The thing about "playing" as the Amiibo wouldn't work in Smash I think. Not that it's a bad idea as it obviously works with things like Skylanders but I mean with Smash you can play as the characters without Amiibos so it's not like Skylanders where if you want to play as Drobot you but a Drobot and you can also customise characters (moves, stats and special abilities) in the base game of Smash anyway without a purchase so you get the customisation and stuff built in. You should be able to save a custom character to an Amiibo (or maybe even the Wii motes as you could save Mii data to them IIRC) to take to a friends house and all that, that is a bit of missing functionality.
I do like the training stuff though. I thought when it was announced that it'd be bad but then seeing the Fox Amiibo and how good it looked (sculpt and paint) made me get one and using it has been fun. It went from doing pretty much nothing in the first match to slowly getting better and better, learning to shoot when I'm far away and reflect shots back after I was mirror matching it a bit and now I can't beat it. It's not even max level and I've tried to undo what little "food" I've given it because it's too good. Makes for a good partner going against 2 lvl 9s.
