Every time I take a trip up to see my sister and brother-in-law, my brother-in-law makes me try a bunch of different alcoholic beverages.
I've tested all of his import beer and it all tastes like garbage water.
I've tried all of his wine (red, white, sweet, strong) and it all burns and tastes like nasty communion.
I've even tried port... It's like thick, burning garbage water.

How long did it take you all to get used to this stuff and why would ANYONE prefer this to fruit juice or a soft drink?

How long? Hmmm.. I'd say about half a second, the time it took from the moment the wine was still in the glass to the moment it hit my tongue.

It's definitely an acquired taste for many people...if you're only going to drink it on occasional trips to your sister's, you'll probably never prefer it to fruit drinks or even water.

I drink mostly mixed drinks when I'm out, and shit like Smirnoff Triple Black when I'm just at home or hanging with friends.
Mostly because they taste fucking good and give a bit of a buzz.

Get some schnapps.

It is an aquired taste. The only beer I can tolerate is rolling rock. I like mike hard lemonade, and cocktails like purple haze.

I just don't understand why people bother to acquire a taste for something that tastes like rubbish to begin with. I might try to drink wine more often.

Well, for a good many of them, the main objective is the effects of drinking of the alcohol -- acquiring the taste for it is more of a secondary side-effect.

However, as with many foods that you don't immediately like, sometimes acquiring a taste for it allows you to broaden your culinary horizons and appreciate tastes you wouldn't have before. Being something of a wine expert will also look mighty impressive at a business meeting or a higher-class social function, if you're into that sort of thing.

Kahlua, and Baileys Irish Cream both taste really good.
You can also mix fruit juice or soda with a liquor (vodka, rum), or even drink champagne.

If you still don't like the taste, don't think about it. It's the means to an end.

i think i was 17 when i finally started to enjoy alcohol. right now, though, the shiner bock i gulped down last night is giving me a hurtin'...

I suppose that's right, though I wish it wasn't the case. I think that's the reason I'm trying to like some wine, even though it all tastes pretty bad.

I don't think there's a chance I'll ever enjoy a beer, however.

:lol :lol

Depends what the drink is...beer took me a few tries. I still hate rum. Vodka is ok, depending on what you mix it with. I can shoot it, but I prefer not too.
You'll get to the point where you barely taste anything after the first few drinks anyway.

And if you want some GOOD shit, I've been on a kick of this lately:

It's 86 proof and tastes like cinnamon. You don't even need a chaser when you shoot it. It's mag-fucking-nificent. And there's gold shavings floating around the drink...how can you go wrong?

No, but you suggest facial creams to other men.

For the record I don't like beer either, but do enjoy a good mixed drink, whiskey or some Jaeger.

Try some mixed drinks.

I like to drink Kamikazes, Shakes with Kahula/Rum, Strawberry Daiquiris, Flaming Dr. Peppers... etc. Of course, I'll do straight shots of vodka too. Look up some mixed drinks and see what you like.

That's uncalled for.

Yes, alcohol has a strong taste, so picking your drink carefully is important. If you want to learn how to drink beer, it's probably a good idea to start with a fairly weak-tasting beer...American domestic beer (unfortunately) is a good place to start. Wine is also fairly strong -- I don't care for red wine unless it's with dinner, but white wine is considerably lighter.

Mixed drinks are definitely the way to go. If you like soda, try a rum and Coke -- rum is distilled from sugar, and you probably know what Coke tastes like. As you get more comfortable with it, you can add more rum to get used to the alcohol taste, and also try mixing rum with other stuff. Vodka doesn't have much of a taste when mixed with strong fruit juices. Tequila is fine in margaritas, but doing shots of it will grow hair on you in a hurry.

The other thing is that you just may not like to drink, which is more than fine. Just tell them "no thank you" and stick to stuff you like.

Eminem: I love that cinammon stuff. It was about the only thing I could stomach when I was a young lad curious about alcohol.

Add vodka to your favoured fruit juice or soft drink.

haha, see, i was never a fan of stuff like schnapps or anything like that...but 2 weekends ago me and my brother were drinking Skol(the WORST vodka known to man. it tastes like rat poisen. the logo should be a skull and crossbones.) because it was $8 for a handle. And halfway through the bottle we said fuck this, we can't drink this anymore. One of my friends recommended Goldschlager, so we said what the hell and got a fifth. Now I absolutely love the stuff.

Moral of the story?

I wouldn't have thought someone could mess vodka up that bad, but I'll take your word for it -- thanks for the heads-up (although it's rare that I drink these days anyhow). I guess there's a reason why it was only $8.

Non of these will ever be preferrable to juice as a tasty drink.
People drink these just to get hammered.
It's not so bad once you get past the taste.

After drinking it at every Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner through my childhood, I started liking wine when I was 20. I still can't stand beer, but there are plenty of other drinks (of the Bacardi/Mike's Hard Lemonade variety) that are appealing instantly, because they're loaded down with sugar.

Well if you arent gonna drink it to get tore up I dont see the point in drinking it. Cuz yes alchohol makes everything taste worse. If you arent gonna get drunk you might as well not drink booze.

WORD!
I know lots of people who don't drink to get drunk. I don't know why anybody would do something that stupid in the first place.

I know people who drink wine to accent meals and people who drink just one beer while watching football games.

Know anyone who likes a vegatable that you don't like? Its like that. I happen to enjoy the taste of beer. I will have one or two and be fine, not drunk ot even buzzed, but I can still enjoy the taste.

I don't like wine at all, but I can still see how people might enjoy a glass of that without getting drunk.

As for hard liquor? That's the stuff you wanna stay away from if you're not looking to get sloppy ;) And I think Vodka Gatorade is a great combo. Also, Vodka Red Bull. And I don't even like vodka :lol

You don't have to get drunk to get a nice buzz. It can certainly liven up conversation.

hmm, i mixed with strawberry kiwi gatorade....perhaps the wrong flavor?

and vodka/red bull can make your heart explode, or something. one's a depressant, the other increases your heart rate, or something like that. i dunno. don't really care.

shitting in the alley outside your window
The first time I ever drank, I was 22 and sat down with a bottle of Grey Goose vodka. I was quickly attached to it (thanks to the effects), but it took me a long time to come around to beer. Everytime I tried it, I hated it. After going to bars repeatedly with friends, I began to find a few beers that I could stomach and enjoy. I've tried a ton of different beers and my 'enjoy' list is still very small (Killians topping the list, followed by Coors Lite, Miller Lite and the occasional Guiness)

Liquor and Wine are still my a choices for any occassion.

needs to show more effort.
I too have never understood people liking alchoholic drinks (the taste that is) I can understand wanting to get drunk. But under the assumption that you don't care about getting drunk, I see no reason to drink alchohol.

I find most of the stuff terribly nasty and I don't feel compelled to get drunk. So the only things I can tolerate are weak-moderate mixed drinks. At which point to actual start feeling the effects of alchohol I would have to consume more liquid at a faster pace than I would be able to while still enjoing myself.

So if everyone around me is drinking I'll have a rum and coke or something just to avoid having to answer questions about not liking alchohol but really, if your not getting drunk a rum and coke is little more than a slightly nasty but still tolerable regular coke.

It can make you feel as if your heart will explode, then again amphetamines has a similar effect.
The interesting thing about vodka/red bull(and I mean the Thai stuff, not the Western knockoff), is that you try your best to carry out a conversation, but you don't actually say any words, just babble.

I didn't like beer the first time I tried it. Now I can't get enough of beer -- all beer. I love imports, domestics, dark, light you name it I love to try it.l

I think I enjoyed wine right away cause there's a lot of sweet wines which taste very good. That and the fact that my dad makes wine and there was a constant supply at home, I started drinking it VERY EARLY on in life.

Liqueurs are easy to drink, the sweet aspect again..

The only thing I've never really gotten into is the hard liquor like whiskey and such. I can take a martini from time to time but that's about it.

Huh? Alcohol makes everything taste worse? There's courses you can take to appreciate which wines to have with certain meals to actually ENHANCE the meal not detract from it. This is quite a blanket statement from you which millions would disagree with. It's just your opinion.

i wish I could drink beer but its just so dry and bitter tasting. I'm supposed to go out to a get-together tonight and they'll be drinking beer and I'll be there with my coke. People tell me i haven't drank enough of it - I have! I can't drink anymore of I'll get a sick feeling.

I think Most beer and wine taste like crap too, but i love Gin and Tonics. It tastes like sprite and you can either down it real quick or sip on it for a while.

Its like the perfect drink. Nothing better than having it on the rocks with a Lime
