Chris Daughtry also had a successful first album. His second album hasn't done so well. But the problem is that he didn't even win. Taylor Hicks won that season and he's been one of the biggest bombs as a winner.
.

His second album sold 269,000 copies it's first week and is close to 1 million now. For the music industry in it's current state, those are great numbers. Carrie, Daughtry, and Kelly really are the only Idol's still relevant though.

I'd say Simon probably truly lost it with the show when Adam lost. It was beyond obvious he did not want Kris to win.

That album came out in July of last year and still hasn't sold a million in the US yet. By comparison his previous album sold 4.5m in the US. So that second album would be lucky to even reach half the sales of the first album. But he wouldn't be the first AI contestant to see their sales plummet quite a bit from album to album. Clay Aiken started out huge with two million sellers. But his last album has only sold 163k.

"I am a big manflower (?) I blossom out petals" etc. Wth is going on?

'Idol' producers want Howard Stern to replace Cowell [New York Post]

An insider said that producers of the hit Fox show say Stern, America's highest-paid radio personality, is their top choice to take over from Cowell, who leaves at the end of this season. They approached the King of All Media after he repeatedly mentioned on-air that his exclusive Sirius XM Radio deal expires next January and he was open to other offers.

Howard Stern "They know he would be great TV and would clash with the other judges such as Ellen DeGeneres and the contestants. 'Idol' will do what it takes to sign him."

But a second source told us Stern hasn't made the "Idol" talks easy, and has been giving out mixed messages about his intentions.

"Despite what he's been saying on-air, Howard isn't ready to leave radio and would like to stay on at Sirius," the source said. "We believe this is a ploy to make Sirius pay up and keep him on his huge contract. But if Sirius can't pay him the money he wants, he may negotiate to film 'Idol' on the side."

Stern is also believed to be reluctant to commit to a show that would require him to tour the US as a judge and spend much of the year in Los Angeles.

He recently said, somewhat cryptically, "I was approached by a major TV network to take over a TV show and leave here and do that next year -- and I did turn it down . . . I'm not even sure if I want to be working. I'm waiting to see what happens."

Calls to Stern's agent and producer were not returned. A rep for FOX declined to comment.

I doubt this will go off, but it's still pretty interesting.

did anyone watch?

why didn't they show much of the asian guy? ;(

he's a minority in the show. give him TV gime!

and the two groups that did Lady gaga's Bad Romance. the first one that went first sucked ass compared to the next group.

they barely show any singing, i just watched an hour of socially inept people trying to work in groups and some weight lifter on the phone with his wife whose in labor

I wonder what happened to that guy with the Faux Hawk and the guitar who barely made it. I really like the grit in his voice and hoped he would continue on.

Oh well, it's on tonight. 2 hrs. long at that.

I see idol is still edging toward the X-factor.

Jessica was definitely better than crying brooke white 2.0.

I'm normally immune to sob stories, but I kinda feel bad for Angela Martin (daughter with rare disease, dad died, jail, mom went missing right before Hollywood Week, and now failing at her last shot on the show due to age limit). She surely deserved a spot over that Haley girl - her "I'm Yours" was excruciating.

True, I liked him quite a bit more than some of the others that got in. Of course, once it was down to him and Anthony, I already knew what the outcome was going to be.

I'm actually pretty happy that Kara addressed one of the problems I have with the show. They tend to pick people with bigger voices instead of the more unique ones or even people who can keep a "flow" going and don't have to pause after every other note or so.

and I want to know the reason for Thaddeus not making it. high praises from the beginning. and a no from them.

Teh drama. Since season 5, American Idol has been a tv show first, talent competition second.

I didn't particularly care for him but I was really surprised that he didn't make it....and REALLY felt bad for Angela ;_;

Seems like the girls have more potential this year, producers bias not withstanding it just seems so.

Not sure why some think the show "isn't relevant" because it isn't cranking out megastars on a yearly basis. Its a good drama with covers that range from plain bad to downright spectacular. Honestly the top few on the show each year can sing circles around most of our currently popular top40, pop and pop spin-off genres (such as underwood in pop/western).

Mass "success" is something far harder to predict than "singing ability". Hell, kraft singles are probably by FAR the best selling cheese in the country but it doesn't mean they aren't utter crap as cheese goes. Underwood and Clarkson have done the best because of timing (8 and 4 years ago was a better market), they are female (far easier to market), and they are marketable to a mass audience (they don't offend and are easily definable into their genres).

Haley will get the Fantasia/Carrie vote :)

Haley reminds me of Janay Castine from season 4, the difference being that Janay waited until the live rounds to look like a nervous wreck.

I'm actually pretty pleased with the 24.

I don't think Janell Wheeler (I think she got in for looks to be honest) or Haeley Vaughn should have made it though. Angela Martin should have made it but I can understand why she didn't, she has a record and isn't exactly the most original singer the show has seen. I also really liked Shelby Dressel (the girl with partial face paralysis), to bad she didn't make it in the top 24.

I'm pretty satisfied with the top 12 men.

So far my favorites are Crystal Bowersox (She's not a looker but the girl has some pipes), Lillian Scott (Really like the tone of her voice) and Big Mike.

:lol. it begins.

left guy out, right guy in.

“It has been determined that Chris Golightly is ineligible to continue in the competition,” a press release from FOX says. “American Idol contestant Tim Urban has replaced Golightly as part of the Top 24.”
Hours after the disqualification was revealed, host Ryan Seacrest posted the same statement on his Twitter page, where he also announced that for the first time this year’s contestants will have MySpace, Twitter and Facebook pages on the Idol hub. Seacrest did not elaborate on why Golightly was booted.

I bet he had nudie pictures up on his myspace page or something. they must have found something about that guy for him to get the boot out of top 24.

From what I understand, he had a boyband contract that had expired before he auditioned, but he didn't tell producers about it, so he got DQ'd.
Well that's a boring thing then. He looks like he came from the O-Town band anyways.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I miss Paula and her crazy antics, well mostly her back and forth with Simon. Everyone but Cowell is just boring as fuck. Even Simon seems utterly bored and indifferent this season.

Shit song after shit song after shit song.

These girls fucking suck. I'd send 1-7 home. I'm flipping back and forth to the Cavs game. Tonight has been awful so far.

ETA: None of these girls are as good as I originally thought they were. I want my money back >:(

If I were on idol, I would not pick "Feeling Good". It's the only song that has taken out two people on the same night and almost taken out Adam last year.

I hope one of the blondes and girl who almost made it to go home.

Jebus when the winter games went to commercial I flipped to AI three times and thought it was some karaoke guest night.

I hope Ryan was joking about him reading about simon's comment to the NYPost about it's the girl's year :lol. god they suck. I hope the guys do better. I'm rooting for the asian guy as i know he'll be technical (anal) throughout his song. Hopefully he doesn't show it.

They're all awful.

Fat Dude who sang Paula Abdul's Straight Up is a shoe-in. I am calling it now. He wins the season.

Has anyone id'd the record company plants yet?

Dude that Bowersox chick needs some basic dental hygene. I can't look at her when she sings her mouth is gross.
Agreed. But I like her more than most of the others, if not more than all of them.

Her obvious disdain for the show is actually annoying and offputting. I don't think going on American Idol has the most artistic integrity in the universe either, but c'mon.

Cowell should have left years ago and killed this show already.

Ellen.. I like her but she adds nothing. "You're great. Really great. You have more in you. But you're great." Ad nauseum.

Not a good night for the girls. Bowersox was the best. A few others had some flashes of good here & there. Haley was *horrible*. I thought it was a mistake to put her through last week. I liked platinum blonde guitar girl (fixing a hole) and macrame crying girl (you take me the way I am). Oh, and I also liked Siobahn (Wicked Game). She's got great control and a huge range, and I'm surprised the judges didn't comment on that, instead wanting more Stevie Wonder. I like that she did something different that showed off her technical abilities.

I feel kind of bad, but her teeth are a deal breaker for me. So disgusting. But she is the best so far.

Anyway, bad first night for the girls, maybe they'll settle down next week.

Ellen is great. Don't miss Paula at all.

Last night's episode almost convinced me to give up on the rest of the season, most of the people I felt were solid to great ended up blowing chunks :(

And... Ashley is extremely hot.

If she does well in the competition, she'll be able to afford to get her teeth fixed. I've seen this happen with previous Idol contestants (see Elliott Yamin for example).
