I hear Alfonso Cuaron ('Gravity', 'HP/Azkaban') deep in talks to direct JK Rowling's Harry Potter spinoff 'Fantastic Beasts'. Perfect pick.

So, what do we reckon? Will a guy fresh off a Best Director Oscar really take the Warner Bros dollar for a Harry Potter spinoff? I mean, I know he did Prisoner of Azkaban, but at this point in his career?

Still, extremely excited if it does turn out to be true. Prisoner of Azkaban was the best Potter movie by approximately a billion miles.

I think he could do a pretty good job, just please don't get any of the directors from Goblet of Fire and on. Those movies slaughtered the books. The first three really adapted the books so well.

The only thing that bugged me about Azkaban, was how the school just transformed. It was a completely different environment from the first two movies. It was so hard to get into since my view of Hogwarts always matched and still matches what the first two movies did.

i hoped gravity's success would give him free reign to do original ideas with a budget in a sea of sequels, reboots, franchises etc

but this would still be cool, he really gets the universe

Does Fantastic Beasts... even have a plot? Sirius question

The movies are based on the book in the universe. Not the little book that we actually got. It's based on the adventures of Newt Scamander and what led to him writing the Fantastic Beasts book inside the Harry Potter universe.

Stranger things have happened. I just find it hard to believe that this is what he'd want to do next. Gravity would have given him a lot of room to take on pretty much anything as his next project.

Given she's supposed to have married his grandson after the book series ends, they need to get Luna Lovegood back as the only returning HP character, for some present day framing scenes.

Yeah, Cuaron's PoA was easily the best one, while Yates's insipid trash were the worst movies of the bunch.

Not sure if this is what I want Cuaron to seek out after Gravity, but hell, go get paid buddy.

Cuaron returning for a Harry Potter universe story that has none of the baggage and can just explore the universe and depict all the crazy shit in it would be FUCKING AMAZING

That would be amazing. I watched every Harry Potter movie because I loved the books but his was the only one that I really liked.

Nope and it doesn't need to. It's all about the monsters in the Harry Potter universe, which means that pretty much anything can be done with it.

:(

I couldn't care less about Harry Potter. Cuaron should be doing something for more interesting.

Wow... People actually think Prisoner of Azkaban is the best Harry Potter movie? Everyone i know, including myself, hate it. Does the book no justice, since the book was by far the best in the series.

On one hand, I'd like Cuaron to do something else besides a big studio franchise flick. On the other hand, he did direct the best Potter movie and is the best choice to helm the first movie in the new series. If this is what he wants to do, go for it, I'll be there day 1.

Please please please happen...

Despite PoA being my favorite book out of the HP series, it was his vision and tone for PoA that made me see the film 7 times in theaters with no regrets at all.

A lot of love for PoA here as well although would love to keep seeing him do his own projects.

(Quick side note: Nikki Finke is the former editor-in-chief of Deadline. They had a falling out back in Nov. - link)

very disappointing, if true. had to wait eight years for his last original film. it was well worth the wait, but I just want this guy churning out stuff all the time

POA is fantastic, though. definitely the best of the HP films (and he was one of my dream choices for Star Wars, however unlikely that was due to his own commitments + studio affiliation)

This seems like kind of a weird career move for Cuaron at this point, but I certainly wouldn't complain if it was true. It would make me a lot more hopeful for Fantastic Beasts, that's for sure.

As a film, it is easily the best in the series. As an adaptation, the only change/cut that bothers me is not explaining the Marauders, but that only becomes an issue in the subsequent films, not POA itself.

This seems like a perfect match really. JKR having free-reign to create a new story and him having free-reign to visualise a wider world than he got to do in PoA.

Was unaware that the multiple HP movies where under different directors (I've only seen two). What made his better than the others?
Prisoner of Azkaban changed the tone of the series to more serious and stylized, the child actors had matured a bit so they could actually act, there's a nice flow and some great plot elements, etc. It helps that the source material is one of the best HP books.

Oh and also it has the best soundtrack in the series, John Williams at his best.
