Oh, and the list doesn't include the original Pokemon Games (Red, Blue, Green, Yellow, Gold, Silver, Crystal) which have sold 76 million combined.

Whoa, when did this happen? I thought it only sold around 400,000 in Japan and bombed hard everywhere else?

I'm guessing around 675k in Japan, 200k US, rest elsewhere...

I might be getting a breakdown of the figures (ie Japan, US, other) soon...

Wowow @ Golden Sun numbers. I had no idea that both games sold over 2 million.

Animal Crossing even sold over a million. Wow!

Not sure how you sourced this but some of those numbers look pretty unbelievable. Did Duck Hunt really sell 20mil?

And Wario Ware 1 mil? I'd love to believe that as true but find it difficult to. Are these figures heavily rounded off?

Grubdog said:
Oh, shipment numbers? That makes sense then... I guess.

Nintendo shipment numbers are always very accurate, as can be seen by the fact that they usually creep up by 50k or whatever year on year. For example, Zelda Wind Waker had sold 2.02M by Mar 2002, 3.25M by Dec 2003 and 3.33M by Mar 2004.

Therefore, if there's a need to keep shipping more copies, it's obviously sold out- i.e. there aren't half a million copies sitting on shelves somewhere.

So there is 40 milllion super mario bros carts out there? That's a lot of radioactive sprites.
Think of all the goombas and koopas that means.
Billions of them marching forward.

Nintendo moved games at an unmatched clip during the NES era. Wow.
Too bad it went gradually downhill from there system to system. They still have great sales for their games though. I'd like to see Sony's million sellers...

It was bundled with the system. Same with GB Tetris.

And NES Duck Hunt as well. Still doesn't take away fromt the fact that 40M people have bought a NES bundled with SMB though (and probably paid more than just for a NES on it's own)....

Still very impressive

There were a number of very strong sellers in the N64 and SNES days as well though...

The Legend Of Zelda: Oracle Of Ages / Seasons GB 3.98

The Legend Of Zelda: Link's Awakening GB 3.83

It's remarkable that OoS/OoA was able to out-sell LA, especially considering LA has seen a DX release, and OoS/OoA were released towards the end of the GBC life cycle.

LA DX also sold 2.22.

I'm surprised at that too. I bought a GBC for Pokémon Red and Link's Awakening DX.. the only games I ever bought for it.

Nice to see Metroid Prime doing well- it's a shame that the Metroid Series hasn't been all that successful over the years.

Also don't forget that these sales are only until the end of Dec 2003. Smash Bros Melee for example has sold another 300k in the US alone since then. Expect GC and GBA numbers to keep creeping up, especially with drops to Player's Choice etc.

I'd expect Smash Bros Melee to hit 6M before it's through, and MK: DD and Mario Sunshine to cross 5M without too much trouble. Still down on the big N64 games though...

Both Golden Suns over a million? *cry*

And is a Mario game still the highest selling non-pack-in game ever? The list is showing me that 3 isn't it anymore so I'm not sure which

Breakdown by format. Looking at these figures, you realise that Nintendo actually had much more success with their self-published games on the N64 than on the SNES.

The N64 was a big money-earner for Nintendo's own software.

I think so. SMW, SMB, Duck Hunt, and Tetris were all pack-ins. Don't know about Super Mario Land, but it might've been at one point in time.

Yeah, Mario Bros 3 is at 17.3 M

I think GTA:Vice city is the highest non-nintendo game, about 11 M maybe?

LA DX also sold 2.22.
Ah, didn't catch that. NM then.

I wonder why OoS and OoA are counted as the same game. Are the sales combined for both games, or are they that much each? Either way, I think they should be separate.

Few Questions....

Is this list USA or worldwide?
At very least Mario Land wasn't reguarly packed in, so I think we coudl call it the best selling non-pack in. Mario 3 was packed in for a bit.

What's the highest selling game ever NOT made by Nintendo (Be interested to see how many of these games are in front of it).

Broshnat said:
That's combined. They sold pretty much 50-50, so about 2M each.

No, 4M each. It was pretty clear from Nintendo GDC presentation.

The funny fact is, like Pokemon games, both games did sell the same amount of units.

Worldwide.

I don't think Mario Bros 3 was ever packed-in. I think Mario Land 3 was moreso...

I'm not sure on this one, but as I said before- GTA:VC has a good chance at being the highest non-Nintendo game.

A few other figures I have collected (not 100% sure of the accuracy of all these though):

Capcom Million Sellers Worldwide (taken from their last yearly report)

Code:
Street Fighter 2	SNES 6.30
Resident Evil 2	PS 4.96
Street Fighter 2 Turbo	SNES 4.10

Devil May Cry	PS2 2.16
Onimusha	PS2 2.02
Super Street Fighter 2	SNES 2.00
Onimusha 2	PS2 1.99
Aladdin	SNES 1.75

Street Fighter 2 Plus	MD 1.67

Super Ghouls & Ghosts	SNES 1.09
Megaman 3	NES 1.08
Final Fight 2	SNES 1.03
Street Fighter Alpha 3	PS 1.00

Note that this list counts games like RE, RE: DS. RE: DC seperatly.

And MGS numbers from Konami:

Code:
Metal Gear Solid PS 5.51
Metal Gear Solid Integral PS 1.27

Metal Gear Solid 2 PS2 5.60
Metal Gear Solid 2 Substance PS2 1.36

They are on Konami's own site, along with some Yu-gi-oh Games

I can't seem to find any more- Tekken? Gran Turismo? Crash series? Ridge Racer?

I don't think this 40 mill number should apply.... I mean you were not actually buying the game...... there is no way to tell.

Plus this are shipped numbers....

Super Mario Bros NES 40.24
Super Mario World SNES 20.61
Super Mario Bros 3 NES 17.28
Super Mario 64 N64 11.91
Super Mario Bros 2 NES 7.46
Super Mario Sunshine GC 4.19
Super Mario Bros 2 NES 2.65 (I'm assuming this is the JP version?)

In comparison to other original console Mario games, SMS hasn't done so well.

There were different NES bundles as far back as 1986 in the USA iirc, and Super Mario Bros wasn't included in all of them. Consumers had options, just like they didn't have to buy a GC with Mario Sunshine or PS2 with GT3 if they chose not too.

Nope but it also hasn't done too badly either... in fact it's pretty close to Halo's total (around 4.5M). I bet Mario Sunshine would be well over 5M had it been a launch game.

Nope, SMB wasn't bundled until 1986 iirc (and then there were other bundles available, like Gyromite or the core set with no game). It also wasn't ever bundled with Famicom or FDS iirc.

It's still 40 million copies of a game though.

6.81 million comes from Japan straight away- and they are not packed-in games.

Yes, it is. The US version was differnt from the Jap version as you remember. Combine the two (if you wish) and you get 10.11 million...

Just looked it up, Super Mario Bros wasn't bundled with NES until late 1988....

-Core Set (Super Mario Bros) Nov 1988
-Action Set Super Mario Bros + Duck Hunt) Nov 1988
-Power Set (Super Mario Bros + Duck Hunt + World Class Track Meet) Dec 1990

...but you could always buy a NES without Mario. :)

Estimates for Pokemon:

Red/Blue/Green 29.0
Yellow 15.0
Gold/Silver 23.0
Crystal 9.0

Total 76.0

And they are all stand alone games.

Yep, and that explains the high numbers for Duck Hunt as well.

Here's a question.

"Million seller" seems ot have long been considered the watermark of a game being successful. However, for profits on a given title and whether those profits did indeed make the development of that game profitable and worthwhile (and so for example, might support more enteries in a series), what's the real threshold for sales? Obviously it's going to depend on the cost of the game's development. But does there seem to be a general line past which a game is considered "in the black" as opposed to "tanked"?

It also depends how long the game stayed at full price.
