American Gods |OT| You Had Me At Bryan Fuller - Sundays on Starz

Audrey is hilarious. I'll admit I didn't like her during the graveyard scene, but she had me laughing hard in every scene she had with Laura in this ep.

"Does Shadow know?"
"Yeah, he knows. I tried to fuck him. On your grave. Only seemed fair."

Audrey's scene was great cus she reacted like a normal person would. I hate when situations like that happen in other shows and no one freaks the fuck out or if they do they faint, fade to black, and show the freak out off screen and now they're mostly cool with it. Or something like that, you guys know what I mean, so it was really fun to see her almost shit herself with fear and confusion.

I loved that, especially since everyone else on this show is so indifferent to crazy shit. Even Laura was shoulder shrugging about being dead. Audrey's a real one.

I just paid $9 for a sub to Starz through June 21 so I can watch this show in real time

Totally worth it

Edit: Fuck episode 4 was so good that was like worth $9 on its own

I enjoyed the episode. Without spoiling too much, is Laura much like Shadow gonna be another character "caught in the middle" of the war of Gods, or does the show categorizes "Zombie" (queen?) as a modern American god?

Neither. She's basically an outside party to everything with a keen interest in Shadow and operates from that vantage point.

Did anyone else catch the hint Wednesday was presumably watching/keeping tabs on them before they died?
(Odin's ravens (are we still spoilering the fact he's Odin? They call him Wotan FFS)

Aw man, I was just about to post this. I thought it was a nice touch, and
hints that much more is going on than is currently known.

I'm not so sure that's commonly known? I didn't know prior to reading that up.
Also, Wednesday is derived from Old English, and means 'day of Odin''

For the past 3 weeks I would watch an episode of this show and have no idea what I just watched.

Then this week came and it was surprisingly coherent. It was definitely a nice episode that was weird but funny and sad at the same time.

Great episode, I love what they did with Audrey in this.

Ibis and Jaquel showed up out of nowhere though.

I loved how they presented Laura here. She has chronic depression and doesn't like herself, yet they didn't make her look like a victim. Her behavior when Shadow was in prison felt realistic.

Agreed. I like the frank and honest tone the show approaches these topics with. It's quite the contrast to Fuller's flamboyant visuals, but it works.

For those who think Laura is worse than Wednesday, I think you might have missed some hints.

I've read the book and honestly don't remember if this is even in it, but just in case that has given me an edge in spotting the clues:

A few times, a black raven or two show up in the flashbacks. Wednesday's been orchestrating this shit for a long time. Odds are he's the one that got Shadow into jail in the first place by causing his heist to go wrong.

Laura is still a user of a person and pretty horrible.

FWIW, I was laughing like crazy at her friend's reaction to seeing her after her death.

Potential viewer here. How rooted in reality is it? I see mentions of gods? Does it build tension or is it action packed?

The premise is that belief calls "gods" into existence. So you have immigrants bringing the old gods from the old world into America, but it's also expanded to include anything there is a strong belief in, so leprechauns, pixies, etc. Think Norse, Egyptian, Abrahamic, etc. Then there are the new gods of tech, media, etc.

It's more suspenseful than action packed, but the action scenes are well done. It is also dark, bloody and violent. Lots of sex and violence in this one.

So it's not rooted in reality, more like rooted in faith.

so when anubis said she will only get darkness because she believes in nothing, is that really how this works? so suicide bombers get their 70 virgins? you just need to believe?

Really enjoyed the episode and it felt like a good change of pace. Probably Ricky Whittle's best episode too.

Well, I'm not sure they'll get into that but going by Fadil's experience it depends on a mix of belief and sincerity. I'm clueless when it comes to Islamic notions of paradise but I assume there is some element of penultimate judgement there as well.

Kind of a weird episode that only picked up on the latter half---was hoping for more clarity on the coin situation as well as them doing the solid of not pulling a repeat cliffhanger because Come On~

Not necessarily. It seems to imply that the good and bad of your distinct religion will be the ones you deal with, but the scales will always be the deciding factor. So if you were a shit you're not getting the virgins. You're going to hell (for a suicide bomber specifically I guess that depends on how much influence Allah would have on the scales' decision making). Since she believed in nothing, she was going to nothing regardless of what the scales said.

Or at least that's how I see it.

Laura's got that "I have no excuse but I've come to terms with that" look down

I don't think Anubis is the only god of death/gatekeeper to the afterlife. His visit to Mrs. Fadil makes sense because she remembers his pantheon's stories from her childhood, and it's probably where her most earnest belief lies. I struggled with this question last night, wondering why Anubis would be the one to judge Laura, then I realized that she was working in an Egyptian-themed casino for a good decade. We got a lot of establishing shots of Anubis at the very start, as well as Toth and Horus. You could say the casino was a kind of temple. It must've rubbed off on her enough that Anubis extended the courtesy of his judgement but Laura refused it and there was nothing else left for her.

Anubis literally looking over Laura's shoulder.

Great episode with some good humor. Really wasn't expecting it to be her who saved him. Guess the lucky coin is what brought her back and made her a super strong zombie? Also, that exploding dick kick was hilarious.

I really wish I didn't have to wait a week.

Honestly with the whole multiple Jesuses walking around and how Neiil Gaiman interpretation of Hell in Sandmanit's possible if they sincerely believe in their interpretations it could be judge by the Allah that celebrates it unless someone like Anubis nabs them

Though i can't remember how it works in the book

that was my feelings during the novel. Like she's a very interesting character but the whole time I'm just thinking "you were fucking that guy for years while your husband is in jail calling you in hopes of coming out"

I just can't give a fuck about her.

yup. didnt find her compelling in the book. cant find her compelling here.

that episode was almost entirely a miss for me because it was a character i just dont care about not advancing the plot

I'm pretty sure in the book it's the religion you believe in that you get for the afterlife, albeit, you get judged by their rules. So suicide bombers aren't going to actually get the good afterlife, because that's not what you actually get in Islam for being a mass murderer of innocents.

I'm pretty sure that when Shadow is on the tree holding Wednesday's vigil, he dies and goes to the afterlife and Anubis mentions how normally he'd get someone else, but because they knew each other, he'd do the afterlife stuff for him. Unless I'm completely remembering stuff wrong.

Good to see Emily Browning again. Must say i never saw her in anything anymore after Sucker Punch.

She was alright in Legend, starring Tom Hardy and Tom Hardy.

So afterlife is consistent no matter the persons belief while the gods aren't just to be clear it's been long since i read the book

Yes and no. On death, I believe you end up being claimed by whatever religion your belief was closest to. If you don't believe in anything, you're free game I think. If a god has taken an interest in you they can claim you (this sort of happens in the books at some point I think) but otherwise, if you don't believe in anything you're just going to cease to exist.
