered to help out) or simply manufacture less copies. You don't have to drop the idea altogether.

They want to sell this to a wider audience

Having low key combat won't fly today
I don't quite this though? This looks far more low key combat wise than the original no?

Alan Wake was far more action packed than any of the REmakes outside of maybe 4make, but this game doesn't look like that at all.

Not to mention it makes total sense she and her partner are there.

Alan: Okay, I can try to get out of this hellhole by myself, but I can also write things and events basically into existence. Got it, I'll manipulate the story to have two FBI Agents show up so they can possibly help me!
The supposed "fans" of Alan Wake: I don't get it, why is this new character playable?!

Like, they're essentially asking Alan to be stupid and arrogant and try to escape without utilizing essentially free help.

Shame Facepalm GIF by MOODMAN

Yeah well you see, Alan Wake was always a rambo like character, getting help from a WOMAN would diminish his big dick energy.

Great post but I completely disagree on characters Alan Wake and Jesse Faden were far more interesting than Max Payne. Maybe it's because I have read a lot of Noir literature and 1930's detective novels but Max Payne comes off as a caricature of those detectives. I love Max Payne but he feels like a homage to those detectives rather than an original character to me.

Quantum Break characters just never landed for me, I can't remember anyone's name or really much other than the overall story arc.

I didn't say the characters were not interesting, I said they weren't likeable. Maybe it's just me (though I know many others share that sentiment), but I do not care for Jesse or Alan; I really don't care about them. I care about where the story goes. What happens next. How does this end? Sure, I care about all of those things. But I feel nothing for those two characters.

I think everyone loves Max, and can identify with him or his darkness. Just a guy trying to save his family, or take down the people who destroyed his life. Simple, but it works. His monologues and narration were stellar. His voice (hearing the voice actor again in Control was so nostalgic), his presence, everything. Max has that lone-wolf action hero thing going for him, much like Bruce Willis in Die Hard. Except, his much better written than Bruce Willis in Die Hard.

If you haven't played Max Payne recently, go look at some of the panel style cut-scenes and the dialogue on YouTube. It's absolutely impeccably written. And here's the thing, Max isn't a writer. He's a detective, but has a much more poetic and philosophical way of expressing his thoughts than the writer, Alan Wake. Alan's story is more complex and more interesting; same for Jesse, same for Jack in Quantum Break. And they're nowhere near as likeable as Max.

I honestly don't think people were rooting for Jesse, Wake or Joyce; we were just there for the ride, eager to see where this story unfolds... How their saga ends. While we also wanted to see Max's story through, I know people were rooting for Max. I actually felt for Max. I felt his pain, through the story. I felt like how Max felt, which made killing everyone in his part much more satisfying. I've never felt how Jesse feels, or how Joyce felt, or how Alan felt. I was just there to see their story through; I had no real connection with those other characters.

Again, maybe this isn't the general consensus and I'm only speaking for myself. In which case, that's just how I feel.

Great response thanks for the discussion

I have really good feelings about this game. And it comes this October if anything goes as planned, they might delay it, though.

Yeah love the look and tone they've gone for, hopefully it's well written and you know Remedy are good at shooting mechanics at least so I'm looking forward to it.

This is that game that's not releasing on physical disc so if we don't like it or when we're bored with it we can't sell it and help both ourself and someone else who wants a pre-owned copy, right?

Ended up upgrading my PC for this and starfield (really more for this) not gonna buy digital on console so it needed to be done. Hopefully they deliver
