American Censorship: Round 2

this is so stupid, I am not even from the USA but if this goes through, I am pretty sure other countries will look into that bullshit too

I am completely opposed to SOPA. I think it could lead to a terrible precedent.

That being said - People who oppose SOPA because you want to torrent and file share products that you don't own: go fuck yourself. You don't have a fucking right to pirate copyrighted material and hijacking a legitimate debate because you want to continue to squander creativity in the entertainment industry. It's extremely dangerous, especially to the hundreds of people who DO ALL THIS WORK TO ENTERTAIN YOU.

It seems like it's every other week that people have to get together and try to stop some bill that the government is trying to pass. Kind of sickening when you think about it.

I stopped watching the video because of the depressingly low amount of knowledge being spewed around. Hopefully this doesn't pass.

99% of people don't even know this is happening, nor do they know what it would do if enacted.

Also, Idol's on or some shit

to be fair, i doubt the media is covering this much. add in the fact that we can't do shit about it, and its pretty bleak to even think about

How are Americans not rioting?

I'm guessing it's a "boy who cried wolf" sort of scenario. These things come up relatively often and nothing really ever comes from them. This one in particular is so ludicrous that I don't think people even believe it to be real.

This is absolutely pathetic. I can't believe that incompetent people are making major decisions for a whole country that could affect every other country on the planet that makes use of the internet.

I'm all for them shutting down torrent and pirate sites. As long as there is some sort of verification process, and appeal process, I'm OK with it.

It's not all that different from shutting down a street vendor in New York who sells counterfeit Nike shoes, etc.

I look forward to the internet rage when they shut down popular pirate sites. lol

NO BUT THEY'RE NOT STEALING THEY'RE JUST COPYING IT'S LIKE FREE ADVERTISEMENT Y'ALL! Entertainment companies have a right to protect their revenues streams and their copyrighted products. This is not the way to go about it.

Also, thanks to you nerds and your filesharing, you won't get as many nerd-skewing shows. Thanks nerds.

What is wrong with the way they're going about it?

Pretty much. These people in the video clearly have no fucking clue.

This bill is way too overreaching and I'm extremely uncomfortable with the federal government and its entities having the ability to block out websites that do host user generated content. I'm not much of a conspiracy theorist and I tend to think that people use slippery slope arguments too much in civil debate, but I'm chilled by the effects of what this legislation could do to sites like Google, Wikipedia, Youtube, etc. There are legitimate reasons to oppose this beyond the fact that it would stop people from being able to torrent and file share.

That being said, I'm opposed to people who believe there is a right to pirate content that they do not have license to. On other (larger) boards, they've hijacked the debate and create a hive mentality of circle jerking to the threat of big brother trying to stop them from downloading the latest episode of Community.

Pirates(those who are leaking copyrighted materials) are smart enough to just get around this shit. It's just gonna ruin the internet for the rest of us.

SOPA - Shit On People of America. I dislike the fact that lot of these people are not tech savvy, if I may. That's how I feel. They shouldn't even open their mouths.

That's the other issue. It'll be very easy to get around for those who are technically savvy (not Congressman).

It's still a huge problem that needs to be dealt with in countries that do allow these sites to host files. Sites like megavideo, rapidshare, etc. also need to start doing their part and policing their own stuff more rigorously so they don't fuck it up for the rest of us. The industry needs to find a way to make legally watching something easier/more lucrative to those who would do it.

I think people just have this mentality that the internet is the wild wild west and it's always going to stay that way. It's not, and anyone who thought it would was kidding themselves. Just like not paying tax on Amazon, I've always expected that to change, it was just a matter of when it happened.

The internet is awesome, and it allows us all to do so many amazing things now. Unfortunately it's being used to literally destroy certain industries, and that's unacceptable. So having a law in place where they can shut down obvious pirate/torrent sites seems logical. Those sites can appeal these things, and they'll get their day in court so to speak.

Maybe I'm just weird, but I can't think of a single site I visit that could be the target of such a law. If you don't care about pirate/torrent sites I don't see how this bill concerns you. Just like I don't concern myself with the cops shutting down the street vendor selling counterfeit Nikes.

Sure, you may have tiny sites that still pop up and distribute things illegally. But the major sites, the ones that truly do damage to these publishers, they won't exist. That is the key here.

No one can stop all illegal copyright activity. But they can make a huge dent in it, and any site that begins to get bigger will get shut down before it even matters. This is going to have a huge effect on piracy IMO.

If this passes it will not stop pirates. They will not all stop and say "Well, I guess we'll stop pirating now". They will simply find another way to facilitate pirating on the internet.

Considering the pirates are smarter than members of Congress, this will happen, guaranteed.

The only thing that will come of this is collateral damage once misused and a lot of angry people.

How often are torrents used for legal purposes? I can think of exactly one example I experienced where they distributed some stuff for the launch of Star Trek: Online

the NASA did use torrents to get images and stuff to the people, also I am linux user and pretty much every distribution is also released by torrent

and if I remember correctly did Metal Gear Online on the ps3 used torrent to for getting patches if you wanted

Rep. Watt: "We don't need experts. People on both sides have enough money and influence to figure this one out".

He said that...out of his own mouth.

people being to harsh about torrents.
you can't prohibit two or more people from connecting their computers to share documents.

It's like they don't even give a shit anymore about hiding the fact that it's all about corporate interests. Jesus fucking christ that's cynical.

He LITERALLY, word for word, said that during an argument about why they need to bring experts in to answer questions about the bill.
That's barely a step above arguing "You're stupid" and sticking your fingers in your ears while shouting "la la la la la."
