Amnesty International has accused the Israeli military of war crimes in Gaza during a war earlier this year against Hamas.

In a new report, Amnesty described eight cases in which residential Palestinian homes were attacked without warning, which resulted in the deaths of 104 people including 62 children.

“Israeli forces have brazenly flouted the laws of war by carrying out a series of attacks on civilian homes, displaying callous indifference to the carnage caused,” said Philip Luther, Director of the Middle East and North Africa Programme at Amnesty International. “Even if a fighter had been present in one of these residential homes, it would not absolve Israel of its obligation to take every feasible precaution to protect the lives of civilians caught up in the fighting.”

Israeli officials said during and since the bloody battle that Hamas endangered civilians and committed the war crime of human shielding by conducting military operations from homes as well as hospitals, mosques and schools, including several run by the United Nations where weapons were found.

“The report does not mention the word terror in relation to Hamas or other armed Palestinian groups, nor mention tunnels built by Hamas to infiltrate Israel and perpetrate terror attacks,” read the statement from Israel’s embassy in London, where the Amnesty report was released. “By ignoring the nature of the enemy Israel faced in Gaza — a terror group recognized as such by the European Union, the United States and others — Amnesty’s report fails to contribute to the important discussion needed to solve the conflict.

“Instead,” the statement adds, “Amnesty serves as a propaganda tool for Hamas and other terror groups.”

During the 50-day war, six civilians, including a 4-year-old boy, were killed on the Israeli side, along with 67 soldiers. Nearly 2,200 Palestinians, including more than 500 children, were killed in Gaza, according to the United Nations; some 100,000 buildings were damaged or destroyed.

It's also worth noting that according to the UN OCHA, of the 2,189 killed, 1,486 are believed to be civilians, including 513 children.

Have Israel ever shown any proof of the human shields claim? I know there's plenty of video evidence of IDF soldiers using Palestinians as human shields.

Does Amnesty International hold any weight regarding enacting sentences upon Israel? Couple of months ago some other international court, whose name escapes me currently, did the same charge and nothing came out of it.

I assume they mean Hamas fire rockets from densely populated areas and then hide in civilian buildings. Surely they don't mean they're tying civilians to tanks or something.

The response is fucking stupid. Sure, Hamas, or part of it at least, is a terrorist organization. But you can't fight terrorists by bombing buildings. That never, ever worked. Because it causes collateral damage which in turn only creates more terrorists. You need police methods to fight them, not military methods. Want to stop Hamas? Give the Palestinians the autonomy, means and motivation to do so.
