Am I the only one who hates gambling?

First, let me get out of the way that it's not for any Liberal, social justice reasons. I'm not one of those who will tell you that it "prays on the poor" or is for "desperate people". Those are just more BS victim statements for people who make bad choices. Just like the people against alcohol because "it ruins lives". I can have a drink and be responsible.

I love going to places like Vegas. Hanging out with friends, drinking, entertainment, I like to have a good time. I just literally can't stand gambling. I find no part of it fun. I already know that statistically, I'm going to lose hundreds of dollars by playing. I'm not falling for a trap of the guy they posted on Facebook who won $37,000 that day. It's a business designed to get me to hand my money over, in hopes of me winning money. All of the degenerate gamblers that tell you how much they win, fail to tell you how much they lose.

Kind of yes and no. I feel like poker takes some skill and I'm interested in playing it so thats why I can't fully say that I hate it. But gambling that takes no skill and is all chance is BS.

Oh, thank god, I certainly would’ve read the rest of your post if it was for those reasons.

But to answer your question, no. Every choice in life is a playing of the odds. If people want to play when the odds are stacked against them...well, have fun.

Hate is a strong word for how I feel about it, but I never do it myself. If people want to waste their money go for it. Your money.

I can't speak on anything else, but sports gambling is ridiculously fun and addicting.

But I guess you would have to like sports first.

I certainly derive no enjoyment from it.

My wife does, and she's talked about the excitement and anticipation she feels and how the build up is better than the disappointment of losing while making wins even sweeter, but I just get anxious and either a very mild relief that I didn't duck up if I win or angry at myself for being a fool.

I also don't like that gambling is obviously designed so you'll lose more money than you gain. It's the same reason I don't like loans with interest and have no debt. Value for money is a big deal for me.

I'm just risk averse when it comes to money, more than anything.

Which is weird because I'm a big fan of physical risk. White water rafting, bungie jumping, abseiling down a cliff, zip sliding across valleys or hurtling down a steep trail on a box are all things I'll do without a moments hesitation and adore the thrill of.

Ask me to put a quid in a fruit machine though and I'll look at you like you're suggesting I play Russian roulette.

I also don’t enjoy it. I can understand why people do, but I don’t feel anything other than something akin to Feeding the toilet my cash.
I’m also not really into casinos. Everything is so gaudy. Not for me.

I don't like gambling cards and slot machines that kind of thing. I'm not good at it and have never won. So I never got that hit of feeling like a winner to get me addicted. My friend one time brought a slot machine for thier home and had it set on free play as she enjoyed playing them. Even when I played it for free I never won, I guess I just don't understand how it all works.

I don't like gambling as well. But I have a few friends who are into that. They're like, real degenerate gamblers. They're into poker and slot machines. But mostly poker. I asked one what's in it for you, he says it's the rush. It's an addiction. He still looses way more then he wins but he does it for the thrill. It's not my cup of tea for sure.

nah, I don't like it too for myself. I don't care if people gamble, everyone should be able to do what he wants, as long as no one gets hurt etc.
I just don't find any fun in gambling.

I used to like going to the casinos to play blackjack. I'm pretty good at Texas Holdem too. I think slot machines are stupid though.

I am definitely no a big casino gambler but My wife like going from time to time so I just head to the bar where I go and sit down at the video black jack machines and drink for free whiles she plays slots/roulette until we leave. I just bet as little as possible and tip the bartender well. With what I drink and she loses I'd say over the years me and the house are even and I had a good time.

That being said I used to love going to the Dog Track before they all got shut down. I never bet more than 6 dollars a race and I always had a blast. It's a shame they couldnt have treated those Animals better. They ruined a good thing

I've never done it in real life, but for two weeks I was insanely addicted to Salty Bet along with some other GAFers. Seriously, I spent like 10 hours per day just watching AI vs AI fights and it was great. Even paid for the premium service to get out of the salt mines quicker. That experience showed me that I should probably never try it in real life, even though I'm quite careful with how I spend my money.

I dislike gambling in all of its forms and find it offensive that some states count on lottery/gambling proceeds as part of their budget.

Also, while I'm super conservative I do believe that gambling, particularly lotteries, prey on the poor.

I doubt that anyone that consciously understands BF Skinner's findings could actually enjoy gambling.

Except of course 'the house', they enjoy it very much.

It’s fun. You go in with the expectation to lose a budgeted amount of money, and for the experience. If you win, great, if you lose, you had enjoyment with the games, drinks, socializing, etc.

That’s the way I see it. I’ve never had a bad experience.

For me, it can be fun, but I'm not one prone to chasing losses. I love black jack and poker (don't play anything else), and if I go into a casino I go in having a floor (the total amount I can spend/lose) and a ceiling (an amount that if I win I stop). And I stick to those bookends. I know everyone says gamblers won't tell the truth, and while I might not be a high roller, I'm lifetime positive, I will say that. So for me, it's just a fun diversion. The aura of the casino can be enjoyable if you're not an addict - for me at least. But I don't go very often.

if you mean casino gambling then yeah, that shit sucks unless you are card counting

It's hard to find single deck games much, so the benefit of card counting is lessened. The shoe is too big to get much of an edge through counting - whatever the method.

I actually like the gaudy. I love the atmosphere. I just hate the gambling itself.

I like sports betting when in vegas.

I am into sport so it makes something I already enjoy a bit more fun. I don’t make big bets. I like to bet on the big game go out for a ton of great food and drinks, with the idea that if I win it will cover the bill.

I enjoy a poker game with friends, but that’s much more about the social aspect then the gaming.

i lost like $200 bucks on roulette when I was 19 when that was a lot of money to lose at that age. In retrospect it was a very cheap lesson.

I also buy a lotto ticket every week. The 5 min dreaming it buys me is worth it.

I don’t care for gambling anymore, but liked it more in my early 20s when the novelty was still there. I’ve never been to Vegas but I’ve been to local casinos. What I saw when my eyes were open the last couple of trips: Few groups of young, happy people like you see in adverts- too many old, angry people who look like they had no business wasting cash gambling. Losing all your budgeted cash in an hour and feeling like you just shit it away. Low buy in tables (I made much much less money last time I went) replaced actual dealers with machines and were empty.

Pass.

I don't personally see the attraction. I'd rather the money I have directly correspond to what I've done rather than spin the wheel, literally or figuratively, on the chance I might make more. Casinos and bookmakers pay smart people a lot of money to ensure they come out ahead. I don't have the inclination or the arrogance to sit down and try and think up some plan where I could get one over on them.

Little bets with friends over trivial, token amounts I can understand as a way to add a little bit of stakes to something. But nothing that would actually cause an issue between anyone.

I'd like to visit Vegas some day though. Seems like there's no where else quite like it.

My friend once worked at a bookmakers and as they were shutting up on Christmas Eve he had someone ask him what time they would be open at tomorrow. Seems like a sad world.

I worked in casino for a little under 3 years in my younger days (drink server, then food runner). Made great money, saw a lot of sad people blow their paychecks in one night. Kinda turned me off to gambling. I never got into slots or table games but I do enjoy playing poker (which is a table game, I guess, but I meant blackjack, etc). Other than poker I have rarely gambled.

There were times where I would work an 8 hour graveyard shift, clock out, put on a jacket to cover my badge/uniform, and play poker for a few hours before going home and sleeping. I had some really good nights playing poker, but a lot of really bad nights too, and a couple years ago I stopped playing as often. Haven't been to a poker room in probably two reasons. Multiple reasons for that, not just the saving money aspect, but still.

I love gambling to the point of it being a problem.
I don't have trouble with sports betting or regular Lotto, but slot machines and online slots are my jam.
Haven't put a single cent in slot machines (real life or online) this year and might never play them again. I know if I start to play them again I will be hooked immediately.

OP has never experienced the RUSH that is when you are about to lose your money but win big with your last money.

I think most gamblers know the odds but the hook is with the rush that comes from "beating" the odds. I've won around 1000 euros a few times, it feels great! But I also know how bad it feels to first win big, and then continue playing and lose them all and then some.

I have maybe 20 online casino accounts. I froze the accounts to all of them (it's stupid that it's impossible to actually close the accounts for most online casinos - but at least you can freeze them for a set amount of time). I've been thinking that if for some reason I want to play online casinos again, I will not play in international casinos at all but only in the two Finnish online casinos that exist and put a limit like maybe 15/30e a month for both of them.
With physical slot machines it might be I can't ever put even one coin in. I know I'm unable to put only a couple of euros to the machines and leave it at that, no, it's at least 20e I put in and if I lose it's hard to not put another bill in them. My gf is better with inserting only one or two coins in and play with low bets so the future with physical slot machines for me is probably only going along with my gf and watch her play a bit.
However, I'd LOVE to visit Las Vegas one day and visit the casinos there, so if I ever get that chance I'm definitely going to gamble again.

Are you the only one? Of course not. I'm no mathematics genius, but I understand the statistics well enough to know that "big wins" are extremely rare and just not worth the risk/loss.

Gambling is illegal in Brazil except for the Federal Lottery... figures, huh? It's a total scam.

But if I could, I'd like to visit Vegas one day and gamble a bit... spend $1000 and that's it, winning or losing, no guilty, no greed, just for the fun and experience...

$1000 for me is a ton of fucking tho, so it ain't happening :messenger_grinning_sweat:

For $1000 you can get a hooker and have a way better time

INSTRUCTIONS UNCLEAR!!!, I'm now homeless! OP, what have you done!?!? Funny I see this thread, as I was at a gas station this morning behind a lady who looked a little uh, trashy i guess, and thought, I bet she's gonna get a lotto or scratch off. Yup, she got 2 scratch offs.

I hate traditional gambling as I see no fun in it. But I gamble with my life every time I take my bike out and go over the speed limit, so I can kinda understand the drive.
