Alien Covenant Trailer Released

Re-watching the trailer, this really feels like a series that is out of ideas. Another crew landing on a planet to find another one of those ships, another egg chamber, another face-hugger, another android, more women fleeing down long metal hallways, more alien stalking. This stuff stopped being scary after Aliens. That the shower scene at the end is both a horror movie trope and re-uses the tail-between-the-legs from Alien is just depressing. It's easy to forget - or not even know, if you grew up after Aliens came out - but this series used to be really scary and kinda fucked up. They're so iconic now, but the designs in Alien were incredibly....well, alien. Strange and new and unsettling.

There's NONE of that here. It's so out of ideas that they have to resort to showing a bunch of character deaths just to elicit some sort of reaction. It's just sad at this point.

I'm still not sure I understand why people hated Prometheus. The characters doing dumb things seemed like a minor nitpick to me that without the HonestTrailers video going viral, most wouldn't have noticed those moments. The film was a box office success, reviewed well and scored well within audiences, it's really just the vocal few controlling the conversation. Scott making more of Prometheus just makes sense, considering it was the most financially successful Alien film ever and reception was fairly positive.

But to me, this looks way more Alien than Prometheus

Critically, it ranks firmly below the first two Alien movies.

Comparing them comercially is absurd. It tells nothing about quality. Phantom Menace was more successful than the OT movies. Jurassic World was more successful than all of the Jurassic Park movies. The Minions are more succesful than all Ghibli movies and almost all Disney movies.

this thread inspired me to draw a re-imagining of the alien

thats a nostril not an eye!

im having fun with this

It wasn't just characters doing dumb things, the script failed at every possible level.

The on ship sets look cheap, and not like in that Alien way. Also not a fan of the way many of those scenes are shot.

But I still expect good things.

We were talking about how dumb Prometheus was day one in the discussion thread we didn't need a YouTube video to bring it up.

And this, a lot of people are able to critique movies just fine without the help of honest trailers or red letter media, those are just succinct examples to get the point across.

There are so many well done critiques of Prometheus that I just believe people who don't understand why some hate it are either being intentionally narrow-minded or ignorant.

For those bitching about the trailer, go watch this re-cut. BONUS POINTS, listen for that screammmmmmM!!!!!!!

Yeeeeeah, that was MUCH better.

Still though, I'm inclined to agree with posters like Ghaleon. Seems like the Alien IP is being ridden now on brand name, using established tropes and plays to the letter, but lacking something more. At this point, I'm convinced they're replaying some of these past ideas because the violence and gore can be dialed up to 11 with current FX.

Not that I had high hopes for this, but that trailer is horrid. The re-cut is certainly better, but I am not expecting much.

Nah.

Alien and Aliens are both in my top 20 movies of all time and Prometheus was easily my most anticipated movie of 2012. I distinctly remember the smile slowing fading from my face as I watched that movie opening night. And I know anecdotal evidence sucks, but the guy beside me actually just got up and walked out during the zombie scene. I'd never actually seen anyone walk out of a movie before. The script was remarkably stupid, and maybe an even bigger sin, it just wasn't scary at all.

People doing dumb stuff was the thing that stood out, and basically ruined the movie for me. Didn't watch the hottest trailers thing.

Hopefully on this one the characters have at least haft the brain.

I'm probably very alone in this, but I stopped watching these to be scared after 3. It takes a lot to scare me these days. Too many suspense thrillers and horror movies I guess *shrugs*

If I'm entertained by this and there is a lot of fan service, I just don't care about being scared.

when the spoilers are that bad it's best to prepare yourself for the shit than actually expecting something decent and leaving disappointed.

It's a double edged sword, I guess. Hopefully, thought I doubt it, they make changes for the better against those spoilers. Surely if the spoilers are that bad then the test audiences would have indicated so to a degree? Or is showing the film to test audiences not influential enough for filmmakers? I'm not sure myself.

A kick in the nuts hurts less, if you brace for it.

I can get that, though I'd personally prefer to know if people just overwhelmingly disliked a film and then see it for myself with far lowered expectations than to know the actual spoilers.

So blomkamps project in preproduction hell because of his film. Ugh.

I just hope he gets to make it. It needs to be made. Hoping we get an update on it sometime next year.

Charlie deLauzirika's 3hr documentary on the making of Prometheus is really good, and provides a lot of insight into how those decisions got made.

Is this on the 4 disc blu ray version by any chance?

Oh my God that was MUCH better lol!! They should have went with a trailer like this. Crazy...I honestly have faith that there is a lot of interesting stuff to be found in the film. They just needed to make a better edited trailer to show for it. Bravo to the creator of this trailer.

I'm like you - being scared is nowhere near my priorities with these films. I watch them cause I am interested in the universe, the atmosphere, the creature, the characters, the music, the cinematography, etc.

Agree with this. This trailer is totally flat and lifeless. Not even sure if I'm gunna rewatch it.

So disappointed, hope to be pleasantly surprised but I doubt that's happening.

Yeah, and Ridley will likely nail most of that, so, I'm in!

I read up on the 4chan leak. It's a very lazy and by the number script that doesn't answer questions.

However I may check it out for
Facebender vs Facebender action.
Yeah. this could be some great schlock.
James Franco dying like that reminds me way too much Robert Forster's death in Supernova.

Are we really that desperate just to see more Xenomorphs? Hasn't this series dragged on enough?

Like I'm genuinely not sure what I'm supposed to care about here. The characters? The setting? It all looks like a rehash, including literally reusing an actor.

It's never gonna get made, and no matter how bad Covenant looks, his Alien 5 is almost guaranteed to be at least 2x as dumb.

Blomkamp looked so promising after District 9 and then Elysium and Chappie happened.... pretty sure he would try and make the xenomorphs sympathetic lol, the dude completely misses the point of subtlety, his social messages come across like a fucking hammer

Eh, the world of Alien is still super interesting and cool-looking, but yeah, that trailer didn't really do much for me. Nothing seems new or exciting; just a plethora of imagery that seems to rehash ideas from previous Alien films. This is just one trailer though, so I still hope the final movie proves me wrong.

Did they really need to show the guy dieing in the shower? Just ruined that part

Lol not much to be ruined. I'm more baffled they're actually bothering with such a played out trope for the big ending "scare" or whatever the hell that was supposed to be.

Honestly a series like this needs the intro of some big new idea/threat or REALLY good characters to carry it, this trailer showed none of that. Some weird twists on shit (dude with his spine breaking w.e the fuck that was about) is not enough to get me hyped.

Reusing actors is a tradition. Lance Henrikson plays three different characters.

In retrospect....yea, this.

But the scenery and cinematography look splendid.

The documentary, The Furious Gods: Making Prometheus is really interesting and well worth a watch. Like Bobby said, it's really good and you can plainly see why Prometheus ended up like it did. I think the collector's edition blu-ray is really cheap now, saw it in HMV for £9.99 ($12.27) which is unfortunately the only legitimate way to watch it that I know of.

I quite enjoy Prometheus even though I know it's dumb, it absolutely intrigues me much like Alien did. I guess the new film will be the same, I think the trailer looks alright and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't hyped for the film.

i'll definitely be seeing this. the only two movies i enjoyed were the original and prometheus. this looks like it has a similar feel to the original and it is a sequel to prometheus so win win! the main series of movies only got worse with each release. 2 was OK, 3 was too long and boring, 4 was just ridiculous and totally ruined Ripley as a character. if they are doing a 5th movie then reboot it and have Katherine Waterston's character become the main actor instead of sigourney weaver

I think that these newer releases are by and large the result of the trend of re-churning every single viable property out of the 80s/70s as possible.

I don't think they lend anyting to the core alien franchise, and could even detract from the overall mythos.

I think there's one alien story worth telling and that would be what happened to Newts Colony before Ripley and the Marines landed.

Really hoping there's more to the movie as I feel like the trailer showed too much and one too many plot points. Wasn't expecting to see so much in an initial trailer and it's put me off a bit unlike blade runner 2049 that left me feeling intrigued.

Wait so is this the same David or another model?

I think there are two androids in this film, both played by Fassbender. The Prometheus David (blonde, curious, did all the shit in the first film) and Covenant David (brown hair).

lol, imagine if this whole movie was just two Davids stuck on a hostile alien planet together, one trying to do science experiments while the other is just trying to not die.

The cardinal sin here is that visually, it doesn't even look great. Seems like Scott traded his usual flair, for a more clinical look like the one he employed for The Martian.

I personally liked this trailer, as a massive Alien fan, it shows just enough of what I wanted, actual Aliens, not some weird spin off that we got with Prometheus. I do actually like Prometheus, despite some of its flaws but it wasn't an Alien movie.

I hope the second trailer is cut together better and has a little bit more plot info (not too much though) for the people who haven't read the spoilers or follow the series too closely because if any of the spoilers are true, then there is a lot more going on than this trailer shows people.

I want to see if anyone can back me up on this:

Alien: Resurrection is a super fun (albeit dumb) action movie.

The cardinal sin here is that visually, it doesn't even look great. Seems like Scott traded his usual flair, for a more clinical look like the one he employed for The Martian.

The Martian is fucking gorgeous though.

I don't want to watch the trailer because I haven't seen the previous films. I just want to know which movie this is a sequel to. Is it Prometheus or the other Alien films and which order should I watch them in to 'get' what's happening in Covenant?

That thing looks fucked up, in a good way.

Still a giant downgrad to the insectioid Xenomorph
I'm still working on it and having an absolute blast lol

I decided it'll be a "space amphibian", an arboreal salamander that is used to the cold temperature of space.. when it enters warmer temps like the inside of a ship, it sweats depending on how warm it gets and the sweat is slimy AF

Tomorrow I'm giving it webbed hands/feet with sticky padded finger tips, it'll use them to "swim" through space and climb smooth/rough surfaces like a tree frog

Finally a trailer for Prometheus 2! \o/

Liked the trailer. I hope this is finally gonna be a good Alien movie again. Also I hope it's more in the vein of Alien rather than Aliens.
Also also I hope the Xenomorph isn't CGI, at least outside of any fight scenes or whatever.
