Yeah man, everything was cool until the soldiers started butchering. They didn't have room for all the weapon stockpiles being handed over, the tips came in by the hundreds daily.

Pretty much, it's a very subjective thing of "how much you can handle" so to speak. There are mental exams but how do you know that they don't start having problems before that? In no way are these actions right but some are definitely changed by the situation they are in everyday. War has always has terrible consequences like this.

Psychiatric homes for down-and-out veterans do studies, and results look like war is rarely the cause of serious mental problems, but it does seriously exacerbate them if they existed prior (addiction included).

Soldiers lose all respect for locals, think they're just as bad as the guys shooting guns.
Locals, outraged, treat soldiers like shit and get them killed.

Here's a more accurate description:

Soldiers invade country unprovoked, hundreds of civis killed inadvertently, get treated like shit and get killed by locals.
Soldiers murder innocents in high-profile cases
Locals, outraged, treat soldiers like shit and get them killed.

Harboring terrorists that executed an attack on a foreign nation is hardly what I would call unprovoked.

As for inadvertent death, I think it's difficult to appreciate the complexity of fighting an enemy that is one part political party, religious movement, and mafia.

American soldiers aren't busting down every door and mowing through civilians like it ain't no thing. More often, it's a rare case where that terrorist-hoarding house across the street is finally vaporized by a guided missile, and as a piece of brick starts to work its way through your skull, you think that perhaps you should have reported them 9 months ago.
