Aliens: Colonial Marines demo vs. final build

I think it's pretty clear now that GBX created this false demo to satisfy Sega and fans then had to throw it all out for development purposes. Sega got ripped off.

I guess we were looking at the "gameplay prototype/blueprint" they handed to the studios actually making the game, which also doubled as a trailer.

Hey Gearbox

Sega, it's suin' time.

I was browsing the Steam forum for this game (REFUND! REFUND! REFUND!) and apparently people bought an effing SEASON PASS for this trainwreck as if pre-ordering wasn't enough. What happens if / when DLC is cancelled?

"Some of these should be moved down to the Pecan level" sounds like Timegate or Gearbox was moving some features into the games engine itself. Or was a level actually called "Pecan?"

some other funny things too :D

+Suppress=DevGFx
+Suppress=DevGearboxAI
+Suppress=DevTurret

lol these are legit things in a config file lol

Am I the only one who REALLY wants to play this out of morbid curiosity now?

Shouldn't cost more than 5 bucks come Summer Sale anyway.
I don't. I fell asleep while watching the lengthy Giant Bomb Quick Look. It's not a particularly interesting kind of bad game. Just monotonous unbearable shit.

I am trying not to be upset about this game but damnit its hard not to be genuinely angry. This couldn't have been a better premise for a Alien game:

-Takes place on LV421
-Authentic Pulse Rifles and Alien Homages Galore
-4 Player Co-Op

The earlier demos were at least atmospheric enough to convince me they were nailing the "Feel" of the game. Now were in a lose lose situation.

If the game absolutely tanks we won't be getting something in this universe for a very long time.

If it is a moderate success Gearbox will be convinced they can get away with this kind of rampant dishonesty.

Game over man. Game over

I don't understand the people that are saying they dialed the final game back or stopped caring halfway through development. It's fairly obvious Gearbox/TG/whoever decided that they didn't want to show their actual game for reasons unknown (they must have known it wasn't in a state where it was presentable), and created a 10 minute demo separate from the actual game using the higher poly/higher res assets (from their in development game) to wow press and convince consumers. I wouldn't be surprised at all if a lot of the "advanced AI" in the demo just turned out to be scripting. Hell I wouldn't be surprised if 90% of that demo was scripted.

It's fucking disgusting that a company can do such a bait and switch. It's the equivalent to how fast food chains sell burgers. They look all pretty in the ads and are technically made from the same ingredients, but what the consumer gets is completely different. The only difference is that it's a normal practice in fast food chains so consumers are used to it by now and don't expect that to be what they actually get. In the gaming industry however, it's not something people expect. The closest example is Killzone 2, but that finished product turned out very similar to the demo. That game got a ton of hate for that and it's not even comparable to how Gearbox/Sega lied to consumers. This isn't defensible in any manner and Gearbox/Sega should get tons of hate for how they went about this.

I have a favor to ask. Can you screenshot some/all of these? Doesn't need to be full screen, just screenshot directly from the config and post it. I'm wanting to contribute to the A:CM video bonanza.

Hmmm... what graphical effects on the HUD are there in the demo but not the final?

Hell, upload the configs to megaupload or somewhere and post a pastebin copy-paste of the contents of the files. You know, like most leaks do.

they are all in the game directory just come under pecan.

C:\Program Files (x86)\Aliens Colonial Marines\PecanGame

thats what mine comes under

in my documents under build info file it says

BuildNumber=55
BuildTag=Pecan.4170--2013-2-11_10.58
SynchronizedToChangelist=708706
RequestedBy=

funny how build number is 55 still ? the other one i posted was from the pecan file under game directory

Alright the Jim Sterling thing is a bit BS...its like going back to the HL2 tech demos and complaining that stuff didnt happen...games change a lot between alpha and release...not saying the game isnt crap, but comparing it 1:1 with a presentaion build isnt fair especially if its earlier code/scenarios

Talk about false advertising lol... right up there with the red steel wii 'gameplay footage' and the sony e3 demos and the EA bullshots.

Remember back in 2000 when MS had to publicly apologise for putting a single photoshop lensflare on top of some xbox snowboarding game screenshot? I miss those times.

Also why is ricky gervais discussing games on youtube now?

in the configs for this game i see this mentioned alot TODO: Some of these should be moved down to the Pecan level. in the game folder i have config files for these people aswell JBROOME and CMCKNIGHT
Well? Did you move them to the Pecan or not? I've heard that's the key to unlocking the demo-like quality levels.

That's actually a line in config?

ya

I wouldn't doubt it

remember the mass effect 3 endings that were in bik format
red.bik
blue.bik
green.bik

Oh yeah I just remembered they were actually named something along those lines. They knew they were horrible identical endings when they shipped them out.

End03_LondonRed.bik
End03_LondonBlue.bik
End03_LondonGreen.bik

I wonder if we could get some of the atmosphere back in the game by fiddling with the cfg files. I know it doesn't fix the game, but it could at least make it look a bit better...

This is depressing. =(

I wanted this game to be awesome.
Over the past year there were already a lot of signs indicating that this game probably wasn't going to be that good. At least year's PAX East is when I clued in on that.

Just the way they were handling it. Just had a feeling about it.

I've been doing a bit of digging on LinkedIn, and this seems to solidify the Gearbox/TimeGate development relationship. There's nothing explosive or incriminating, but it perhaps just shows how TimeGate had a significant hand in many of the gameplay systems.

We can see Rechner's recommendation comment on Mulkey's profile, but I'm unable to view Mulkey's return recommendation at the bottom.
