I went to WAGs boutique and all I got was a sniff
It was all thanks to alpha that I found out about the Smashing Pumpkins. Bloody great band. Ive not lsitened to them in ages though, So I wshoudl go and do that now. My favourite songs are Disarm, Cherub Rock, Ava adore. there is one more, but i cant put my finger on the name.

The smashing Pumpkins actually changed the way i listen to music. I have to compare everything to them (apart from tool).

I was all into the Machina songs played during the Arising! tour... Age of Innocence is still a song I play on guitar for fun, so is I of the Mourning... Glass and the Ghost Children... SIYL

A lot of the songs on Machina are pumpkin worthy, my beef is with the production values--which are completely non pumpkin... And the whole Glass and the Machines of God concept album bullshit was absolutely nuts...

Not to mention that they kept songs like Everlasting Gaze, while songs like Home and Speed Kills (not that I liked the studio version any different) were cut...

So I agree that some of the Machina songs are some of the best Billy wrote, but the album is the worst of the lot...

Download some of the better sourced Arising! shows (especially acoustics) from 99 to hear those songs in the raw... Dross was a helluva song for the live environment, but I feel embarrassed listening to The Imploding Voice on Machina (although they're the same song)
??? Dross is a completely different song. The imploding voice from the arising shows was named Virex, thats probably what youre thinking of.

Woah!

Yes... Machina r0x, and Age of Innocence is one of my faves in that album.

To the original poster, do yourself a favor and pick up Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. It's simply a masterpiece.

I'm also one of those that don't like Adore too much.

I share a surprinsing amount of pleasures with you.....

Also worth mentioning is the Earphoria CD (and there's an accompanying DVD), which is basically a bunch of SP songs live from their heyday, with some great stuff in there. An acoustic version of Cherub Rock, James' Bugg Superstarr, and, my personal favorite, Silverfuck which ends up bleeding into Jackboot, an ripping, 90s rocking, unreleased instrumental B-side. If you watch the live performance of this in London during 1994 or so, it's about as good as things get. Billy breaks a string while rocking, he has hair, James dons a space helment, the set gets trashed, and the crowd, the entire crowd, is jumping like ocean waves.

I don't suppose any other Pumpkin heads here would happen to have some really rare stuff, worth sharing? I'm always on the prowl for rarities, but you reach a point where you think you have it all.

Bobble. yeha it's counted as an album, but it's really just b sides, with a couple of alternate versions of Machina 1 songs (alternate try try Try is SOOOOOOOOOOO GOOD!!!). Seriously, Had the Pumpkins combined the best songs off of Machina 1 and 2 into an ultimate machina album, it would be great. As it is, Machina 1 and 2 are both good albums, but don't touch the rest of their releases IMO.

But yeah, as people ahve already said, Adore is a GREAT album, very close to MCIS and Siamese Dream. And to those thatw er eintroduced throught eh pumpkisn through alpha...hahahaha, the guy was only introduced to them like six months ago. I remember his "SP discovery" on these boards a while back. Err, anyway...

Heh, thanks.

p.s. on mp3 i have some good shit that you may or may not have. rare songs (you probably have who knows), but also some nice live cuts. some stuff i just got recently that i didn't have live is the end is the beginning is the end, where boys fear to tread, transformer, stumbeline, and a few others. pm me if interested ladies

p.s.2. mods if i'm not allowed to do this (these are live songs, not album releases) then i will edit my post out. dont ban me please :(

Maybe this has already been said...but how did you just find the Pumpkins, and why did you trust Alpha to introduce you to good music? :)

'Untitled' is one of the best Pumpkins songs, and hinted at better stuff to come - shame they broke after that.

IMO

1. Starla
2. Soma
3. Bury Me
4. 1979
5. Slunk
6. Untitled
7. Snail (drumming on that song is amazing)
8. For Martha
9. Rhinocerous
10. Siva

Album wise

Gish > *

But then it is probably favourite mainly because of the affection I have for the songs due to memories of good times, plus I saw them live more times on that album than any other - caught their first UK tour after I heard the Lull EP on the John Peel show...

Very greatful to John Peel for that gig - it kicked some serious arse. :D

It not that much of a crazy story, but I ran into Billy Corrigan once. I was in a sort of alternative music store in Royal Oak Michigan on my lunch hour, dressed in a suit (I worked for a bank at the time), I think it was about 1996. I'm just browsing around, looking down at the CDs, then I look up at the guy standing next to me, and see a guy about 6 ft. 5 inches tall, bald, dressed in black, and realize who it is. I didn't say anthing, but after a few minutes some other people came up and asked for an autograph. He was quite nice about it tho, I was impressed. I do remember I heard him talking to the guy he was with about going to the KISS concert that night, I think it was when KISS was doing that first full reunion thing. Maybe he was a member of the KISS army in his youth. :lol :lol

It was just sort of surreal, me in a button down shirt, suit and tie, in this store surrounded by goths, punks, etc, seeing him there, they probably thought I was the freak......

Wasn't that cover of "Taking a Ride with My Best Friend" originally released on vinyl? Or maybe it was on the "Rocket" single? I'm pretty sure some of those earlier singles are pretty rare.

Also, I heard an interview with BC around the time MC was released and he said that he seriously played with the idea of naming that album something like "Baseball City USA". I think he's a huge Cubs fan and that played into that idea.

Oh, can anyone name the word that is continually digitally looped during the song 1979?

Contrary to people that maintain it's "Twelve Again", Billy said in an interview once it's simply "Ooooh Ahhhh"

In other trivia which name the UK artist, album and song which samples the drum beat from Suffer (Gish)?

"Taking a Ride With My Best Friend" is actually Never Let Me Down. It's a Depeche Mode cover. And yeah, it was available on the vinyl Rocket single.

But if you're listening to the greatest hits album, you should try to get your hands on a copy of the Greatest Hits that came with the bonus disc 'Judas 0'. Judas 0 is a b-side disc with 16 tracks i think - but make no mistake, these b-sides aren't crappy or lousy demos, they rawk. (most sp b-sides rawk as much as album cuts

excellent judas 0 tracks:
areoplane flies high (from aeroplane in box set)
marquis in spades (from aeroplane in box set)
set the ray to jerry (from aeroplane box set)
lucky 13 (machina 2)
slow dawn (from machina 2)
saturnine
waiting
soot & stars
blissed & gone

Hmmm, that's interesting. I heard an interview BC the day MC came out and he said it was "eternity".

From www.spfc.org.

"The most frequently asked question about '1979' is, 'What is the 'ooh-ahh-ahh' sound at the end of every phrase?' Flood and I were tracking the song, and I started humming the 'oohs' like a melody line. I sang them to tape, we sampled the pertinent ones, electronically manipulated them, and looped them against the drum beat. One of my favorite songs from the album." -BC (Guitar World 1/97)

Because it is a known fact among my followers that my taste in music >>> yours. I don't listen to fairy j-pop or rattling rocks in a can or those annoying bands who aren't really playing any real music, but that's their alleged "draw" -- so I guess because they're just playing shitty distorted noise they're some sort of geniuses. Yeah, I don't listen to any of that and a majority of GAF does. Obviously, folks such as I and my accomplices Matrix and Eminem are spreading good music throughout this community. Because next thing you know you've got more people listening to some shitty, barely comprehensible crap with screechy lyrics and avoiding the sex of Soundgarden, or Zeppelin, maybe a little Depeche, and some Slipknot (Vol 3. only), some New Order, The Smiths, Burning Brides, Muse, Foo Fighters, Megadeath, Pantera, Slayer (triple layer of skull fucking metal), and don't forget NIN.

I am here to free you, elitist souls of GAF. Help me, help you...help me, help you.

If you wanna rip that, have at it. I've heard what a lot of the forum likes. Most of it I consider miserable(Xiu Xiu anyone?). Once every blue moon there's a good recommendation(The Fire Theft is freakin' great...thanks fart).
But for the most part, most of the stuff I see suggested the most here is really, really, really, really horrible.

Well for the record, I didn't just "find" the Pumpkins. And certainly not through Alpha. I just threw his name out there cuz I like fuckin with him and knew he was an SP fan :) But yeah I was already aware of them and their most well known hits ever since they started playing Siva and Drown on the radio. But because of who I am and the stance I took against 90s American "Alternative" grunge, I never gave them the chance I should have given them back then.

Keep in mind, this style of rock is difficult to adjust to after being stuck in the 80s most of my 31 of years of listenig to music. I refuse to listen to the majority of US alternative and will ALWAYS worship the 80's Brit stuff! So fuck you if you don't like it! The British 80s bands like Depeche Mode, New Order, The Smiths, theThe, and The Cure will ALWAYS reign supreme over anything the Smashing Pumpkins or any other US band for that matter puts out there!!!!!! Recognize!!!!!!

Oh God does Drown, Cherub Rock and Disarm ever rock! They are infectious!

Yes that's the version I got. I plan to listen to it tonight or tomorrow. It's sad that people here are unaware that Never Let Me Down Again is originally a DM track and not an SP track.

By the way, what album is Eye on? And are the tracks on Machina similar in sound to Eye?

It's not from an SP album originally. It first came on the Lost Highway Movie OST and then it came on a limited edition CD that came with some copies of the Machina album.

That's just the nature of covers, particularly with younger listeners. Hell, I bought a Neil Diamond Greatest Hits CD a while back and promptly realized the man, along with Danny Elfman, has written every single song since the 1960s. Who knew Red, Red Wine wasn't really a UB40 song? Besides, Billy Corgan just does amazing covers...his cover of Stevie Nicks' Landslide off Pisces Iscariot, his Thin Lizzy cover of Dancing in the Moonlight off the Disarm single, his covers of Missing Persons' Destination Unknown and the Cars' We're All Clones (both off the Bullet w/Butterfly Wings single from the AFH set), the cover of Essex's Rock On, etc.; they're all great, great stuff. It's hard for me to go back and listen to the originals at times.

I do wish he would shore up more live material however, considering the wealth of it out there. If you want a complete songlist and realize how little is actually available, look no further: http://www.spfc.org/songs-releases/song.html?song_type=-1&song_display=.

Maynard is overrated. In terms of vocals, well, Corgan isn't that great vocalist, but his voice just works perfectly with SP. Lyricswise, Corgan >>>>>>>>>>>> Maynard.
