Amiibo Discussion Thread

The thing about "playing" as the Amiibo wouldn't work in Smash I think. Not that it's a bad idea as it obviously works with things like Skylanders but I mean with Smash you can play as the characters without Amiibos so it's not like Skylanders where if you want to play as Drobot you but a Drobot and you can also customise characters (moves, stats and special abilities) in the base game of Smash anyway without a purchase so you get the customisation and stuff built in. You should be able to save a custom character to an Amiibo (or maybe even the Wii motes as you could save Mii data to them IIRC) to take to a friends house and all that, that is a bit of missing functionality.

I do like the training stuff though. I thought when it was announced that it'd be bad but then seeing the Fox Amiibo and how good it looked (sculpt and paint) made me get one and using it has been fun. It went from doing pretty much nothing in the first match to slowly getting better and better, learning to shoot when I'm far away and reflect shots back after I was mirror matching it a bit and now I can't beat it. It's not even max level and I've tried to undo what little "food" I've given it because it's too good. Makes for a good partner going against 2 lvl 9s.

MouldyK:
Secret Choice 5) Get a Villager with oddly placed eyes that somehow add to the menace factor.

Despite being told, by Amazon UK, that my Villager amiibo won't dispatch until the 19th, I received notification today that it is on its way. Yay!

I've been too a number of stores looking for Amiibos and I have been continually shocked at how much shelf space Skylanders get. It's unbelievable. I can't think of any toy line from my childhood that was given that much space.

I've played a lot of Skylanders with my kids, it is a really good and well made game. The figures are decent quality too.

It feels like Acti do everything they can to make it appeal to parents, the complete backwards compatibility, the co-op play, the nice quality of all the figures and the portal and stuff.

Villager being £25 on amazon, what a joke,

I am only missing from wave one:

Zelda
Mario
DK
Yoshi
Fox
Samus

I saw that there is a lot of them and went for the ones I liked in the set.

wave 2&3 are going to destroy my bank account.

Right now there's definitely a usefulness deficit with these things. Link would unlock the Spinner weapon for me in Hyrule Warriors but that makes him a 15 euro piece of DLC, which isn't acceptable to me.

The alternative is having (significant) parts of the game locked away behind an amiibo paywall. I don't get what about that would be preferable. Some people even tried to argue that's already the case with amiibo, since AI players have max level 9.

Went back to my local GAME today mostly to ask when they thought they would get more amiibo since they got so few of them last week. Got really lucky since a bunch wasn't picked up by people who had pre-ordered and they hadn't put them out in the store yet! Still no Kirby but I managed to get all the others I wanted. So now I have Fox, Yoshi, Pikachu and Samus. They only had one of each and some paint on Samus isn't great but I'm satisfied anyway. Nearly went back for the Marth they had because he was probably the most good looking one I've seen, but I decided to leave him for someone who actually wants him.

Really tempted to order Kirby online now but I bet I'll get a derpy one since all the others are so good :D

My ShopTo amiibo finally came and.. I'm tempted to send it back. Do they even accept returns on this? She's so damn drunk. Now convinced they are definitely the sort of thing you only buy in person.

I'm a casual amiibo guy, barely knew anything about them. My 6 year old nephew wanted them and I picked up two of them for his use on my Wii U. Was shocked they were NPCs, actually pretty pissed about it, I thought you could actually play the characters. He was also extremely disappointed in that. He doesn't want a pet in a game, he wanted to play as the character.

So, speaking as a casual fan, you are 100% right, I was mis-led and I think a lot of people will be too, especially when they learn they are fairly useless.

Nintendo failed to point it out in their commercial. They even had the girl liking the boy more as it seemed he was doing better in the game.

Many people were fooled by this commercial and are now disappointed. It is simple for all these members to try and say it is not misleading by pointing out certain aspects of the commercial. Simple to do when you know what you are looking for. But for those that have no idea how Amiibo's work, it is not that obvious what so ever.

I still say the blame is on you, not this commercial. If you read the back of the package the amiibo comes in it makes it clear that you don't store your information or play as that character. It tells you that you can bring the amiibo into the fight as a partner or a foe, and that you can level it up to make it stronger.

I had no idea what the amiibo did before I saw that commercial and the other material Nintendo put online, and I understood it perfectly after watching it.

Going into this weekend I had Marth, Link, and Wii Fit Trainer. Yesterday I added Mario and Fox.

I'm being super deliberate with which ones I buy as it relates to paint jobs. I also kind of think it is more fun to buy carefully examine each one that I buy instead of simply ordering the whole lot on Amazon up front.

You can play as any character in the game with or without amiibos =/

I grabbed a Donkey Kong at Target over the weekend. I have half of the first wave so far. Looking for Marth still (kicking myself for passing on him the first time).

So far my collection has Mario, Fox, Wii Fit Trainer, and Villager.

I bought my daughter Peach and my son Yoshi.

I'll probably be grabbing Pikachu, Samus, and DK this week.

This is going to be an expensive collection. :(

I am clearly not the only one who was fooled by the commercial.

Anyone with common sense can see what Nintendo tried to do with the commercial. I also do not care who you think is to blame. I am not a kid, the commercial was deceiving, and I was fooled by it. Knowing how Skylanders and Infinity characters work, I and many others thought these worked the same way. Nintendo will not fool me again.

Just a sidebar to this: my local grocery store has a Skylanders stand as one of the first things you see when you walk in.

To be fair, there's a TOOONNNN more Skylanders toys due to how many games & figures there are, considering the series is a few years old. I'm sure once Nintendo releases more games that support them and more waves of them, we'll see them get more shelf space.

It's funny you mention that as the one thing the commercial makes crystal-clear is that the older girl did not like the younger boy more because of playing with amiibos. The entire setup of the spot was him being soundly and brutally rejected for misinterpreting that and going in to seal the deal with a victory kiss. No way kid, you ain't on my level.

Have you actually tried this? Taking your profile mobile with a Wiimote was a thing in Brawl; just because it's not called out in the instruction booklet doesn't mean it's gone...

I don't mean to denigrate their exposure, it's more that I'm just pointing out that I had no idea how popular they are.

TBH, from my experiences shopping for Amiibos it seems like Nintendo is fighting for any shelf space period. The Wii U racks are just sad. And the 3DS racks aren't much better.

I really hope this helps turn things in a more positive direction for them.

Okay, Gaf, all of your Bioware Choices have come to this moment.

While on my way to the cinema to watch Horrible Bosses 2, I walked into my Smyths store and they have Amiibos behind the counter, including a Marth. Actually, they have them all.

Here are your options:

1) I'm feeling lucky! (Ask for the first Marth they have and accept it.)

2) Show me your wares! (Ask to see all of their Marth Amiibos to compare.)

3) On second thought, what else ya got? (Get a Pikachu one as there is a lower chance of it being bad.)

4) Not today, thanks. (Go home after cinema and never look back.)

You have 2.5 hours.
My advice is to go to a store where they aren't behind the counter.

1. The kid explicitly says "they fight with you" rather than "you fight as them"

2. The game clearly shows 8 fighters when there are only 4 people present, and even has the kids play as their Miis to prevent confusion as to who's who

3. The minute-long training montage always shows the Amiibo fighting against/with the kid's Mii

4. The game already lets you fully customize and play as any character you want

If you managed to miss all of these clear signs that you don't play as the Amiibo, then I think it's safe to say the problem lies with your own comprehension skills.

So very tempted to return the Samus that arrived today. She's so wonky (also leaning forward, which the pic doesn't show). I tried to keep the box straight against the frame, so that lean is really how much she's leaning.

I cant believe we have people trying to defend amiibos as not being confusing when clearly people in this thread are confused lol

My best buy still doesn't have any Villager Amiibo. I only seen 1 Marth Amiibo at 2 different BB. Fox Amiibo low in stock too. Villager and WiiFit trainer are rare.

No Best Buy has him yet for some reason, including the website.

People are still confused about the difference between 720p and 1080p. People still defend it.

I would have understood a few months ago when Nintendo was still being stingy with details on amiibo implementation, but the info is out there now, and none of it is misleading. No, it's not like Skylanders or Disney Infinity, but they never promised it would be. It's up to the consumer to educate themselves on the products they buy. It's like buying the new Digimon game and then complaining because you thought it would be like Pokemon since they sound similar.

Anyone in Canada able to preorder wave 2 of the Amiibos at EB Games yet?

Neither of the stores here in town have allowed preorders yet and the website shows all 6 as sold out now.

What the shit?

I think, from the first wave I'll stop when I get Kirby, Villager and Marth. Maaaybe pick up Link for the Spinner in Hyrule Warriors and Samus because it's Samus and she looks amazing.

Next Wave I need Captain Falcon though. And maybe Mac. Wave 3 though (or 3 and 4 depending on where you are) I need Shulk, Mega Man, Dedede, Meta Knight and Maybe Shiek, Ike and Sonic. After that though I think I just need Pac Man.

I'm not the only one breaking down the information and how readily available it is to you. The only way you could misinterpret this commercial, or any of the other amiibo information that is easily available, is if you went in with your own preconceived notions of how they would function, as you clearly did based on your assumption they would be like Skylanders and Infinity.

You did not research correctly, and you misinterpreted the information. You weren't fooled or duped by anything, you just didn't get it. As someone else said, you even failed to correctly interpret the concept of the girl liking the boy more as he trained his amiibo.

All that aside, as I've said twice now, the box itself tells you what they do. Ignoring the specific word choice of the people in the commercial. It's ridiculous that you won't admit that your lack of proper research and your personal misinterpretation led you to believe they would do something, and you'll take the extra step to imply that anyone who was able to understand the ads about the figurines somehow lacks common sense despite the fact that they knew what the information meant and you did not.

That's ignoring the fact that anyone with "common sense" or knowledge of what Smash Bros is would have been able to determine that these figurines don't unlock characters or allow you to play as them because that's not how the game works. Let alone where you got the idea that you store "level data", being that Smash isn't a game where you level up. Anyway, if you still don't get it, then you don't get it and no amount of giving you instances where the functionality was accurately depicted (including the first time they were demoed in Smash) will change your mind.

Just came back from Toys R Us and picked up a Donkey Kong. Surprisingly they had a good stock of most of the mailbox, including 4 Marths and 4 Wii Fit Trainers. No Villagers though.

You could try selling it as "Factory Defect Drunken Samus" on some auction site ... just sayin'.

I luckily managed to get Villager at a Game store, and it was the last one left. They still had a couple of Mario, Peach and DK amiibos on the shelf. That will be it for me until Wave 2 arrives with Toon Link and Megaman.
