You should try getting the Japanese versions. Play-Asia and Nippon-Yissan are probably your best bets.

I think I would assume that any sort of other game amiibos wouldn't save data the same way a Smash Amiibo would.
So for instance, a Mario Party Mario wouldn't be a Figure Player in Smash. Maybe you could use it to summon a CPU character on your side or something in the middle of a battle, or perhaps just using it to randomly get Trophies/Coins/Custom Abilities/Equipment.
I think that maybe once they put out other figures for other games, they might change the displays in stores. I have a feeling though it might be an uphill battle with consumers who don't understand the difference between figures. Skylanders features a little check/X on the sides of the box that show what games they're compatible with. It'll have to be made clear on the boxes that other game amiibos will not function the same, but you can still get bonuses.
Perhaps I'm mistaken, but I had thought Nintendo stated that amiibo can indeed save the same data between games, but that you could only save one game at a time. So, Smash Mario could be used as a FP in smash, or maybe a custom character in a mario sports game, but you would have to lose your smash data on the figure. Either way, you're right that it'll cause headaches.
I had a Rosalina import locked down, but canceled it...can't justify the extra cost (even if it is just a few dollars more). I've had good luck with amiibo, and I've nabbed every one of them that I've wanted to buy without issue (aside from Little Mac, but I have one secured through a trade with a friend for one of my extra Pits) so I'll chance it and check my local Targets at launch. There are four relatively close to me.
If Target does re-open pre-orders, I'll gladly pre-order. Otherwise, I'll wait it out...and if it becomes a hassle, maybe I'll import after we get our tax refund.

I don't know if amazon.jp would ship here, since my brother had to get WFT and Villager shipped to him first, and then send it himself to Toronto

I just completed my first creepy Craig's List transaction. I had an extra Pit and I traded a guy in my town for a Captain Falcon. The dude ended up being pretty cool, but the situation was kinda weird and I almost bolted out of there.

Guess Captain Falcon just had a restock. Toys R Us in Toms River, New Jersey has like 25 Captain Falcon Amiibos on the shelves. No Pit though.
As many of you have said, collecting amiibo can take one on a dark path of figure collecting. Well unfortunately I just found these Kingdom Hearts figurines:
My god they are beautiful! Does anyone have any of these? How is the size compared to amiibo? If so could I see pics of the two together? Also may have found a place to purchase either one of the above two waves for an okay price but can't decide which ones I like more! They both have pros and cons :/

That's not a bad size, I mostly just wanted to make sure they'd fit in my baseball bat case with the amiibo...or maybe they should be with Disney Infinity...

From what I've noticed in my area in Ohio, Best Buy is the absolute worst place for Amiibo availability. Every BB store I've walked into looks like this.

The one in Hurst is much worse, although it had one Samus when I visited. The one that's close to my house just has Link.

Even just looking for amiibo, I've already ended up buying new Skylanders for the first time in years. I also got a nice looking Link statue for Christmas, and the MM collector's edition is giving me another figure... the temptation to start going for more figures is strong.

My son got one and they're ok. My complaints are that the clear plastic doesn't seem to stay in place that well. The individual square spaces for each figure, I think, is a little too big and is wasted space that could've been used for more figures.
The smash bros bundle is back at walmart.com. You get the game and 3 amiibos for $89. Comes to about $10 per amiibo, which is nice, but not spectacular. Still, might be a good deal if you still need the game.
