Amiibo Discussion Thread 2: I Got 99 Pre-orders But A Rosalina Ain't One

It's insane that, even pre-orders sell out in under 5 min. And if you don't get a pre-order, you might be fucked and NEVER get it. This idea that, you have to be tied to your computer using notifications, and have to get your pre-order in within 5 min from when it went up on some of these Amiibos.

THAT IS INSANE. Absolutely insane. Something doesn't seem right here.

Either these are severely under-supplied. Or Scalpers are out in full force. It's prob a mix of both. But damn.

Yeah, wave 4 preorders are more likely going to be sold out pretty fast.

I got a Yoshi and Link ordered from Best Buy yesterday. I have bought all of mine from them or Amazon. I may go out and try and get the TRU and Target exclusives on release but I'm spending way too much time checking availability. Just not going to stress over them anymore. It kinda takes all the fun out of it anyway.

I never thought that these would be this hard to buy. It's just crazy that with the holiday and all that they are so under produced. IDK, maybe they aren't and it's just become the "hot" thing for scalpers to buy up so it just seems that way. I had to run a errand this morning so I thought I would stop by TRU and there were like 6 guys waiting outside the door as they opened. 4 of them power walked straight to the amiibo section. I looked through the Lego section and then headed back to the games. I had to try really hard to not laugh at them standing there in front of a half empty section of Marios and Kirbys. I always thought it was funny back when I worked there in 97-00 all these grown men running to the Hot Wheels and Pokemon Cards. It was especially nice to toss them oout cause they would shove kids out of the way during the summer.
Why was the first thing I thought of this?

I know. Honestly if it wasn't for people in this thread posting restocks I probably wouldn't have gotten Pit or Capt. Falcon.

@-Horizon- That's actually fairly accurate. Just with 8-15 people instead of 2.

Oh god. I might've just taken my loss and stood back and got that all on video lol.

I've been on both ends of the scalping spectrum.

I used to search out old rare games and flip them on eBay right away. However, I would always start the bidding at 99 cents. It came back to bite me a couple of times but, more times than not, it worked to may advantage.

This past fall, I ended up paying over $1000 for a ticket to Game 7 of the World Series.

So I can understand both sides, really. There's no reason to blame anyone except for the people willing to pay crazy prices!

Ouch

I would only pay that for a private Zelda event :P

It's a fuck up on all fronts.

Nintendo under supplied. Straight up. That's a huge problem for something that isn't supposed to be limited. The MM n3DS? Limited. The figure that came along with the game? Limited. While they should have made more, these are limited. Amiibos are not.

Then you have retailers. Confusion on all fronts. No one knows when preorders are going to go up. In the figure collecting field, companies will always say "you can preorder this item from 1/1/2015 12:00 JST" for almost every item. Why retailers don't know when they can open up preorders is embarrassing. Either this is on retailers, on Nintendo, or both. I lean towards both. This isn't even talking about TRU's mess ups with their preodering system, which is another issue altogether.

Next are the scalpers. They're kind of a problem. Sort of. They're just playing the market. And if retailers aren't setting hard limits that just exacerbates the problem. But scalpers wouldn't exist without...

Consumers. Consumers are paying these prices and all it takes is a little self control to say "no". But they aren't, so scalpers will inflate demand, and thus you have people upset.

You can really tell this is Nintendo's first foray into this area. It's just a huge disaster. You want these things to be desirable. You don't want them to be so difficult to come by that you have people "getting out of the game" and not bothering because it's such a pain in the arse.

I don't collect Amiibos. I don't really like Amiibos. But I do think they're fascinating and fill a niche that clearly has a strong base. This massive fustercluck just adds another level of intrigue. I don't want them to fail. Not at all. These could be gateway drugs for better quality figures, or not at all, just more acceptance for the hobby, which is always a good thing. But damn, sometimes I don't know why you guys bother! :P

No doubt. I refuse to pay those insanely inflated prices, so all I can do is hope and wait that I'll find what I want for a reasonable price. If that means I miss out - sucks, but ok. In the meantime, half the fun is the challenge of the hunt. ^_^

This is off topic but I know you folks will know. Does anyone know where I might be able to find a limited edition Majoras Mask game with the figure? Or am I way too late and going to pay a fortune? I'm getting the new handheld because it's easier for me to play in bed. Thank you for any info.

Mods I apologize if I shouldn't have posted. I just felt my amiibros/amiigals are plugged into Nintendo actions.

as far as I know, it's sold-out everywhere.
Best chance is maybe check in-store on release day if any stores got an extra, or ebay

I'll just do without before I buy from a scalper. Hell I even hate the thought of buying from TRU since they charge a dollar or two more.

Off topic: The whole mess with the N3DS in NA (probably everywhere else) is ludicrous too.

Location? If UK, Nintendo's online ship has a bundle with the game, figure and new 3DS.

Edit: sorry, didnt check profile. Any PALers, there's your solution.

Might be some in the B/S/T thread. We're all in this together!

That's my thing. I don't want to support scalpers. Sigh. Then again, some of the third party sellers on Amazon.de that have like Marth for $20...is kind of scalping. At least it's not $60-100.

I have an extra one. If you can't find one by the time it's out, I can give you it free.

Yeah, I'd never buy from a scalper if I can help it.

Like I really want that FEA soundtrack that Japan got a while back. But $300+ for one? In yo dreamssssss.

Really? Damn. I'm in the US. I would buy that in a second.

I'm pretty sure I have an extra one. I have to ask my GF, but I think she accidentally placed a second order. I don't want it, so I can actually pay off the pre-order and give it to you for free.

If you can't find one by Feb, and if I do in fact, have an extra one, I'll get it to you for free (also in the U.S).

Been absent from this thread for a long time......couldn't take the drama anymore. Here's my situation:

1. I still don't have Lucario or Rosalina pre-ordered. What's the best method to get one? Import? What places still have stock and ship to the US?

2. What days are these 2 amiibo going to be released at TRU and Target respectively?

3. I have everyone else in Wave 3 pre-ordered : )

4. Is there any place taking orders for Wave 4 and/or do we know when that will start? Don't see them on Amazon or Best Buy.

5. Anything else I should know?

1. Yes, probably import it from a Japanese site. They have plenty, and are shipping already. Your next best bet is to go in store Feb 1st (go early in the morning).

2. Feb 1st.

3. Awesome.

4. No NA retail is taking Wave 4 Pre-orders yet. Only EB Game Australia, GAMES UK, and a couple other regions (but they sold out instantly). We are all still waiting on Wave 4 pre-orders to go up. We have NO indication when they will go up (Newegg posted the pre-order pages like 4 days ago, but it just says COMING SOON).

5. Not really....

Can't think of anything. Basically, no idea when Wave 4 pre-orders are happening. Most stores in NA are going to sell Wave 3 Feb 1st. Wal Mart delayed some of their Amiibos to the 6th and 20th (so don't go through them).

I'm just going to hope that somehow there is an extra one at a store around here on release day. I also really want that MM 3DSXL, but can live with only having a black or red one.

Thanks for this, seriously. I'm an extremely casual figure collector (save for one specific vintage line) and it's good to get a take from someone who's seen releases with other lines. I wondered how common pre-ordering even was when it came to figures and it sounds like it's not uncommon at all. Interesting.

I don't really consider $20 too overpriced. I mean, if you're buying internationally you're already paying a premium for shipping anyways. As you said, my issue is when someone is selling Villager for $60+. I refuse to support that b.s.

I agreed with this.

I would like to see this happens again. I have a weird feeling that Amiibo fanfiction is going to happens as war stories.

Azula is going to be our Tactician. :lol and you are going to be woman again.
Ya want fan fiction? heres mine typed in a hurry because I'm lazy so expect many typos and no spacing:

Chapter One: Looking down upon the peasants.

WiiRevolution1 looked down upon the peasants ofAmiibo GAF. She was not a peasant, why? Because she's writing the fanfic and gives no fucks.

Queen WiiRevolution1 was most proud of the peasant ThisBeJason, who had given away seven amiibos and had given away Rosalina to Cosmic Azula before she did the unthinkable: Going sane and stop buying these stupid figures and wasting precious money. But now she and the many other peasants of Amiibo GAF have somehow lost all their money and their base belongs to us.

The Queen was happy, because the more money spent on these Amiibos, the more Club Nintendo coins she would get. She had to catch em all, before Club Nintendo expired.

However, there was someone stopping Amiibo Hunters from suckng all Amiibos available and that was the Ultimate Super Duper Evil Corporation: NOA. They should've kept stock, but all they don't care about making money and just want to watch tne world burn. Not even Sakurai Bias could save the Pit Amiibo from utter devastation.

The Queen had a plan though. NOA's secret weapon was the evil mastermind known as Paul, who had just posted his 100 Rosalina Amiibos that he scalped. Using the power of the Wii Master, a youtube live action series that she created back in 2008 and lasted nearly 100 Chapters, a power long forgotten. Now the Queen WiiRevolution1 has digivolved into the Wii Master!

Now the Wii Master must kill Paul to stop this acalper madness before its too late! Will She suceed? Or will She fall? Find out in the second exciting Chapter coming whenever I feel like writing. Hopefully before the end of 2015.

Agreed because Amazon charges sellers a ton. I almost listed my extra CF on there for $25 but then the fees brought it down to $17. More than 25% fees sheesh!

That would be awesome. I'll continue to look just in case. If it does happen please let me at least make a donation to your favorite organization if you won't let me pay you. Thanks Azula. I wish I could somehow order that UK limited edition where you get the handheld also. That would be sweet.

I've never collected before. And honeslty, I won't again after this. This has turned me off from collecting. If like I'm in Tokyo and I see a figurine that's awesome, I'll get it. But doing pre-orders, trying to specifically collect a series or line of figures. Nah. Not worth the hassle.

Yeah, I'd never buy from a scalper if I can help it.

Like I really want that FEA soundtrack that Japan got a while back. But $300+ for one? In yo dreamssssss.

Wasn't the soundtrack only $80~ on eBay when it came out? How limited was it that they've managed to jack it all the way up there?

Sure, no problem. Maybe just donate to a cancer foundation since that's what I battled. But yeah just try to find one and if by Feb you cant, I'll hook it up if I have that extra one. Wasn't going to pay it off anyways.

Stopped by a Target that was on my way to work and didn't see anything aside from the usual commons. If I had time I would have asked someone if they had any Villagers recently. Might stop by another or two on my way home after. :P

I'm a PAL gaffer, but unfortunately, while there's a bundle of Majora with a New 3DS, but that's not the Majora's New 3DS (this one is sold out). Not what he's after.

I wanted to buy one, but it was available for something like a couple hours online. Scalpers went full-force there.

Same for Amiibos. I'm still not sure I'll get a Rosalina for Wave 3-a (it's worse if shops broke the release date, as I think they did), and half of Wave 3-b (the second half of Wave 3 in Europe: Shulk, Megaman, Sonic, Dedede and Metaknight) sold out in a matter of hours on Amazon :(

Damn, I'm working... I can't keep pressing F5 all day long.

I hate what scalpers are doing, even if I reckon that's free market... Shops like Amazon should at least make their work a bit more difficult by putting limits...

Thanks for this, seriously. I'm an extremely casual figure collector (save for one specific vintage line) and it's good to get a take from someone who's seen releases with other lines. I wondered how common pre-ordering even was when it came to figures and it sounds like it's not uncommon at all. Interesting.

It's actually a great system for most figures.

Say, on December 15th, they say "On January 1st, this figure will go up for preorder. We plan to have this figure out in April." Preorders will stay open until either 1) a high ceiling is reached or 2) a period of time has passed. Sometimes they tell you. Sometimes they don't. However, what occurs is that they start producing the actual figure right before preorders open. Then, when they open, they can gauge demand. If they're coming in hot-and-heavy, they can temporarily close preorders while catching up. Usually what happens is that preorders remain open until a month or two before release.

This gives them time to make stock + make more for retail. It's a great system. Preorder, or risk losing out. Some gamble, but you always have the chance to get the figure at MSRP (or even cheaper through preorder discounts) no matter what.

One company even says "Preorders will open January 1st through January 15th, get it then if you want it, because we want this to be exclusive and rare." If you preorder in that window you are guaranteed the figure.

It's a little different for Amiibos, sure. They have actual retail stock which probably takes up a good chunk of their actual stock. But why they don't follow their countrymen and women with their methodology that has proven to have worked for years and years is confusing.

That's usually how I am (again, aside from the one vintage line because I have a connection to it and that's a very different animal anyway), just something about amiibos sucked me in. I just don't have the space for any other lines. Still, always interesting to learn about this stuff.
