Alita: Battle Angel

If it's about making her seem more human (since the eyes are a window to the soul-ironic in this case given how inhuman she looks) then it's 2 stupid 4 me.

No I just find big, round, smooth things highly distracting.

I like the original manga a lot (not so much the Last Order sequel, and didn't try the Mars chronicles), so will definitely watch the movie. From the trailer I'm not sure they managed to get the "dirty" feeling of that universe though (it's basically Zalem's garbage dump after all), but we'll see.

I love the eyes, I have no idea why people who claim to like anime have a problem with them.....

Her eyes are the very definition of the uncanny valley. What works in one art style does not necessarily work in another.

For example, some Pokemon may look cute when hand drawn, but as a photo-realistic CGI they turn into an outright nightmare:

I really enjoyed the film.

I went in blind so I didn't know about the Manga until I came into this thread.

I felt that there were a few Terminator references hidden in there which I liked but it probably annoyed people who read the Manga.

I associated the Eyes with her being from Mars. (Assuming that Humans evolve differently in different environments). Is she this powerful in the Manga? I might check out the Manga now! :)

Just got back from a preview showing, came out a bit disappointed. I'm gonna try not to post too many spoilers, but I felt the weakest part of the movie wasn't the eyes, or the CG, it was the poor world building. I could never figure out why Hugo was so desperate to go to the floating city. I mean I don't know if the manga did a better job of this but in the movie they failed to depict why life on the surface world was supposed to be so bad. Yeah sure it had killer cyborgs walking around the streets, but besides that what was so bad about it? All I saw was Hugo got to spend his days hanging out with his cute cyborg gf, play with his friends, go hiking in the woods, and watch Motorball matches. How was that a living hell?

Phew. In the manga, the Scrapyard is Zalem's garbage dump and murder is basically a misdemeanor. It's one of the bleakest settings I can think of.

Oh I see. Well I think the movie utterly failed to depict that. Maybe they just made things look a bit too bright and colorful. Even the people walking around don't seem particularly unhappy or even poor. I mean I've seen cities like Brazil and parts of Los Angeles that look worse than what I saw in the movie.

The problem is the real world texturing.

I mean would flawless robot like CG like skin be impossible in the real world? Of course not. Anyone who collects figures knows flawless skin is possible. A CG 3d homer, in cartoon style looks ace, the 3d characters in smash look ace. And these CG characters would be photoreal if they had proper raytraced lighting. The problem is an attempt to change the style with realism.

As for alita, I've not seen the movie yet. But from the trailers in some scenes her eyes look fine and artistic, but in others they look wrong. Don't know if it's some scenes hadn't had all the adjustments yet, or if the eye size just doesn't suit some camera angles. But given that it looks good in some angles, it seems with enough work either by limiting camera angles or even slight adjustment of eye size from scene to scene it could have worked.

Interesting. I mean in the OVA, they don't go into much details, but the fact that you can kinda tell what's above seems like it'd be super futuristic, plus a few rumors, would be enough to give strong hope and desire for someone who's living in a garbage dump slum to want to go there. Maybe they didn't convey the setting of it being garbage infested slums, with people struggling to survive, too clearly then?

In the OVA,
Hugo's brother builds a balloon to try and get into zalem, but his wife reports him and they come and drag him off. Hugo later finds his brothers hand being sold on the black market, it's pretty dark stuff, but explains why Hugo is so obsessed with getting there.

In the Manga, iron city is just a huge crime ridden shit-hole. It's literally a pile of trash.

Im keen to see this movie.I watched the anime in the 90's and then recently on youtube as a refresher. Its pretty cool.
I'll assume this movie version wont have a sexy blond doctor showing off her T&A or the graphic death of that innocent dog :'(

I think you will be pleasantly surprised by how many direct references to the anime there are. I only read one volume of the manga and I was able to notice a bunch of references.

BTW the guy who played Hugo was also horrible. For being such a critical character you would think they would find someone with better acting chops and who didn't look like he just stepped out of an episode of Saved by the Bell.

It hurt the whole movie because the guy just seemed so lame. And undeserving of Alita's love and attention. I mean that whole death scene would have been a lot more impactful if he was a more sympathetic character.

I liked the manga, not sure how they will pull off all the craziness on screen, but I am down for seeing it

I'm probably gonna try to catch it one more time. Some of those motorball scenes can only appreciated on a huge screen. And I get giddy everytime I hear Christoph Waltz say "Panzer Kunst."

Just got back from watching it with my roommate, and I enjoyed it overall. The special fx were mostly all great, and Alita's eyes didn't bother me at all. Some of the action choreography is really well done.

I'm probably going to go read through the manga all the way now. :)

Always a good thing when the adaptation sparks curiosity in the source material

Watched it the other day but didn't feel like posting about it at the time. I thought overall it was "good" it has some problems but it confirms the source material has been read. Zalem, Panzer Kunst, Hunter Warrior, they don't shy away from the terminology. The place isn't as run down as it should be but I guess that might be related to the rating, same with the violence you see someone get cut in half but it's still a 12A? Really?

Action sequences were good, music was barren and generic, how do you have the guy who did the Fury Road OST FILLED with bangers and in this there is nothing? I would have liked to see him do something with "Action" from the OVA. That one character who appears in the manga later on being used so early was quite a big risk for the narrative but it didn't falter. Also surprised they name dropped Jashugan and he was white also. lol.

The guy who played Hugo/Yugo was either decent or bad, it was a bit of a mess for that final pivotal moment. Also didn't care for them making Gally/Alita say "I love you" they ALWAYS have to put that in there for the normie audience.

It's got a fair few problems but there were a lot of literal references straight from the manga and it's obvious Jimmy Cameron gave a fuck so I wasn't displeased with it. It wasn't worth the wait however NGL.

Seeing this tomorrow in the city, a day after release. It looks ace and i am sucker for Cyberpunk, Sci-fi and Japanese roots.

Hope word will spread, it makes money and we get a sequel!

Saw this last night in imax 3d. Quickly reminded why I need to stop seeing 3d movies. Have a hell of a time focusing on anything during action scenes.

It was good even though it all felt a bit rushed. Didn't care for the love interest bits. Action was awesome.

I'm not at all familiar with the manga so I was a bit disappointed when I realised this is going to have a sequel(s?). I can get excited for more though.

I have read all the Manga's (for Battle Angel series at least) How many volumes are in the movie? Does it get to Desty Nova stuff?

I will probably just see it in 2D at the theater, but get the 3D version for home. I am travelling, so it may be a few weeks.

Watch it in IMAX 3D.
I found the body horror terrifying. They get away with a lot...

You can see Cameron's fingerprints all over this. It's been a while since a blockbuster packed such an emotional punch.
Alita is awesome and I don't have a problem with the love interest. I was pleasantly surprised by how much Waltz is in the movie. The cameos are pretty fun.

It's obvious that Cameron's original script was shortened. The third act's pacing is shit.

Just got back from seeing it. Went in with low expectations and came out really happy. Defiantly Robert R.'s best film. The action scenes were absolutely amazing. :messenger_ok: Only really complaint I have is the abrupt ending and I really wanted to see more of the past war. Hope this gets a sequel.

Well there you go, now you know why her eyes are like that. lol

And now we throw a spanner in the works by mentioning that in low light levels (given that mars is further from the sun) eyes actually atrophy and shrink, not grow. Owls have big eyes because birds use eyesight to hunt small vermin, and owls do it nocturnaly. Do Martians hunt small vermin on mars in the dark with their sight? Even then, typically sound/echolocation and smell should be more pronounced in Alita as they are superior adaptions to nocturnal living in the forest. Oh wait Martians live in cities with artificial light, presumably they have electricity. Why are their eyes different then? lol. We must get to the bottom of this bug eyed mystery that makes no sense.

I will see the movie tonight if it is out. Will check movie times later.

No spanner in works for me, it's not a realistic fact based sci-fi. From another planet and evolved in a different way is enough for me.
:)

If you care about fact based sci-fi I can imagine it being distracting though.

I watched a making video of this on my TV the and I don't know why but the CG looks terrible on a TV but looks incredible on an IMAC screen. Is it because you can see all the finer details on a cinema screen?

Yes typically cinemas these days are Digital 4k, so you're seeing far more detail than on a television at 1080p, unless you have a 4k bluray at hand. Avatar looks like a cartoon on most tv's, even streamed at 4k. But in cinema it was very impressive.

What was so bad about the city anyway? Feels about as dangerous as a late Old West town.
What the characters say versus what they do and what the movie looks like don't match. For example there's that guy with the oranges and you get the message that it's an exploitative dystopia etc. and then the goddamn chocolate scene comes... Jesus Christ that stand looked amazing.
Compare this to Elysium lol

Biggest problem for me was pacing for sure, it's pretty clear this could use an extra... hour? 30-60 minutes. It's too bad it wqs restricted to pg-13 for monetary reasons, but the action was definitely violent, and there was some severe body horror for me. Some of those creations are wild man.

Ill go back and look at the manga and everything, seems like a cool world, and I did really enjoy myself with it. Just needed more runtime, imo.

Saw it last night.

Pro's:
  • THAT CITY. Holy shit. I am sucker for BIG CGI rendering of immense worlds and Alita does not disappoint. From a visual and tech perspective this movie is balls to the wall beautiful.
  • Action scenes were great despite the mocap showing. Multiple times i have snickered saying fatality from Mortal Kombat in them, which is good.
  • The visual make up. Goes with the first point but the artstyle, that cyberpunk neo-futuristic asian sci-fi stuff.. it hits you.
  • Some funny remarks here and there to lighten up the scene.
  • Alita is totally believable as a cute, but not so innocent entity.
Con's:
  • Dialogues don't really have that much impact and border on cringy on occassion.
  • Progression is also a bit jacked. Often you see a scene and instead of it being played out, it instantly jumps to the next, which breaks immersion. As if the director sometimes didn't understand that some shots need longer exposure and focus before shifting to the next scene
  • And well.. (spoiler). Not going to tell you. Just watch.
Conclusion:
All in all i am glad i suggested this one, like i suggested Mortal Engines last time with my flock of friends. Alita: Battle Angel does not disappoint when it comes to visual representation and action scenes and its definitely a highlight of the movie. What it falls short upon, is the quality of the dialogues and some shots being simply played out too short.

If you can forgive the movie for its less than good story, than Alita: Battle Angel is definitely a movie you should see amidst all the Marvel violence. It gives you its heart. :)

Man I really liked that and didn't have the same cognitive dissonance I had with GITS. When GITS copied scenes from the Manga and Anime I felt there was no heart to them and they just included them just to check a box. Here their was a heart and weight to every scene and they made sense. Which is kinda weird cause I feel GITS was better when it wasn't aping the Anime. This IMO is how you adapt Anime/Manga and have it work. Too bad it's gonna most likely bomb but it's still early so I may be wrong.

I watched this bad girl in IMAX 3D. So fantastic.

I've never read the manga (will do so in the future) but I could tell there was some love here. Everything worked for me and I think fell in love with Alita. My ONLY gripe was the Hugo character. I had no sympathy or feeling towards him. I actually liked it when he wasn't on screen.

Other than that, I will be buying this movie on Ultra Blu-ray, possibly whatever ultra special edition, because Alita was quite "eye-catch" 💖

Saw it and heres what I got to say.
Would movie viewers rather of had Avatar 2 at this point in time? Or more deep dives and this movie? Avatar should be James Cameron’s number 1 priority given the success of the original. Aleta looked good, but I think you can virtually take any ol’ main character and still deliver the same action sequences. I wish there was a better backstory rather than just memories. I would have liked to get into the mech-tech more, and how parts are so easily changed out that being said, Alta has some of the best visuals and you know what, if someone told me they were making a trilogy out of this I’d watch them.
