Had it pointed out to me on twitter that if we follow my prequels comparison to their logical conclusion, the last prequel before ALIEN is going to end with the giant-size Engineer on LV-426 being DAVID, somehow. The entirety of the Prometheus/Covenant/Prometheus 3 trilogy will have existed solely to explain how that jockey ended up on Acheron with a hole in his chest and a ship full of eggs, just like the Prequel Trilogy ended up existing solely to explain how Darth Vader ended up in a suit on a Star Destroyer watching a Death Star get built.

Weak shit, man.

Merry Christmas.

double post.

Oh yeah, far more duds than hits. It's just a bit insane that he made two of the absolutely greatest films of all time within 3 years of eachother, Alien and Blade Runner,.

Haha timing is everything..and thank Dan O'Bannon. Alien was his brainchild as a serious attempt at a space horror movie after his previous "comedy" space schlock, Dark Star. So he wrote the original story treatment and screenplay and tried to shop it. No bite.

So in the meantime he goes abroad and works on Jordowsky's Dune and meets one of the main art designers, H.R Giger. O'Bannon visits one of Giger's art shows at that time and comes across his book the Necrinomicon. Bannon finds his Alien, Dune stalls.
When Bannon comes back home he meets with his partner about alien and contracts Giger to produce some designs, and uses the Necrinomicon to show studio heads the Alien. Fox grabs it. Ridley isn't even onboard at this point but O'Bannons script and Giger's design convince to do it.

After Alien what's Ridley's next project? Dune because he's a fan but also because Giger has designed it. Sadly though the passing of Ridley's brother made him leave the project but Blade Runner fell into his lap immediately.

I really didn't need an explanation, one of the reasons Alien is so good is because of the questions it didn't answer regarding the origin of the ship, jockey and eggs. Not that it's hard to ignore Prometheus and this film if it turns out rubbish.

Been expecting garbage since the spoilers came out. And after this trailer I still am for the final movie, but I did like that trailer. It looks like they brought back the Alien(s) horror vibe which is nice. I even liked that shower shot, it's cheesy slasher movie 101.

I will surely see it first week because of this trailer and Ridley's dope set and props work. Expecting a trainwreck script (well not as bad as Whedon's Alien 4 at least) though.

Actually it probably is that hard. There's really not much you can do with such a limited IP, so naturally they just keep recycling the same stuff. It's a miracle and a testament to Cameron's talent at the time that the first sequel was as good as it was. But it set up the false notion that there should be a "franchise" around Alien.

I don't think Alien should be a franchise any more than I think there should be a franchise around The Godfather or 2001. I don't think there is anything to be gained in learning more about the titular aliens, the androids, or anything else in the Alien universe. In fact I think it's better left to the imagination. Sometimes less is more.

But there's clearly an audience for an Alien franchise since they making these movies, so what do I know. I'll just happily ignore this movie like I do for the others.

You're probably right, actually. The first Alien movie was a horror film, after all, and the same scares and concepts don't work as well the second time or in drastically different settings. I mentioned Terminator in an earlier post, and the first movie definitely didn't need a sequel, but they managed to make it work and I honestly think it's better than the original. Maybe Cameron's just really good at crafting somewhat unneeded sequels?

But I think the existence of Aliens shows that sequels could work well if done right, but it seems like there's so many moving parts in film production where things can go wrong. In hindsight a lot of the choices in the script of Prometheus are ridiculous and senseless, but I obviously know little about what was going behind the scenes during it's production, and said issues probably weren't as noticeable or considered that major at the time. I dunno.

Charlie deLauzirika's 3hr documentary on the making of Prometheus is really good, and provides a lot of insight into how those decisions got made.

Haha Merry Christmas mate.

You said it better I believe earlier in the thread, to the extent we don't mind getting answers to old mysteries and shit...unless of course those answers end up being complete horseshit and unfortunately looks to be the case not once but twice in a row now. lol

Has any good ever come from a project designed to flesh out a fictional universe? I feel like it's almost exclusively dumb shit you were better off not knowing.

I was going to say Metal Gear Solid 3 did good stuff despite the hokey premise that "Big Boss had his own Big Boss", but then that devolved into Snake's identical twin dad and Otacon's identical twin dad being best friends and going on adventures together in the later prequel games.

The latter didn't necessarily bother me. Hell, I still think Huey's character arc in MGSV is one of the best parts of that storyline. He doesn't necessarily change that much, but the journey he goes through is awesome.

I didn't even realize that was a thing, I'll have to see if I can find a cheap copy the Collector's Edition and check that out.

More of teaser trailer, it didn't show too much but just enough to tease the Alien. I like what I see so far though, looks very promising.

Great to see the egg and facehugger again and a nice nod to the original, with the Alien tail going between the unlucky persons legs.

This is looking like the movie Prometheus originally should have been, seeing this day 1 for sure.

I enjoyed prometheus, watched it for a second time a few weeks ago and I still don't hate it despite some stupid stuff. I think the engineer lore is fascinating and it's a beautifully shot movie, I just can't hate it.

this new trailer doesn't really blow me away and I'm sad they are seemingly dropping the engineer stuff

It's just a bit insane that he made two of the absolutely greatest films of all time within 3 years of eachother, Alien and Blade Runner, and then went into mediocrity straight afterwords with only a few great films that were still nowhere near those two. Gladiator, Black Hawk Down, and Kingdom of Heaven D.C. are pretty much it.
The Duelists is also fantastic.

THOUGHT that was you! Thanks man!

lol just ignore the 700+ tweets about Fury Road..

Hey odd question..you've never resided in Michigan right? I could of swore I had conversations with a FatboyRoberts using a hooded avatar pic here many years ago and was based in MI...

Nah, that still seems pretty fucking shit

To be honest, I think the time for the great "retcon everything after Aliens" film is long over. The movie people wanted to see was on Earth, with characters from Aliens who are older, with Xenos wrecking neighborhoods and offices (and Weyland-Yutani getting their shit pushed in at their HQ, probably.)

But that cultural moment has passed. Now it's just... it hurts seeing the series continuing to shamble on like this when seemingly no one can make audiences happy.

Never lived in Michigan. My avatar used to have a hoodie, but I haven't been on this board for all THAT long, I don't think. 2012, maybe? I don't remember.

Also, why would I ever wanna ignore tweets about Fury Road

I was enjoying the trailer until the shower scene. Are you fucking kidding me? You unveil the alien for this movie during a shower sex scene?

Where is the fucking horror in these movies instead of the cheesiness???

he is prolific..ally shit but I gotta say, some of his good ones in the 2000s are movies that a lot of other mainstream directors would kill to have.

Kingdom of Heaven DC alone has him good in my books for another while despite how often I dislike his movies. Like I'm still gonna check out the next ridley scott flick no matter what it is.

GOD Kingdom of Heaven DC is so good. Great story, great music, Ridley on the top of his historical epic game, a veritable army of great actors in fantastic roles...

It's amazing how everybody just sorta doesn't count The Martian.

Hell, I do it too. I just don't count it sometimes. I have to be reminded he turned out a very good sci-fi flick recently.

The trailer isn't as good as I wanted it to be, I think their movie posters are better, i'm still hungry for a new Alien movie though, I hope it won't sucks like Prometheus did.

It's just weird that you have two of the best sci-fi films ever made and then after 30 years the best thing you've done with the IP since is a game from the Total War developers.

I unironically like AvP though. It's a cool flick. Haven't even bothered to watch AvP2 though because I read that the lighting is so bad that you can't see shit anyway.

The Martian was just one of those movies that I enjoyed watching but then forgot about five minutes after the credits rolled.

After reading the book the film was kind of a let down personally.

perfect casting for some of the characters, especially Watney, but man all the tension from the book is lost. That HAB explosion should have been nail-biting.

Still, it's a nice lazy sunday space flick. He nailed the feel-good comedy side of things.

TBH I'm surprised that scene exists. We all get the sexual imagery of the xenomorph but that shower scene feels like something from AVP, it's pretty crude. This movie feels like such an awkward mixture of straightforward slasher x Prometheus lore nonsense.

Wow that trailer was bad. Really, really bad. I went from mildly excited to completely uninterested.

I can't name a single thing that made the trailer so boring, but overall I got absolutely nothing out of it.

looks cool? the friday the 13th reveal of the alien at the end was sure something though. I'm tired of caring about how cyclical the stories are for these films so if we get some nice visuals and James Franco dies a gory death I'll be content.

Yeah, it's good in parts but the main appeal of the book for me was the science and relatively deep survival aspect that felt lost in the film.

It's a throwback to Alien 3. Don't see how it's crude considering the source material.

Edit: We'll I mean it is crude, but so is an alien that basically rapes and impregnates you.

You're damn right about the AvP bit. Now I am going to expect Requiem levels of terrible. :(

Wait james Franco and Danny Mcbride are in this ?

Dick jokes while being chased by alien dicks.

Pineapple Express 2 aww yay

Uninspiring and dull trailer, looked exactly like Prometheus in some places and like a remake of Alien in others, not feeling it.

Requiem is terrible but I had a lot of fun watching it. Better than AvP and Alien Resurrection.

I expect Covenant to be similar, to be honest.

Looks like they land on the planet and the same story unfolds as the one in Alien, with some minor changes here and there.

Could be wrong of course but I guess they are playing it safe, Disney Star Wars level safe. Hope I'm wrong.

The Martian felt way overdone to me. The book was the perfect candidate for a nice little 90-minute indie movie, but then it got Hollywooded into an excruciating two-and-a-half-hour CG blockbuster packed with big names in every role. It glossed over all the science stuff that made up 90% of the book because you can't possibly have maths in a big movie, which just left the most superficial plot points of a "things go wrong, dude fixes them, repeat" story that doesn't really hold up as a grand space opera.

Doesn't really look that good. Cheap shock moments with excessive brutality where beautiful women are tormented, yawn. Script/design also looks like crap. Conventional fire arms from our time with ACOG and holo sights on a mission in the year ~2100 involving a cutting edge space ship that can travel to other solar systems? Lmao, that's just lazy. And of course the crew also acts as stupid as ever. Landing on a foreign planet without considering biological contamination and other dangers? Really? Our space agencies today have fucking guidelines that their Mars rovers can not travel to certain sites because there is danger of contamination. Guidelines for a mission like in the movie would be much more strict. Those people don't act like they are scientists or professionals working for a multi billion dollar company, they act like peasants who have won this trip on a contest, smh. Will probably pass.
