Data firm Ampere estimates that Death Standing 2: On The Beach sold 1.4 million copies by the end of June. The game has had a slower start than the original in terms of physical sales across Europe, but digital sales have been stronger.

Not surprised. People knew what to expect after 1 and not all liked it. Also i haven't seen much marketing except huge banners on Metacritic.

Whatever, wake me up when the Alinea Analytics numbers come in.

jk jk.

This is interesting because 6 years ago, people had no idea wtf Death Stranding was, so there was a bit of curiosity in the purchase. Especially after how Kojima escaped Konami. Now people have lived through the 2 hour wtf ending cutscene of the first game, so I'm sure that is playing a big role here.

Also, Death Stranding is an almost unmarketable game, so how do you even bring in new players?

Was this game advertised much? I don't think I've seen one ad for it.
There's been a bunch but nothing is going to grip people like this did back in the day

Nice should go on to what, maybe >3m or so on just Playstation? Then it will sell more on PC. I'm not upset at these numbers. I'm sure Kojima is not upset with this. This has to be along expectations.

Part 2 is a better game I assume but it doesn't seem to have fundamentally changed the gameplay loop so I'm not surprised this wasn't a breakout hit.

Is that all? I fully expected it to sell at least 3-4 million given the backing that Sony gave it and with Hideo Kojima attached to it as well. Hopefully this means that the PC/Xbox/NW2 versions of the game won't that far away.

i know the game is not for everyone, but i bought it day 1 and enjoy it.
CUrrently this is the only game i play

The best PS5 exclusive this gen, by far.

I guess sales are pretty good, this was never going to be a multi million seller right of the bat.

Will probably follow the same trajectory as the first, with strong legs thanks to word of mouth and a second wind once it releases on PC

First one sold 4,1m copies as of Feb 2022(more than 2 years after launch), why would you expect a sequel to sell that much? 😅

Stupid question- but are these estimates for worldwide sales of physical and digital?

Google says this about Death Stranding . But of course that was a full week, while this would be 4-5 days after release of standard version.

Sorry I forgot the data:
In its first week of release in Japan, Death Stranding sold over 260,000 copies. Specifically, the game sold 185,909 physical copies in Japan, according to Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu. Additionally, the game sold over 1.5 million copies in North America and over 1.2 million copies in Europe during that time, according to AceNet Hub

You mean physical sales compared to 6 years ago? That's absolutely expected.
When digital sales are added and the drop is the same you'd be right.
That was the same arguments for FF Rebirth and higher digital sales didn't compensate the drop of physical sales… Is the same situation all over again. But the US market has the last word…

As interesting as this is, we won't get a good read on how this launch went until - I'd say - end of August.

It's also worth pointing out that the first game came out in November while this one is out here in July.

PC release will bump up these numbers by a lot imo especially overtime

I'm guessing this will have a longer sales tail. It's a sequel with no FOMO/incentive to pay top dollar for Day 1 unless you really loved the first game.

It's also been an incredible year so far, tons of great stuff to play. So I imagine there's a lot waiting to pick this up when they have time / it's on sale

There's a middle ground between fully compensating or exceeding and doing nothing to cover a 50% drop in physical sales that is normal for a dying media after 6 years.
The game is also clearly not mainstream material, this is no COD or FIFA, people who didn't like the original have zero reasons to consider the sequel which is essentially a much better version of the same game.

It's been in the top 3 on PSN US since 1 day before release. And seems to be in top 3 in many others. They also underestimated how many physical copies it would sell on Amazon US. Even people who pre ordered it were on backorder. But of course if people didn't like the gameplay of the first game theu won't care for the sequel.

1.4 million is still an excellent number and profitable. I dont get it why everyone is expecting all great games to be 3 to 5 million at launch.
Thats the norm.

Go check out Doom TDA is flop multiple threads. Despite selling over a million + gamepass. Likely had lower budget than this.

The novelty of the new game by Kojima worn off and people who bought the first one, knows what it's about, that leaves only people who care to keep playing this franchise, while the rest moves on

At least in Japan, DS2 needs to sell way above 113,000 digital to compensate the physical drop + Whatever DS1 sold digitally… And i doubt that happened.

That's pretty good, considering that Death Stranding 1 reached 5 million copies after almost 2 years, and was deemed a success to warrant a sequel.
And that game had to pay for the beginning of an entire studio, let's not forget that. This one is a sequel that was built from the foudations of the first game. Plus the fact that it's made in Japan. Salaries are much lower.

DS isn't your standard game with mass market appeal, so I wouldn't expect extraordinary sales.
The first game had the advantage of being something new and different from Kojima, I imagine a lot of people bought it out of curiosity. The second game is only going to sell to people who actually enjoyed the delivery gameplay in the original.
