It really kills them inside that they can't claim the top selling console. It's pretty sad how much that means to them.

Makes sense. The console manufacturers from when they started have long been out of the race and they have a decade+ head start of the one(s) still in it.
As March 1995 (PS1 was launched in December 1994 in Japan) NES + GB + SNES had sold in total 141.49 million units therefore since the introduction of the PlayStation brand of consoles Nintendo has sold about 100 million consoles more than what Sony did in the same timeframe.
The headstart in itself isn't the decisive factor why Nintendo is the console manufacturer which sold the most videogame systems (more than than PlayStation and Xbox combined).

Current Sony suits saw the amount of money N consistently made with their exclusives business throughout the years and thought:

The console wars are literally over and Nintendo won like this:

Its not just about the raw numbers. That was also time spent ingratiating themselves with kids and pop culture; building their gaming brand and iconic characters. Its why, for us older folks, those not in the know tended to refer to any game console as "a Nintendo" for a period of time. Its why they could endure through the lean years and come out rosy fresh on the other side.

But but Nintendo is not competing, these numbers mean nothing :messenger_loudly_crying:

Also they don't make home consoles :messenger_loudly_crying:

They just make games for little kids :messenger_loudly_crying:

Now if you remove portables and hybrid console and divide that by the overall console lifecycle in years, that's the REAL number you need to look at. Real gamers know what's up...

Interestingly* - Sony is somewhere around 7B software units 🤷‍♀️

*Actually not interesting at all - just kind of obvious.
Handhelds sold considerably less SW in the decades prior to Switch (and that contributes a lot of those HW totals for Nintendo), and last decade of software has accelerated everywhere (PS4/PS5 contribute over 40% of sales total already, and that'll approach 50% by the time PS6 launches).

By all objective standards (longevity, commercial success and critical acclaim, influence on game design, communication and even hardware, place in pop culture) Nintendo are the number one video game company and there's really no one else coming close. That's why I'll never understand why so many people are still seething impotently at them, hoping for their demise only to get btfo again and again. Might as well accept they'll be here forever and move on, it'll spare you a lot of grief.

This stuff still feels like copium for console warriors to keep a fight going most people are losing interest in.

People do put Nintendo in their own little bubble, but they've consistently made bank outside stumbles like the Virtual Boy or WiiU.

You can't argue with demented fanboyism.

Lol most of those are not "objective" standards.

And people say exclusives don't matter or "anti-consumer" or blah blah blah.
Good exclusives what sales systems….you can argue about it all you want but that a fact!

There are two types of console

Home console
Handheld console

Both are equally valid

Really funny and transparent how folks want to exclude pure game devices from the count, but that logic never extends to people buying consoles for media capabilities isn't it?

But this is not about only the home console. This ranking is about home console plus hybrid console plus portable console. It is about all hardware by a console manufacturer. We knew someone was going to say, "but what about just home consoles". That was to be expected. But there are some Nintendo Home consoles that's not included in this list because they were released either in the first generation or the second generation. Nintendo has released consoles in all generations. I think that all Nintendo hardware should be included, but for some reason this list starts with the NES and not the color TV game 15.
