Alanah Pearce: "The Game Awards is bulllshit. It's a popularity contest"

Alanah Pearce, influencer and writer at Santa Monica Studio recently gave her opinion on The Game Awards. According to her, the show is nothing more than a popularity contest.
The Game Awards is an international popularity competition and is generally reflected in the votes in terms of the games with the biggest marketing budget being the games that are nominated for Game of the Year. There are undoubtedly games that I personally would have nominated that would never make the cut.

Even if I were at IGN and said, "I think Dredge should be nominated for game of the year," which I do, there's no chance of that coming out of IGN because there wouldn't be enough people in the office who would have played the game. They will play the games with the most marketing because those are the games they know.

Most normal humans don't actually give a shit about the "Game of the Year" VGA's and all that stuff. They just want the sweet sweet trailers and announcements. What she's talking about is pretty much universal in almost all artistic mediums.

I do feel that BG3 kinda throws a wrench in the whole thing, as it's not nearly in a genre that's super popular; CRPG's are relatively niche these days in the console spaces, so having one be such a landslide achievement having flown under the radar for so long flies in the face of the "popularity contest" idea.

She's right, but I also feel like Geoff's video game awards never felt like "the real deal". It doesn't feel like it's THE show where you get the award that truly cements your standing the same way it works in the film industry. It feels like a side thing, because you already receive "Game of the year" awards from hundreds of outlets even ignoring this show. Refer to this pic:

Red Dead Redemption 2 (somehow) lost the Goty award against GoW in 2018 but...why does that matter when it has 175 of them? Same goes for every other category.

The only thing it's good for are new trailers and even then it's more miss than hit.

Statement just implies she will vote for whatever the majority of the office she works at votes for. And I wager if it was a Santa Monica Studios game they would be forced to vote for it just cuz.

She is right though. It's just a popularity contest. Then again everyone knows that.

Although Red Dead 2 is an amazing game, the general consensus that year was GOW 2018 was more fun to play. Both games had great graphics, voice acting, music, writing, etc. I just remember the main complaint other people had for RDR2 was the sluggish controls.

That video is so difficult to watch. It's a million clips if this girl cobbled together, and I don't understand why.

Also, way too long to explain something so trivial and stupid. 🤣

It has been like that since it's inception. It was the only way for the awards show to gain popularity and ads. If it featured actual indies no one would tune in because of the niche market they make up unfortunately. I'd love to see actual game diversity and not just "oh what's the top sellers this year?"
Would!…what is the topic again because all I can see is boobs
Are we that incapable of actually having decent conversations in an Alanah Pearce video before "oh my god her tits guys did you see her tits wowee!" Come the fuck on people, go to bloody pornhub if you are that desperate.

If it was down to biggest marketing budget then why wasn't Starfield nominated?

She has been pushing Starfield hard in her streams so this sounds a little like sour grapes even if I agree that the awards are flawed. But I don't think they necessarily got the game of the year nominations wrong this year either.

Shes right. Nobody cares. We just wanna see the trailers. Now that E3 is dead this is the next best thing. They took the customary e3 cringe and crystalized it into it’s pure form by having industry types jerk each other off on stage and give longwinded speeches.

Reasonably attractive female talking about popularity contest...

Fuck off
What does her gender have to do with the nomination process?

It doesn't imply that in any way. It implies the exact opposite (that people at IGN wouldn't vote for the games she would vote for).

Then she should vote for the games she likes. She doesn't even need to bring up IGN at all.

She would vote for games she likes. She's saying she would vote for Dredge, but she doesn't think enough people would have played it for it to be nominated.
