Does anyone have any experience with the Dragon Ball Kai stuff? I'm looking at the Bluray and it is pretty cheap. I've never seen even one episode of Kai, but I've watched an unhealthy amount of the original dub back in the day.

I think you've made your decision but I just had to chime in, Kai is great but it almost feels like a new show. The dub has a much better and more faithful script and the pacing is world's better than the original.

Still, some of the filler was good and I sort of did like the dub music. Thankfully Funimation is putting the original Z on Blu-ray starting later this year and it actually looks pretty good.

For anyone trying to decide between DBZ sets, I did a list for that DBZ BR thread:

  • Original VHS/DVDs
+ The DVDs were finished for all of Z, actually.
    - However, the DVDs only had 2 or 3 episodes per set.
    - VHS was discontinued before the series midpoint, I believe.

  • Dragon Ball Z Uncut
+ New dub (I thought, might not be the case), optional Japanese music included, has no edits from original material whatsoever
    - Dicontinued after like two sets

  • Orange Brick Sets
+ Lots of episodes per box set, something like 35+ I think. So that's pretty insane.
+ Both the Japanese music/voices and American broadcast music/dub.
+ 16:9 widescreen ratio, but at the cost of...
    - Episodes being cropped to hell, shaving off like 20% of the image.
+/- Image quality is significantly cleaner than any other DBZ DVD release, including Dragon Box, but some colors are off and some edges are blurry.

  • Dragon Box Sets
+ Complete re-master using original footage in-house at series creator Toei. More faithful colors
    + Completely uncut and unedited.
+ Obviously the Funimation release has the American dub, with the Japanese voices optional.
    - Lacks the American broadcast music, as Funimation couldn't fit it onto the DVDs. No matter your feelings on it, choice is still better than no choice.
    - 4:3, but it's the original ratio so most people probably don't care.

  • Dragon Ball Z Kai
    + On Blu-ray and DVD.
+ Basically an up-resing of DBZ footage, but preserves colors.
+/- Some footage and scenes have been redrawn digitally.
+/- Completely new music, not using DBZ's original Japanese or American dub music. It's orchestrated fair that I personally think suits the new series, but the old dub music will always have a place in my heart. And actually, as mentioned, due to plagiarism claims, all music will be replaced with the original Japanese score in the later episodes and any re-issues. Most people have found the new music direction to be downright terrible.
+/- Oddly, there's cropping for 16:9 on the DVD and broadcasted TV versions, but the Blu-ray is completely 4:3 (yet still 1080p.)
+/- Cuts out all the filler, whether it's filler arcs (which can be quite good) or the filler in fights (so they don't stand around for eps on-end powering up*.) *Hyperbole
    - Doesn't cover the Buu saga. Basically just stops when Gohan defeats Perfect Cell. I think this is where Z/the manga originally should have ended, but there's no getting around the fact that Kai is just incomplete. And there are some good parts in the Buu saga, mostly Majin Vegeta.
    - Offers less than 1/3 of episodes per set as the Orange Boxes, clocking in at 13 eps for each release. Funimation has even started bundling Kai sets together at retail stores to try and make it seem like a good value.

  • Dragon Ball Z (Blu-ray)
+ Well, it's ALL of DBZ on Blu-ray. Filler, Buu saga, etc. So just comparing what's available on Blu-ray, this set of releases will offer a more complete DBZ experience.
+ This is a plus for me... it won't have any redrawn scenes like Kai does. I wanted to like them but they are just so out of place. Either give me an entire new series that looks like that Toei, or don't bother. (Using new animation for the openings and endings is fine, though.)
+ Confirmed to offer both the original American audio in Dolby TrueHD, with the Japanese audio presumably along for the ride as well (although, it's unconfirmed if it will be the same quality. But it should be as good as what's been on the DVD's.)
+/- Doesn't offer the value of the Orange Brick sets, only 17 or so episodes per box. Still, compares favorably with the amount included in each Kai release.
+/- It's 4:3 and uses a new transfer that they actually seem to be putting some effort into. Time will tell if it stacks up to Kai or the Dragon Boxes, though.
    - Could be discontinued later on. 17 episodes per set equals to roughly 18 sets they'll have to release.

Okay I don't watch a lot of anime. I loved cowboy bebop, and FLCL. Practically had a shrine for evangelion. But that's it. Every anime I've ever watched other then those (oh and akira and robotech) I never liked. Chobits is something I've never heard of. It's some girl computer? Im afraid to research more because I started to end up in some strange corners of the internet... can someone here tell me if Its good and your wager if someone like me might like it?
Anyone?

EDIT: Yeah I don't think its for me.

People who still don't buy Gankutsuou at $14 are what's wrong with the world.

I just realized the majority of this stuff is on Netflix Streaming. Guess I won't cancel my streaming account after all.

I just added a bunch to Netflix.

Stuff I'm gonna buy on Blu Ray I think:

Evangelion 2.22
Tekkon Kinkreet
Paprika
Summer Wars

Are those good?

Remember when FLCL was 30 bucks for 2 episodes?

Jesus.

I have suppressed the memory of how much I paid to import the japanese volumes of FLCL. One episode per DVD. Japanese DVD prices. You do the math.

Just ordered them. If they suck I'm gonna kill you!
come at me bro!

Just remember to make a thread about Rebuild after you watch it, there hasn't been an Evangelion thread for over a week now.

Samurai Champloo and Summer Wars is really tempting...BUT I gotta pay for rent. :( I need to find some quick cash before the 8th!

Bebop needs to come out in Blu Ray.
This. I have it all on DVD, but I'd buy it all again if they released it on Blu Ray.

I tried watching FLCL on Netflix and I don't know if that's for me. Granted, I didn't give it time at all (only about 5 minutes) but everything seemed so random and weird.

You are richly rewarded in FLCL for paying very close attention to the non-insane stuff between the segments that play more like animated music videos for The Pillows than a coherent story. There's something for everyone in there but I recognize that it's a lot to get through an unprepared skull at once. At the very least it's very high quality nonsense.

Been meaning to pick up Samurai Champloo, might have to get the bluray...

Edit: if I like Samurai, any other suggestions? Is Lupin on bluray?

Ok, so I already have Season 1 and 2 of the orange bricks for DBZ. Should I just get the remaining sets with this deal? The cropping doesnt bother me because personally I dont remember the original scenes like, detail for detail. I remember the transfers looking pretty nice too. How are the DBGT box sets like these?

The GT sets are un-cropped 4:3 and don't have any filters, from what I remember. I'm thinking of getting that complete series set, I didn't think highly of GT but I saw on YouTube how Goku takes out Omega Shenron, and it looked pretty good. May as well give it another shot.

<3

You're welcome.

Where can I find a shot comparison between a DVD release and a BD release that's an upscale of the SD master? The difference between some of the old and BD releases is a dollar, but it also represents the difference between being able to watch it on my old laptop or not. I'd want a pretty significant gain in image quality to give that up. Referring specifically to the BD release of FMP's first season.

Hmm I always wanted to watch Cashern Sins....

Screw it, will order the Complete Collection and Yu Yu Hakusho volume 1 on Blu-Ray.

Too good of deal to not pass up.

It doesn't actually have that green bar over his face on the cover itself, does it?

Well, at least those weren't very compressed, I bet. The worst release was the Ultimate box set.

FLCL and both Evangelion movies ordered along with a book I was holding off on. Half of it was paid for with credit I had forgotten about. Nice.

So I just ordered:

Yu Yu Hakusho Season 1/2 (Blu Ray)
DBZ Kai Parts 1-4 (Blu Ray)
Eva 2.22 (Blu Ray)
Samurai Champloo Complete Series (Gru Ray)

My wallet hurts too :(

I got these three and Yu-Yu-Hakusho. Don't worry man, it's worth all the coin. Although, DAMN YOU OP FOR MAKING MY WALLET CRY. Thank you OP, for making my hear soar.

Just chiming in to say I ordered the Samurai Champloo Boxset and the School Rumble Boxset. I'd like to buy some of the seasons of Yu Yu Hakusho, but I have to make sure that I pay my bills first haha.

This post is just godlike, man. I think I may be more confused about whether or not we'll ever have a complete Dragon Ball Z collection with all the bells and whistles though.

Thanks a lot.

Thanks. :D I think Funi's Blu-ray set could end up being the best, most completed one (for just Z of course.) But it all depends on if they finish it, and how the transfer compares to the Dragon Boxes/DBZ Kai.
