Alien Hominid - Buy it biznatches!!

Baron Aloha

A Shining Example
I picked up the GC version today at EB (the only place in town selling it). I just finished my first play through. In short, I believe Alien Hominid (AH) may very well be the best run & gun shooter I've played in the past 5-10 years. Is it a Metal Slug ripoff? Absolutely. But its right up there with any of the Metal Slugs and I should know because I own all six of those.

Where do I begin? Well for starters its pretty clear that the people who made this game believed in the mantra that "variety is the spice of life". You want variety? This is one of the few shooters that actually has it and its got it in spades. For starters, just about every good weapon from Contra, Metal Slug, and Gunner's Heaven is here...plus some fresh new ones. There's probably 10 different types of guns in the game plus the grenades which were taken from Metal Slug.

Then there's vehicles. Just about every level has some type of vehicle in it that is totally different from any of the vehicles in any of the preceding levels. We're talking tanks, trucks, snowmobiles, bigfoots, robots, space ships, etc...you name it and its probably here. The bigfoot sequence was particularly awesome. You hop on the dude's back and he controls just like the monsters in Midway's Rapage games. The attack button punches (which you must use to knock down watch towers) and down + the attack button makes the bigfoot scoop up bad guys and eat them.

There are a wide variety (and large number) of levels as well including city streets, highways, deserts, area 51, communist russia, space, etc. I made it up to level 3-5 on my first play through and I had already gone through 16 levels. My favorite level so far is the highway level. In it, you must jump from car to car to progress (if you fall between the cars you hit the pavement and die) while dodging FBI agents, helicopters, bombs, etc. Its just really well done. In the Area 51 levels you can uncage captured aliens and they will help you kill the bad guys. It's a lot of fun.

The enemies? Too numerous to list. Most of them have humerous death animations... like the hawks in the Russia levels that explode and leave nothing but a bunch of feathers and a drumstick. :) The animation in general is very well done. Your alien can meet its maker in any number of ways and each of them has their own animation.

There is also a customization aspect to the game. In the options screen you can name your alien anything you want and you can also outfit him with 1 of dozens and dozens of hats that you can unlock during the game. Some of the hats include regular base ball caps, an afro, chef's hat, nurse's hat, indian head dress, a single feather, a chinese hat (like what Raiden in MK wears), dog fight glasses/cap, etc. They are really too numerous to list. I thought it was nice of them to let you add your own touch to the character.

At $30 this game is a steal. I myself have spent far more and received far less in return for other games I have purchased in the past. In short, the game delivers. I highly recommend AH to anyone even remotely entertained by Contra, Metal Slug, or other similar shooters. Like I said, its right up there with some of the best slugs and it easily trounces Shattered Solider and Neo Contra (no doubt in my mind whatsoever). Do yourselves a favor, pull yourselves away from the Halos, the Metroid Primes, the GTAs, and the Metal Gear Solids for a moment and give this game a shot. It's a lot of fun and afterall isn't that why we play games in the first place?

2 player co-op, right?

Yes. I haven't tried the co-op yet but I can imagine it being an insane amount of fun (if 1P is any indication). A buddy of mine introduced me to the flash version a number of years ago. He doesn't know that I have this yet (heck I don't even think he knows this is out or that it was being made) so when he comes over I'm going to surprise him and we'll play it for a while.

Hopefully its not on the bottom of your list. :)

I'm only interested in Co-Op, and you already had me sold with the first sentence ... but do you think someone who really enjoys Dynasty Warriors in Co-Op and the LOTR games in Co-Op would enjoy this game?

?????

This game is not for the weak. Everyone needs to buy it though. Even if it's to play once and put on the shelf to play one of the other 30 quality games that came out the last 2 months.

MVS. AES is too rich for my blood. AES Metal Slug 1 goes for anywhere between 2 and 3 grand.
Sometimes I wonder if it would have been better to go the MVS way too. I only got Metal Slug 3 and 4, and they probably cost me the price of the entire serie on MVS.

So how does it control with the GC pad?

I find it really hard to use the little d-pad and I don't really like playing 2D games with the analog stick.

I really can't decide if I should get the GC or PS2 version.

Edit: Okay, so I'm not seeing any differences between the versions noted in the IGN reviews and Gamespot says it's the same on both.... however the GC version's score is .2 points higher. What's up with that?

why isn't this on xbox? i have all 3 systems, but i'd prefer an xbox version. maybe i will buy it for GC.... at the right price :D *

*and by right price i mean <$10

it's pretty liberal with the lives and continues, so even if you suck, you can get kinda far, and eventually get better at it.

According to Gamespy, it's got a date of February 15th.

No mention of it on the official site, but they never say they're not making an Xbox version, and they do say they're not making a PC version.

You can use the analog stick and it controls like a dream.

How is the difficulty level? I like Contra, but I SUCK at it. Am I going to enjoy this game at all?

Very fun. Not nearly as frustrating as the recent Contras. Extra lives and continues are easy to earn. You get them at the end of every level and the amount you get is based on your score. As someone else already said, its easy to get pretty far in the game your first time though on one of the lower difficulty levels. You can choose between Easy, Medium, Hard, and TS (which I'm guessing stands for "Tough Shit"). So again, its a pretty customizable experience.

So if it was the xbox version would you pay more than $10?

... and it's not even listed on all the Canadian online stores I checked.

I fear walking into an EB and asking for it. Here's what usually happens:

EB: "Did you preorder"
ThirstyFly: "Nooooooooooo"
*hears shotgun click*
ThirstyFly: "I'll be on my way then..."
*runs*

www.videogamesplus.ca has it listed.

Cool, thanks. Now to decide on PS2 or GC...

I can't find the specific thread but everyone who has played both said the GC version was better. Something about faster loading times and the PS2 version has a small (almost insignificant but still there) amount of slowdown in some parts.

I forgot to include this in my original post but every level has a unique boss and 95% of the levels have 1-2 mini bosses as well. Great stuff.

Did I mention this game has a mini-game in it as well? I haven't touched it yet but IGN describes it as follows:

IGN said:
.... enjoy the PDA, which offers around 200 levels of single screen platforming reminiscent of a rudimentary Out of this World or some kind of ultra old school Montezuma's Revenge / Prince of Persia thing. It's presented wonderfully (like the rest of the game), and it's very addicting.... The game even includes an editor that allows its players to create their own mini-game scenarios. Very good stuff.

Yeah, I recall that from the previews on Gamespot, but since they said the final versions were identical I assumed they managed to fix up the PS2 version.

Is there any load time for the levels like Contra: SS or is it pretty seamless?

At the end of each level you go into the score tally screen and from there it goes to the loading screen (where it basically says "Loading Level 2-3" or whatnot. The loading times are really short (like 1-2 seconds). Plus the loading screens aren't static so the transition is even smoother.

JC10001--Do you know if the game runs in progressive scan? I'm already planning to pick up the GC version regardless, but that would be a nice plus.

Sounds good to me, thanks for the info.

If anyone else is having trouble deciding on which version to get like I am, I'm going though all the reviews I can find and skimming them for differences.

So far all I've found is a comment about slowdown and this followup posting on etoychest (the actual review content is the same for both versions):

"Have you tested the GameCube version? Does it suffer from the same slowdown problem?"

"I have, and while not as extensive, they are still there. Keep inmind, however, this is not enough on either version to make the game any less fun."

I guess I'll snag the GC version. I hope I can get the hang of the analog stick for control or I'll have to import a hori pad too (which I should have done ages ago anyway).

Pretty good question. I would like to know also.

I beat the game since posting the topic (on the easy difficulty) and I can speak from personal experience and say that the GC version has absolutely ZERO slowdown. If its there, then it must be limited to the 2P mode. There is none whatsoever in the 1P mode. I will play it again on a higher difficulty setting to unlock more hats. If there is any slowdown I will let you know.

The analog stick works very well.

I have no clue as to whether or not progressive scan is supported. I'm not into all that stuff personally. Would it say so on the box somewhere? If it does, I'll check the box when I get home.

The analog stick works very well.

It may, but I suck :)

Gladly I'm not worried about slowdown in the co-op mode. I can't get my friends to sit down and seriously play Contra:SS or Gradius V so I highly doubt they'll be up for a little Alien Hominiding.

For the uninformed: This game was done by some of the Newgrounds crew (Tom Fulp & co). While it does feel very much like their Flash games, the intensity is several orders of magnitude higher. Don't dismiss AH simply because it was spawned from a Flash game -- it is a true 2D run-n-gun game with plenty of stuff that blows up real good.

Here are the other mini-games Behemoth threw in. You get to unlock these by passing certain points in the game or blowing up stuff (buildings, objects, etc.).

Pinata Boss: Shoot the magical floating pinata and collect the candy that falls out before the timer hits zero! Bosses from the game show up and try to keep you from scoring that precious sugary loot. Fortunately, they drop candy too, so kill them indescriminately. You get infinite lives in this mode, so go nuts.
Neutron Ball: 2 players. Kind of like football. Carry/throw the neutron ball around the field and throw it into your goal.
SUPER SOVIET MISSILE MASTAR: This one is the most like NG's goofy smaller games. It's a retro-styled Atari 2600 type of game where you guide a Soviet missile to its target (the US), while avoiding the obstacles that get thrown at you (planes, helicopters, other missiles).

I agree. This game is a breath of fresh air. Lots of atmosphere and slick presentation. The customizable hats are a really nice touch. Everyone should play it at least once.

But... (boss-specific spoilers):
Playing on normal, I found the only way to pass the first two bosses was by digging into the ground to avoid the bullets passing overhead. Trying to jump or dodge the bullets just wasn't happening. It was way too difficult, compared to digging into the ground. If they expect you to dig in the ground during a boss fight, that's really lame. It takes the fun out of the game when you do this too much, but I didn't see a way to fight these bosses without it.

I'll play this game more when/if the WoW servers go down. This and Pirates! are my fallback games during server downtime.
